Manuscript Collection A functioning manuscript collection with proper donation procedures began recently. Now, items are given a collection name, accessioned, cataloged with subject tracing and added to the collection. In the past, no registry was maintained. At times, loose notes that were received were bound together and added as a volume Items in the Manuscript Collection Lyman Chalkley s original annotated typescript for his 3-volume publication Chronicles of the Scot-Irish Settlement in Virginia, published by the DAR in 1912 Anne Waller Reddy Collection of Virginia family research. DAR Library File Collection 10,000 folders Material submitted with applications or was subsequent donated by members. Items include wills, deeds, bible records, family studies, pamphlets and research notes. Digitization currently underway and files may not be available. Materials are being attached to the application for which they were originally submitted. United States Ephemera Collection Since the beginning of the Society, members have sent pamphlets, booklets, newspaper clippings, transcripts and manuscripts to the Society. Beginning in June 2000, the DAR Library Staff began cataloging them into the on-line catalog and arranging the material to be available to the public. 4

It is searchable from home computers. GRS TUTORIAL GRS SEARCHES Searches may be by Ancestor (Revolutionary War soldier), descendants, or DAR Member #. The analysis required will use a fill in the blank form found at the DAR website 37 marker Y-DNA The accuracy of the 37 marker Y-DNA does not allow for positively identifying descent from a particular ancestor. 95% degree of certainty that two living men share a common ancestor at more than 150 but less than 200 years when they match all 37 marker locations. 12

13 DNA use for DAR Application Submit application with only one unproven father-son link. Test a male with a proven link to the same father who was born more than 150 and less that 200 years earlier Not useable for new ancestor applications DNA test is part of analysis which includes exhaustive search to find direct evidence Surnames of the males tested and maiden name of applicant or her mother must be the same. DNA use for DAR Application (continued) One of the two makes must be a close male relative of applicant (father, brother, grandfather, uncle, great uncle). Second male will have a direct lineage to the patriot WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY PROVEN TO THE DAR. The submitted 37 marker Y-DNA test will have to be IDENTICAL. 13
