1 5.7: Formation of Fossil Fuels n Engineer s Work Lexile 860L Hi! My name is nnie, and I am an engineer. I love my job. You might wonder what an engineer does. I am here to tell you all about it. n engineer is someone who figures out how to make things, like machines and equipment, work better. I had to study math and science in school to prepare for this job. Now, companies hire me to check their equipment and make improvements. This helps increase their profits, or the money they bring in. ll companies would like to make more money that is why I am always busy! I work with companies that do many different things, but all of them produce products that are important to us. Some of the companies I work for are giant oil refineries or recycling plants. Others produce energy In order to help these companies increase their profits, I must work very closely with the employees who work there. That is one of the best parts of my job the people. I enjoy the huge machinery and newly-developed electronics, but even if I did not get to work with those things, I would still enjoy all the new friends I meet when I travel out into the field and visit the companies I work for. When I go out into the field, it is usually to help companies that deal with oil, coal, and natural gas. I help them figure out how to produce these fuels more efficiently and how to improve conservation. Together, the employees and I analyze the way they are doing things now. Then, we create a good plan to change the way work is done for the better. When I make a plan, I am looking for ways to get more fuel while reducing the costs of collecting that fuel. It is a tough goal to reach, but that is what keeps my job so interesting. If I were not challenged at work, I would get bored pretty quickly. New challenges are another great part of my job. It is like being faced with a new puzzle every day! 1

I studied, worked hard, and trained so that I could get my dream job, and so can you. Find something you enjoy that keeps you challenged.
