4 Current Student Spotlight: Melissa Paolangeli ( 09) Melissa Paolangeli is a senior from Centreville, Virginia who has a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Theatre. With graduation only a few months away, Melissa is thinking towards the future. She plans to move back to the Washington D.C. area and to look for a job in public relations or marketing. Melissa also really enjoys writing, so she will look in that field as well. Just like any student, she has a dream job, working for the Food Network. Melissa would love to take her passion for writing and make a career of it, working in the editorial department at a food or lifestyle magazine. As a member of Lambda Pi Eta (the National Communications Honor Society), Melissa has excelled academically in her college career. Beyond academics though, she has been involved in five Messiah College Theatre productions and works as a student writer in the Messiah Office of Marketing and Public Relations. In that role, she serves as a proofreader for the publications office and a writer for The Bridge magazine. In addition to all of that, just this past J-Term Melissa had the unique experience of embarking on a three week crosscultural study in Ghana, which she recollected as being the most challenging, yet enriching experience of her life. Apart from all of her experiences at Messiah, Melissa has completed two prestigious internships. Her first was at the Washington National Opera in Washington D.C. and her second was for Time Warner Cable as a corporate marketing intern. What is Melissa s favorite thing about being a Communication major? I love the broad range of career options that are open to Communication majors, Melissa said. I also love how the faculty really cares about their students and are always willing to help! Her advice to her fellow Communication students is to find an internship. Our communication classes are great, but getting into the business world is the best way to apply what you have learned in the classroom in a real world setting. Melissa also loved the semester she spent at Temple. She suggests that all students spend some time at another campus, be it in Philly or abroad. It allowed her to experience a diverse learning environment and to take classes that Messiah does not offer. Her biggest piece of advice as a graduating senior is to make sure you enjoy every moment of college, because it goes by too quickly!

5 News and Updates NEWS: Will you be a senior next fall? Are you looking for a great opportunity to put your public relations skills into use? Then you might be interested in COMM 426-Senior PR Campaign. The class will work for a non-profit company in the greater Harrisburg area to develop a campaign from research to implementation and evaluation. Messiah College chapter of the PRSSA has started its spring semester meetings and will be meeting weekly throughout the semester alternating Mondays and Tuesdays. The meetings will feature several guest professionals and panels regarding PR and internship topics. The PRSSA is also taking the project of creating an awareness/fundraising campaign event to be held next fall for CURE International. For more information contact: Liza Tompkins or visit UPDATE: Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is back in action for the spring semester. Several exciting speakers have been lined up, including Deborah Saline, APR. Deborah Saline is a founding member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Public Relations Society of America, and one of only 400 Fellows in PRSA s College of Fellows. She will be sharing her exciting career and wealth of knowledge with our organization on April 7 th. PRSSA is also working on a public relations project for CURE International. This project will give PRSSA members the chance to be involved in research, media relations, event planning, and public relations writing. It is an opportunity to gain practical experience and help a worthy cause. PRSSA will also help the American Cancer Society this semester by participating in Relay for Life on April 17 th. 6 Graduate School Have you ever thought about going to Graduate School? Do not stop reading just because you are a freshman or sophomore and think, I have plenty of time until I need to bother with this! Trust me, the more time you put into thinking about your future plans now, the less stressed you will be as a senior. So where do you start? Follow this list of suggestions to get on the right track! 1. Talk with advisors, professors, and other mentors who have a background in a field that interests you. Ask them about their educational experiences what they did right/ wrong/ what they would change Build a relationship with them! It will be a lot easier for them to write you a recommendation letter if they actually know something more than you got an A in their class three years ago. 2. Go to the Internet. The Internet has a wealth of information, from scholarship opportunities to students perspectives on their school. 3. Contact graduate programs that interest you. Keep a list of the ones that stand out. Read reviews about programs and talk to alumni for advice. 4. Keep your resume updated! I know we have heard this a thousand times, but when it comes time to apply to schools or get a job, you will be glad you do not have to try to remember what you did when you were a freshman /sophomore etc. You get the picture. Go to the Career Center and have them edit it. They have seen many resumes and it helps to have someone else s opinion and have another set of eyes scan your resume for mistakes. 5. Go to any career/graduate school fairs that you can. Often graduate schools will waive your admission s fee if you speak with them at a fair. 6. You must take the GREs for most graduate programs. Prepare for this early. I did not know that if I wanted to go to graduate school, a test was required. I ended up taking them just a few weeks before my applications were due. Do not make this mistake! It will give you a lot of unnecessary stress and you will not do as well. The GREs are expensive so start saving now! 7. Be aware of deadlines. Although this may seem like common sense, college students are busy. Applications are just one more thing to put off. Many schools have rolling admission, but if you want to be considered for assistantships and scholarships you must apply early (check the schools website for details). 8. You may be able to graduate from college with average grades but that will not cut it when it comes to getting into grad school. Graduate programs are competitive, so keep your GPA up and work hard to make it evident to your program of interest that you are a dedicated, hard working student. 9. Start the dreaded purpose statement early! What sets you apart? You can get excellent grades, have stellar recommendation letters, and ace your GRE s but you will not stand out amongst the hundreds of applications if you do not have a good purpose statement. Answer the following in your statement Why do you want to be a part of their program/attend their school? What do you want to research? What professors at their institution draw you to their school and why? Why is this a good time for you to study at the graduate level? Be sure to tailor you statement to your specific institutions criteria. If you do not plan to apply to graduate school for a while, just write down random thoughts about what you enjoy about your major, questions you may have that you would like to answer through research, positive things you have heard about certain graduate programs. Nothing is irrelevant. You will thank yourself when you sit down senior year and have a place to start rather than staring at a black computer screen for hours on end. At worst, your comments will be good comic relief when you just need a break from thinking about graduate school applications. 10. Request transcripts and recommendation letters as soon as you know you want to apply to a certain school. When you are a senior, many people will be doing this, so your professors and the registrar will be inundated with requests. You do not have control over these parts of the application so be sure to keep track of these materials so that your application gets in on time. Write a thank you letter to your professors for taking the time to help you. If you follow these suggestions, your application process will go a lot more smoothly and you will be much more confident that you did all you could to get into your program of choice.
