1 QETI/034 Understanding Computer aided drawing (CAD) Credit Value 7 QCF Level 2 GLH 50 Unit purpose/aims Learner pack This unit will enable you to acquire the knowledge and practical skills required to produce basic 2D engineering drawings to industry, national and international standards using a CAD system. This unit involves the use of tools, equipment or machinery and as such must be delivered in a secure and safe environment; learners must be supervised at all times by competent and qualified staff to ensure their safety. All tools, equipment or machinery must be maintained and presented in a safe and fit state for use. The higher risk activities within this unit require safeguarding at all times. Summary of learning outcomes You will: 34.1 Understand the risks to health and safety resulting from the use of computer equipment 34.2 Understand how to configure the CAD system to suit drawing requirements 34.3 Understand the requirement to comply with national and international drawing standards 34.4 Understand how to use CAD software for the production of 2D industry standard engineering drawings 34.5 Understand how to use layers, copy, modify and manipulate drawn entities to maintain drawing efficiency Assessment requirements An internally assessed written assignment that assess the knowledge requirements of learning outcome An internally assessed drawing task that will cover the practical requirements of learning outcomes 34.1 to Page 1 of 5

2 Unit 34 Short answer question paper Internal assessment 34.1 Learner name: Date: 1. State: Learner no: Attempt no: a) THREE examples of possible operator ill-health resulting from the regular use of computer equipment b) for EACH of the examples given, ONE method of avoiding or controlling the risk c) FOUR aspects of the user s working environment that would be included in a Display Screen Equipment assessment checklist Learners and/or assessors comments Assessor signature Pass mark 70% Date of re-assessment (if applicable) Learner mark: Page 2 of 5

3 Unit 35 Learner instructions Internal assessment 34.2, 34.3, 34.4 and 35.5 WHY are we doing this? To demonstrate the practical ability to intialise and configure a CAD sytem appropriate to the drawing task To demonstrate understanding and knowledge of national and international drawing standards in current use To demonstrate the practical ability to operate a CAD system effectively and efficiently To demonstrate the practical ability to output CAD data to suitably configured peripheral devices WHAT do we need? Computer workstation CAD software Data storage medium/disk space Task sheet indicating outcomes to be assessed HOW do we make a start? Observe health and safety procedures at all times. ISO BS EN information sheets Sketching/rough working paper Calculator On-line plotter/printer 1. Loading and configuring log into the computer system locate and load the CAD software application to be used Open a new or existing drawing, name and save in accordance with instructions on task sheet set drawing parameters to be appropriate for the task set drawing aids to be appropriate for the task 2. Producing CAD drawing Complete all of the requirements given within the Task Sheets provided. The tasks should be of sufficient depth to enable the assessor to address all of the outcomes to be assessed and should cover the use of: Settings: o drawing limits o datums/origins o standard sheet sizes o standard sheet layouts o drawing aids o user-defined layers o standard line types Dimensions: o linear o radial o angular o aligned o leaders o ordinates Geometry: o lines o circles o arcs o splines/ellipses o hatching o hole patterns o standard symbols o 1 st. & 3 rd. angle projection Text: o styles o orientation o position The task may be the production a single CAD drawing or a series of CAD drawings that ensure that all of the outcomes are adequately assessed as listed above. Continued on next page Page 3 of 5

4 Unit 35 Learner instructions (cont) Internal assessment 34.2, 34.3, 34.4 and Outputting to peripheral devices use appropriate commands or dialog boxes to select and set the peripheral device parameters required to meet the requirements of CAD data to be output and the peripheral device used use appropriate commands or dialog boxes to output the CAD data for the purpose given 4. Closing-down the system save the CAD data in accordance with recognised procedures close-down the CAD system in accordance with recognised procedures Page 4 of 5
