1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design COMD 1103 Foundation Drawing : Course Description This drawing course introduces basic concepts, tools, techniques and the role of drawing in design, illustration, animation and games. The course will also cover projection systems, plans, elevations, sections, oblique, isometric, one point perspective and two point perspective views. 1cl hr, 3 lab hrs, 2 cr Prerequisites : CUNY proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics or Corequisites. ENG 092R (ESOL 032R) and/or ENG 092W (ESOL 031W) as required. Course Objectives : INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: For the successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Describe the basic projection systems for two and three-dimensional objects in written essays and drawing applications. Use drawing tools to creating projection systems with points, lines and planes. Create projection systems using measurements provided by points, lines and planes for plan, elevation and section projection views. ASSESSMENT : Evaluation methods and criteria: through practical drawing applications and in written essays. Students will demonstrate proficiency with the drawing tools through applications and discussions. with measurements applying points, lines and planes to all projection systems. 1

2 Create an oblique projection system drawing using measurements from plan, elevation and section views Create an isometric projection system drawing using measurements from the plan, section and elevation views of a simple object with shadows. Explain in both verbally and in writing vocabulary and concepts related to drawing projection systems. Create a one-point perspective drawing including a simple object. Create a complex one- point perspective drawing of a room and furniture. Create a two-point perspective drawing with simple objects. Create a complex two-point perspective drawing of a room and furniture. Attendance (College) and Lateness (Department) Policies: A class roster roll will be taken at the beginning of each class. Only two absences may be allowed. After two absences, a student may be withdrawn because of unsatisfactory attendance (code WU). Students arriving after the roll is taken will be marked late. Students may be notified at the earliest opportunity in class after they have been absent or late. After being absent two times or equivalent (2 lateness = 1 absence), a student may be asked to withdraw from the class (code W before the College drop deadline, 4/9/08) or may be withdrawn from the class (code WU). Academic Integrity Standards : You are responsible for reading, understanding and abiding by the NYC College of Technology Student Handbook, Student Rights & Responsibilities, section Academic Integrity Standards. Academic dishonesty of any type, including cheating and plagiarism 3
