13 ART of the PALEOLITHIC Cave Crisis For 10 s of thousands of years the caves remain protected by the constant temperature and humidity brought by the natural closing of the caves Once discovered, the climate within the caves has changed drastically

14 The most caves received 10 s of thousands of visitors per month Air conditioning, lighting, water vapor from respiration, CO2 and possible spoors brought in by visitors have changed the environment. Organic materials used to create the paintings add to the degrading conditions. Most of the cave sites have been declared a UNESCO world heritage site because of it s special cultural significance and closed to the public

15 Cave Painting Crisis Mold, bacteria and fungus have developed on the walls of the caves. Fungicides and antibiotics have been applied using compresses soaked in the liquid. Solving one problem leads to others- Antibiotic resistance Killing organisms that help control other organisms.

Art work depicting your animal describe, what colors were generally used, what caves were they located, realistic? Accurate? Take notes on each Meet in groups today

20 Animals of Paleolithic Art project part 2 : cave drawing panel Review the power point images of your animal, familiarize yourself with the animal and how it was depicted in the cave art and choose an image to draw. Each group will create a panel of drawings of your animal in the style of the Paleolithic artists. We will present both the research information and the art panel to the class on Weds. Oct. 11 th. This project is part of your participation grade and counts as your first art assignment.

25 Brake-It-Down Sketch The most important step in the whole process!! Draw lightly!!! Corrections- eraser is your friend! Drawing the shapes that make up the subject ie ovals, cones, circles etc.

26 Paleolithic hunters had expert observation skills knowing the animals they shared their world with on an intimate basis. The cave paintings were always drawn from memory, exemplifying their complete understanding of the animals.

27 Direct observation and memory sketch exercise Take your art materials out and turn to the first blank page. We will view six images of the common animals depicted in the cave art. We will view each for a limited amount of time Then you will attempt to draw them from memory any characteristic that you can remember.
