0-0 High School Design Competition 0-0 HS Design Competition: Program The Challenge: Fremont East Photo Courtesy of Project Description: Develop a recently vacated site in the up and coming Fremont East district of Downtown Las Vegas that will facilitate and encourage the continued growth of the downtown area. For the 0- year, students will propose and design a mixed-use development on the former site of the Motel at 0 Fremont Street, to be inhabited and used primarily by people working in nearby downtown businesses. The structures on the. acre site were recently razed; providing a prime location for development within the Fremont East district. Students will accommodate for a mixture of commercial / entertainment, residential and office spaces that respond accurately and intelligently to the contextual surroundings. Perhaps most importantly, this year s competition will focus on the idea of walkable cities and New Pedestrianism, and will remove the notion of a personal automobile from the equation. With the recent relocation of Zappos and the reopening of the Downtown Grand (the former Lady Luck), the surge of growth downtown (and thus the need for commercial and residential development) is inevitable. Students are encouraged to research architects/architectural projects to serve as inspiration and apply any design theories/concepts into their own design in a way that is appropriate to this challenge. Students are encouraged to borrow their selected architect or design firm s aesthetic style, drawing techniques, floor and spatial arrangements and interpret them into their own designs.

0-0 High School Design Competition Design Guidelines: Conduct a cohesive analysis of the surrounding area to determine the context within which you will be designing. Create commercial street front developments along Fremont that will appropriately help extend the individuality of the Fremont East businesses to its eastern border of S. th Street. Create a sense of community for the residents that encourages daily interactions amongst the neighbors. Create safe and accessible pedestrian paths for the inhabitants and user groups. Design public, semi-private, and/or private areas that provide opportunities for people to gather and interact. Abide by the notion of a walkable city and New Pedestrianism, which for this competition means NO ADDITIONAL PARKING LOTS, SPACES OR GARAGES will be accepted or appropriate for either personal or guest use. Judges have been asked not to consider any new parking that has been included, while reviewing the site plan submissions. A small car or bike-share station (with a small amount of compact parking stalls) may be incorporated into the site design. The existing site entry along Fremont shall be deleted. The existing site entry along South th Street may be relocated or deleted, if deemed appropriate by the class. Immediately adjacent to the east property line of the site is a narrow access drive. While no buildings or development currently exist on the opposite side of this drive, it is recommended that students consider what might be built on this site in the future (i.e. it may be a solid block wall). Refer to the Downtown Centennial Plan to generate ideas (not restrictions) for the overall site development. Site: 0 Fremont Street Las Vegas, Nevada. Acres Master Plan Requirements: As a part of one building, or a small number of contiguous buildings for the separate building types, provide the following: A commercial or entertainment component which utilizes the valuable Fremont street frontage. Students should gain inspiration from nearby businesses, but some suggestions to help get started: A Restaurant / Café; Gallery; Shop or Store; Specialty Shop / Business, etc. () Office spaces of sf in area, accessed from the ground floor/level. Open space(s) as determined by the class. This space (or these spaces) should remain separate from the open space requirements of the residential component. Space(s) can be public or semi-private. (Hint: Some businesses on Fremont have small storefronts that expand into larger outdoor patios and dining areas.)

0-0 High School Design Competition A car share station accommodating a maximum of () compact cars; and/or a bike share station of a size deemed appropriate by the class. A residential building accommodating (0) housing units of a maximum,00 sf in area.* Additional program elements to accompany the residential component, as deemed appropriate by the class, such as a pool, recreation center, fitness center, business center, etc. Provide safe walking paths and bicycle paths for residents to walk, ride or exercise throughout the community. As best as possible, be considerate of proper solar orientation. A student may choose to develop one of the commercial programs incorporated into the master plan in lieu of a residential unit. *Note: The class should collaboratively design the 0 unit residential component shell (Exterior walls and primary circulation) for students to subdivide and develop as necessary. The building is not limited on height, so the footprint can vary drastically. For example, (0),00sf units =,000sf. Considering % of the total area for circulation (,00sf), this gives you a building of approximately,00sf. -At () stories and,0sf per floor (,00sf/), a building footprint could potentially be 0 x. -At () stories and,00sf per floor (,00sf/), a building footprint could potentially be 0 x 0. -At (0) stories and,0sf per floor (,00sf/0), a building footprint could theoretically but impractically be x 0. Explore your options. Responsibly increase square footage for circulation and additional program areas as desired. Examples: Throughout the world, there are several good examples of this type of development. You are highly encouraged to research these and more. Below are just a few examples: Unite d Habitation Le Corbusier Simmons Hall at MIT (dormitory) Steven Holl House - of Weissenhofsiedlung Ludwig Mies van der Rohe There are also many good local examples as well: Soho Lofts 00 S Las Vegas Blvd Eleventh Street Lofts Carson Ave Newport Lofts 00 Hoover Ave

0-0 High School Design Competition Residential Criteria: The design of the individual unit must abide by the following restrictions: Interior space must by,00 sf maximum Unit may not be more than () stories in height Unit must include access to a form of open space, separate from the public or semi-private space(s) created on the master plan. (Hint: Open spaces do not necessarily mean large spaces. As well, residential open spaces may abut or adjoin the master-planned open spaces, but must retain some form of ownership or privacy to the individual unit.) The further development of the individual unit should be designed as deemed appropriate by the student. The following spaces are suggestions only: - bedrooms (minimum of one window per bedroom) Living Room Dining Room Kitchen Laundry Room - Bathrooms Additional rooms as necessary or desired Due Dates: 0 March Submit Participation Form (faxed or delivered) 0 March Submit Projects to: Attn: Ryan Sisti Gensler Howard Hughes Parkway, Suite Las Vegas, NV p March Judging 0 April Awards Ceremony th Street School 0 S. Fourth Street Las Vegas, NV

0-0 High School Design Competition Submittal Requirements: Class Submittal: The Master Plan shall show the layout of the entire site. Locate the major elements listed in the Master Plan Requirements section of the program. This plan should be designed as a class. The best designed master plan will be awarded the Dale S. Scheideman Award (prize is given to the school). Master Plan submittals are to consist of drawings, x or x, blue or black line prints, or original plots. Provide only the following information on the title block located on the lower right hand corner of the sheet: Name of High School AIA High School Design Contest 0-0 Individual Student Submittal: An individual student is to choose and develop a typical residential unit within the footprint of the residential building determined by the class as part of the master plan. A student may choose to develop one of the commercial programs incorporated into the master plan in lieu of a residential unit. As well, the student is required to develop a facade for the overall building that is considerate and innovative. The cover sheet of the submittal must show either the master plan with the developed space clearly highlighted, or a rendering of the project. Individual student submittals will be judged for: Best of School Award, Merit Award, Honor Award and Honorable Mention. The following drawings are required: Site Plan / Master Plan The developed space must be clearly highlighted. This should be the first page of the drawings, or the second page if the student chooses to include a rendering on the cover. Overall Floor Plan Provide a drawing showing the overall floor plan of the building, with the breakdown of the individual units. These units do not have to be as developed as the individual units, but should show adjacencies and relationships. (Hint: copy/paste and mirror. Each unit does not have to be a different design.) Individual Floor Plans Provide a floor plan for each level of the unit or developed space. Building Elevation(s) Primary building elevation showing developed façade is required; others are optional. The primary elevation should capture the student s innovative design approach to entry as it relates to the site, and how the user experiences arrival / departure. The building façade should also enhance and create visual variety through its unique architectural features and use of materials. Perspective Drawing One minimum (Revit, AutoCAD, Hand-Drawn, etc. are all acceptable). Perspective drawings can by of an exterior view or interior view. (Hint: Quality over Quantity. Rather than taking several undeveloped views of a model, consider taking one or two exceptional views with a higher degree of development.) Design Statement Write one short paragraph describing what you are trying to achieve in your design and how your concept ties in to the selected architect / firm ideas (maximum of words). Highly Recommended Include a sheet which illustrates any site or building analyses, concept sketches, photographs of schematic models, and research completed in order to help you develop your site.

0-0 High School Design Competition Optional Students may also include additional drawings that help describe / explain their project. These may include additional sketches, details, landscape plan, renderings / perspectives, etc. *Use spell check and have a mentor, parent, and/or teacher read your design statement!!! *Be considerate of the layout of sheets, text size, etc. Once complete and prior to submitting, check your project and sheet set one more time to ensure no sheets are missing. Individual student submittals are to consist of drawings, x or x, blue or black line prints, or original plots. All work presented and submitted must be completed by the individual student. Projects may be worked on in class, at home or as determined by the teacher. Bind the sheets along the left edge, either by stapling or coil binding. Do not tape, fold together or paper clip the sheets. Provide only the following information on the title block located on the lower right hand corner of all sheets: Student initials (do not include names) Student ID number Name of High School AIA High School Design Contest 0-0

0-0 High School Design Competition Judging Criteria: Awards will be made based on the merits of your design, the validity of the programming solution, and completeness of drawings. The design statement should inform the judges about your design intent so that they may judge how well you have met your design goals. Overall Design The top entries will be those whose architectural aesthetics are innovative and enhance the architectural and community based needs of the district. The student(s) design must emulate what the Fremont East District is and stands for. Technical Approach The top entries will be those that accurately graphically represent their design ideas through plans, enlarged drawings, sketches, sections etc. The top entries will meet all of the requirements listed under the Individual Student Submittal section of this program and should be graphically represented in a clear and neat manner so that it is easy to read and understand. Use your mentors. Have them show you the many great examples that are out there to spur imagination. Let them help you develop your designs and drawings throughout the year. Be openminded to their suggestions and be willing to experiment. Be creative. Have fun.
