2 Silent Auction: Jane Austen Costume Mannequin* by fabric artist Mary Roehr Retail Value: $1, Opening Bid: $ Minimum Increase: $25.00 This miniature costume is done in half-scale (it is exactly half the size of a Size 12 human body) and is 30" high. Miss Austen's 1810 empire gown is made from more than two yards of antique muslin -- due to the fineness of the fabric, nearly four times the circumference of her midriff is gathered and flows without being bulky. The 1" silk purple grosgrain ribbon enhances the delicate lavender flowers in the muslin and the vintage eyelet finishing the sleeves and neck is embroidered in a heart and flower design. Mary Roehr is a fabric artist and author who creates historically inspired costumes for museums, historic homes and private collections. She has taught in residence at the Costume Design Center in Colonial Williamsburg for two years, instructing seamstresses how to make authentic 18th-century clothing for interpreters. Roehr's costumes are one-of-a-kind works of art, each individually created without patterns and thus never duplicated.
