For my first question I asked my peers, which superheroes they found interesting. These are the answered I received: Adam: Batman and Spiderman because I enjoy the stories but i feel i relate to Spiderman Dale: rorschach, back story, hes just a man no special powers Joe: Ironman - Who wouldn't want a big flying metal suit with rockets and lasers and money. Tom A: The winter soldier, backstory interests me Thomas s: Batman. I like how he doesn't actually have superpowers. it makes what he does more admirable in that way. Tom S: The Hulk because of his similarities to Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde Mark: The Champions - A TV series from the 60's where 3 people were given super powers by an advanced secret civilisation in Tibet. They could communicate with each other using telepathy and could foresee the future. I liked it because it was more believable to me than the usual superheros of the time. For my second question I asked which superhero they found least interesting. Adam: Aquaman, and it needs no reason, hes just bad Dale: Aqua man, Vibe Joe: Hawkeye - Jeremy Renner is cute but the character is pointless and useless Tom A: the hulk, he gets angry and transforms, wow. Thomas s: Aquaman. because he's a badly designed and generally uninteresting character. Toms: Superman, very to dimensional and no human emotion. Mark: Deadpool -Probably because I've not read the comics and so watching the movie was just confusing - I didn't get all the in jokes. For my third question, I asked which costume did they fin most effective. Adam: Something that promotes hope but is also dark and mysterious Dale: Batman, Green arrow - The suits are effective, functional and at time adaptive. Joe: Ironman, Starlord Tom A: the winter soldier, the simplicity of the matte black and shiny metal
Thomas s: Batman. I like how he uses it to his advantage, by blending into his environment Tom S: The Joker's design is sticking and unique to him. He stands out in anything he appears in ad has a distinct style. Mark: I think more subtle designs are more effective - I guess it depends on whether the character needs to stand out and be obvious in every scene. For my fourth question, I asked how they would design as character and why. Adam: As i said, something the promotes hope but is dark and mysterious Dale: Functional Armour, adaptive to the environment, adaptive camouflage Joe: Something like Ironman but more futuristic or star wars-esque like starlord Tom A: a simple costume with with an unassuming sillouette, reasons Thomas s: one that is practical, something that would actually be useful/ helpful to them rather then be a hindrance Tom S: Something tats more minimalist b striking at the same time, too much detail tens to sour the look. Mark: I would mix maybe some retro elements into the design - so a for a male super hero a suit, tight fitting but with zips and lycra content. Colours would be black or dark but with red/blue emblems on the sleeves. If the character appears in a different time period then he/she would adapt to the costumes of the time For question five, I asked if they knew any original character backstories. Adam: Many, So many Dale: lots Joe: Spiderman only wanted to deliver pizzas Tom A: Rocket Racoon Thomas s: Saitama (one punch man) Tom s: The Hulk Mark: I don't have any useful knowledge of any. For question six, I asked what backstory they'd give their character and why. Adam: have the cliche, death of a loved one as this is good at kickstarting a superhero Dale: Some tragic event happens to the person causing them to become the
hero. Joe: dude called Darren and his superhero name is Doctor Distructor. Delivers milk by day using his float and then by night he kicks ass Tom A: Try and avoid chiches as they can ruin characters Thomas s: try to be original and make sure what I want to do hasn't been done before. or if it has see if it can be done better. Tom S: Someone from a very normal and boring background. I feel as though it would give more a human touch to the character. Mark: I like the idea of a character who has a rather ordinary life working in a call centre. He accidentally stumbles through a time portal and has the power to choose the time period by thinking of the time in his head. He is presented with dilemmas in each time period he visits. He has the power to change the future - this can have a positive or negative effect on society. For question seven, I asked what would would make a superhero look/feel vulnerable. Adam: Unmasked, Exposed by death of loved ones Dale: Perhaps the villan finding out who their family, friends are them being in danger. Losing their power. Joe: No one has respect for heroes like Capt. America because they wear spandex so it makes them a bigger target. Tom A: removal of powers to show they struggle without them Thomas s: loss of powers. secret identify revealed Tom s: The human side, behind the mask/cascade Mark: He would be vulnerable because he is always in a time period he is not familiar with. So, he may choose to be in the trenches in WW1 with the knowledge of what will happen when he goes over the top but will have no real experience of fighting in that way. For question eight, I asked if they knew any obscure superheroes. Adam: Gwenpool/Spidergwen Dale: Diamond Joe: No Tom A: Iron Fist Thomas s: matter eater man, red tornado, iron fist Tom S: Animal Man Mark: Not really For question nine, I asked if they knew of any strong female leads in sci-fi genre.
Adam: Supergirl - Wonderwoman - Gwenpool Dale: Supergirl, Retro girl, Wonder woman Joe: Katniss Everdeen Tom A: Squirrel Girl Thomas s: Hit girl from Kick ass Batgirl from the Batman series squirrel girl Tom S: Black Widow Mark: I don't know any!! For question ten, I asked why do you think it's important to have a strong female lead. This is the response I got to this question. Adam: it shows people that female heroes are just as good as men, even better Dale: To even out the many male superhero leads empower women. Joe: Bit of change Tom A: Balance of the equation Thomas s: diversity and role models for young female superhero fans Tom S: To have a mix of femininity with masculinity and create better chemistry Mark: It is important to have strong female lead to counterbalance the assumption that all superheros are males saving helpless females. For question eleven, I asked what superpower they would create and why. This is the repose I got to this question: Adam: Elemental or Human or a mix of both Dale: weapons, martial art and detective skills, with the supermans powers plus magic. Joe: Hands shoot rockets, can fire lasers from his eyes, can levitate Tom A: The ability to go back 5 seconds into the past Thomas s: the ability to eat anything so your mouth can grow to the size it needs to be so if you wanted you could eat a skyscraper in one bite Tom S: The power to open portals to other dimensions and worlds, so they could explore Mark: The power to travel to any time period in the past or future. They would also have the power to morph into male or female bodies. For question twelve, I asked what superpowers they found interesting.
Adam: I Find elemental powers interesting, but i do like superpowers that are 'human' like green arrow Dale: speed - the speed force a different reality, time travel, phasing Joe: Telekinesis and Mind Reading Tom A: Any abilities to do with time, the butterfly effect interests me Thomas s: time travel because you can be really creative with it and it allows for some great stories, settings and scenarios Tom S: Teleportation Mark: See 11. For question thirteen, I asked if they thought superheroes should have sidekicks and give there reasons why. Adam: Not every super hero needs side characters as they work best alone and side characters hold back their individual story Dale: Not necessarily as it could take the spot light off of the character. as well as making it seem like the character is more vunerable Joe: Nah - embarrassing and steal the limelight Tom A: No, the majority are forced and steal the seriousness of the character Thomas s: not every superhero, sometimes it seems forced and unnecessary but if the superhero needs someone to work off it could be ok Tom S: No. Simply because it sometimes feels like lazy writing to add another character to as the inner conflict of the main character. Mark: Not really. Some are there for comedic effect or to protect their real identities - like in Superman/Clarke Kent relationship with Lois Lane. For question fourteen, I asked what they thought an original super villain should look like and to give their reasons why. Adam: Dark and mysterious and a little bit crazy because this makes them great villians and good opponents to the hope the heroes bring Dale: Insane, crazy, ruff, but a hint of smartness Joe: Black body armour (full body), gas mask, very buff Tom A: A really simple costume, more jeans and hoodies rather than extravagant suits, A villain should be human and feel real Thomas s: bright colours, easy going, good sense of humour-but also a sick and twisted one Tom S: Insane but highly intelligent, they should be embodiment abandoned
sanity Mark: I think they could look quite harmless rather than the typical "villain". A bit like the character portrayed in the US version of Oldboy. For question fifteen, I asked what they liked to see in a super villain backstory. Adam: Their origins and how they became this way, as it helps to understand the character better Dale: Perhaps that they could be come a villan because of a tragic event caused by the law. as well as them being a nerd and become evil not a hero because of it. Joe: reasons as to why he became a villain and what his motives are Tom A: Obscure childhood drama e.g. not bullying or parent issues, Thomas s: mysterious-the less you know about a villain the scarier/more intimidating they become Tom S: Mental anguish, pain, suffering but also a sense of normality, someone who used to be an average joe. Mark: I'd like to see some depth to explain an event that caused their change to villainous ways. We maybe would be tempted at first to empathise with the character if they had lost someone close to them in disturbing circumstances. For question sixteen, I asked if they preferred to see the sci-fi genre in comic books or film. Adam:I prefer it in both as it is escapism if the story is set in a futuristic setting Dale: It depends on what mood I'm in. Joe: Films - brings everything to life Tom A: If it makes sense to the story Thomas s: films-allows to experiment with interesting visuals. Tom S: Both, adds an infinite number of possibilities and expands the boundaries or reality Mark: Only really seen in films. For question seventeen, I asked for them to write their top three superhero movies Adam: Logan, The Dark Knight and the amazing spiderman, because they are dark and really show the characters potential Dale: Spiderman 2, Logan, Iron man 1, the dark knight rises.
Joe: V for Vendetta - badass bloody violence Dark Night/DK Rises - brilliant villains Watchmen - brilliant stunts and violence Tom A: deadpool, comedy - Kick Ass, comedy - Scott Pilgrim VS. The World, very self aware Thomas s: Spider-man 2: I like how it makes peter just as interesting as spiderman which is something you very rarely see, its also a really fun movie with great action that doesn't take itself too seriously. The dark Knight: the complete opposite of Spiderman 2. it shows that superhero movies can be taken seriously with a great plot and great characters. Logan: a really well made action/superhero movie that acts as a fitting conclusion to the wolverine movies, it makes us actually think that the characters could die which adds stakes to the story. Tom S: The Dark Knight, Unbreakable and Deadpool Mark: Superman , The Dark Knight and Hulk No real reasons for my choice. For question eighteen, I asked for them to write their least top three superhero movies Adam: Spiderman 3, Fantastic 4, Batman vs superman as they all ruined their franchises Dale: Green lantern, Batman Vs Superman, Fantastic four the new one. Joe: Capt. America, Avengers and Spiderman Tom A: Suicide squad, awful plot - Spiderman 3, horrible acting - The Amazing Bulk, Just... just search it Thomas s: X-men origins wolverine-no reason to care as all the main characters are invincible, the amazing spiderman 2-a mess of a story with an awful soundtrack and awful everything really, suicide squad- butchers great characters like the Joker and Harley Quinn with cringe-worthy dialogue and acting and bad cinematography Tom S: Superman (all of them), Amazing Spiderman and Suicide Squad Mark: Deadpool - Too many references I didn't understand or cared about. Not watched any other superhero movie in last 4/5 years. For question nineteen, I asked them to give three personality ideas for a super hero character. Adam: Lonely, mentally lost, lots of internal life problems Dale: Ruff and gritty but at the same time kind and controlled. Responsible. Joe: Kindness and honour and loyalty Tom A: Sarcastic, self aware and antihero Thomas s: comedic, good hearted but naive- could be an arc, imperfect. Tom S: Leader, committed and wise
Mark: 1. self deprecating 2. ability to comfortably fit in to a wide range of potentially difficult situations.
