Stunning Series that Trips at the Finish Line By David Swan They say that the journey is half the fun but in the case of Seven Soldiers I would say it s far more than half the fun. The problem is that after 29 fascinating, enthralling issues the ending is a total mess. Grant Morrison has so many neat ideas in the 30 issue tour de force but in the finale it s like he took all his ideas, tossed them in a blender and splattered the results onto the pages. If someone reads the ending and says, wow, that was a tight and coherent ending God bless that person but I m willing to bet 95+% of readers mutter a soft WTF. Grant Morrison s idea was to take seven of DC s lesser known characters, recreate them and then allow other writers to run with his ideas. I can t say it really worked since I don t remember any of the seven getting their own series. Zatanna, who is about a B-level superhero, wasn t altered much but a nearly unknown character like Klarion the Witch Boy was radically altered. Book one focused on Zatanna, Klarion, The

6 Shining Knight and The Guardian while book 2 brings in Frankenstein, Mister Miracle and Bulletgirl. I can honestly say there isn t a clunker in the batch and I would have enjoyed reading more about any one of these characters. Readers are also treated to some first rate artwork from Doug Mahnke, Yanick Paquette and the great J.H. Williams. It s a great series and I enjoyed it even more the second time through but this is far from the only time Morrison seemed to lose all focus with the ending. In fact I call these kinds of endings Morrison Endings. It was a great disappointment because this is not a short series. I still recommend the series because there is a lot to love with lots of creativity and emotion and maybe a third reading someday will bring more coherency but for now I m just scratching my head in bewilderment. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Two books contain the entire arc By Christopher Buteau But it is good. It is Morrison creating craziness with older less used characters. The result is pretty entertaining.
