5 A Alligators Adore Apples characters: Al, Adam, Alfred, Annie, Abby, Amy (all alligators), Ms. Alice Alligator At Alligator School, there were lots of alligators Al, Adam, Alfred, Annie, Abby, and Amy. All the alligators at Alligator School adored apples. So did their teacher, Ms. Alice Alligator. Every afternoon, Ms. Alice and the alligators picked a lot of apples from the apple tree. First, the alligators cut up the apples. After that, the alligators baked apple pies. The alligators also made apple jelly and put it in jars. The alligators flipped lots of apple pancakes, too. And after all that, each alligator stuck an apple on a stick and dipped it in candy for an amazing apple dessert. We make apple jelly, we make apple pie, we make apple pancakes, you and I! said the alligators together. But one day Ms. Alice Alligator put away all the apple recipes. It s apricot time! said Ms. Alice Alligator. That afternoon, all the alligators picked apricots from the apricot tree. What will we do with all the apricots? asked Ms. Alice Alligator. And they did. We ll make apricot jelly, we ll make apricot pie, we ll make apricot pancakes, you and I! answered the alligators. 8

7 B The Big Blue Balloon characters: Bill, Ben, Barb, Betty, bluebird One day, Bill, Ben, Barb, and Betty found the biggest blue balloon you ever did see. Let s blow up this big blue balloon, said Bill. First Ben blew up the balloon. The balloon got bigger. Then Barb blew up the balloon. The balloon got even bigger. Then Betty blew up the balloon. The balloon got bigger and bigger. Then Bill blew up the balloon. The balloon was very, very big now. We blew up the blue balloon. Now we should stop before it pops, they said. Bill, Ben, Barb, and Betty balanced the balloon in their hands. Bill, Ben, Barb, and Betty bounced the balloon back and forth. But then, a wind blew and the big blue balloon went up, up, up. A beautiful bluebird was flying by. The bluebird saw the balloon coming and stuck out its beak. Bang! The big blue balloon broke with a great big bang. Bill, Ben, Barb, and Betty waved good-bye to the biggest blue balloon you ever did see. 10
