Earth and Sky Materials Contents Introduction Kit Inventory List Materials Supplied by the Teacher Preparing a New Kit Preparing the Kit for Your Classroom Care, Reuse, and Recycling Copyright The Regents of the University of California Not for resale, redistribution, or use other than classroom use without further permission. Introduction The Earth and Sky kit contains Teacher Toolkit: Earth and Sky 1 Investigations Guide: Earth and Sky 1 Teacher Resources: Earth and Sky 1 FOSS Grade 3 Science Resources Equipment for 32 students A new kit contains enough consumable items for at least two classroom uses before you need to resupply. FOSS modules use central materials distribution. You organize all the materials for an investigation on a single table called the materials station. As the investigation progresses, one member of each group gets materials as they are needed, and another returns the materials when the investigation is completed. You place items at the station students do the rest. Individual photos of each piece of FOSS equipment are available online for printing. For updates to information on materials used in this module and access to the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), go to Links to replacement-part lists and customer service are also available on FOSSweb. 6 Earth and Sky Materials Preparing a New Kit If you are preparing a new kit for classroom use, you can do several things initially that will save time during routine preparation for instruction. 1. Separate eight pieces of gray granite and conglomerate Separate the pieces of gray granite and pieces of conglomerate into two groups: rocks that students will tumble (16 rocks of each kind), and samples that will not be tumbled but used as a control (4 rocks of each kind). This allows multiple classes to tumble the rock and still have some unmarred rocks for comparison. 2. Obtain safety goggles and gloves Check your district regulations regarding the use of safety goggles. Students will be using small amounts of vinegar in Investigations 1, 2 and 3. Safety goggles can be purchased from Delta Education. 36 Full Option Science System

Preparing the Kit for Your Classroom Some preparation is required each time you use the kit. Doing these things before beginning the module will make daily setup quicker and easier. 1. Get to know the rocks and mineral Familiarize yourself with the 6 rocks used in the module Check the samples and order replacements if necessary. (Those marked might occasionally need replacement.) Mineral sample: 2 Calcite, large Rock samples: 10 Basalt 30 Limestone 10 Marble 10 Sandstone Rock pieces: 40 Conglomerate pieces 40 Granite, gray, pieces The rock samples in the kit are permanent equipment for the most part and are not consumable. Their appearance may change a little bit due to handling, the scratch test, and vinegar immersion, but they should be reusable time and again. Washing the samples with a little dishwashing detergent will help restore their sparkle. The 40 gray granite pieces and 40 conglomerate pieces are the exception. They are used in the physical weathering activity and are meant to wear down over time. But they can be used a number of times before they are completely worn down and need replacement. There are 40 of each of these rocks in the kit. Eight of each should be retained as permanent control samples. 2. Check consumable materials A number of items in the kit are listed as consumable. Some of these items will be used up during the investigations (gravel, gray clay, self-stick notes, potting soil), and others will wear out and need replacement (paper plates, evaporation dishes, and some of the rocks). Before throwing items out, consider ways to recycle them and get your students involved in this process. Earth and Sky Module 37

Earth and Sky Materials NOTE The white clay is used with sand in the stream table in Investigation 2. The gray clay is used in Investigation 1 to make the soil samples. 3. Prepare or check four soil types (Investigation 1) In Investigation 1, Part 1, students investigate four soil samples. Use the materials in the kit to measure and mix these soil samples following the directions in Step 5 of Getting Ready. The recipe will make enough for two class uses. If you are not the first person to use the kit, check the kit for four labeled zip bags (Soil 1, Soil 2, Soil 3, Soil 4) prepared by the previous teacher. Check that there is enough soil in each labeled bag for your class to use. Each group will need 1 vial about 2/3 full of each soil type. 4. Check earth material (Investigation 2) The total volume of the earth material needed for one stream table is about 1 liter (L). If the kit has been used before, check that each of the two earth-material bags contains about 1 L of sand-clay mixture. If the bags seem to have the correct volume, add to each bag one 12-dram vial of white clay. White clay is usually lost during the stream-table investigations. If the bags don t have enough earth material, pour them together into a bucket. Add a quarter cup of clay to the bucket and mix. Use a 1 L container to measure a volume of the mixture for each of the two bags. If you still come up short, use the recipe below to make another bag. Additional bags of fine sand (1.35 kilograms [kg]/bag) and white clay (0.45 kg/bag) can be ordered from Delta Education. a. Add one plastic cup of clay (about 100 grams [g]) to a 1.35 kg bag of fine sand. That s about 200 milliliters (ml) of clay to 1 L of sand. b. Mix the materials in the zip bag until they are uniformly distributed. 5. Check vials and evaporating dishes The vials and evaporating dishes are reusable and should be rinsed and dried before going back into the kit. Check them for cracks and replace when necessary. 6. Use the FOSS tray The clear plastic FOSS tray was designed for this module. Each group of four students uses one tray. It is designed to hold four vials in corner sockets and in addition four evaporating dishes in the larger openings. It also serves as an organizer for rock and mineral samples. The trays nest for storage and stack for space efficiency while soil samples are settling or solutions evaporate during investigations. Vials, with no caps, placed in the corner sockets serve as support columns. 38 Full Option Science System

7. Check condition of containers A variety of containers are included in the kit. Check that all containers are clean and in good condition. Be sure to use the correct container for each investigation, and if you have questions, check the illustrations in the investigations, the kit inventory list, or the online photo cards of the individual pieces of equipment. Check the following items: Containers, 1/2 L Containers, 1 L Plastic cups Cup lids, dome-shaped Evaporation dishes Vials, 12 dram 8. Protect the hand lenses Check the hand lenses to make sure each is in a protective plastic cover (bag). Replace any covers that are missing. 9. Create new surfaces for the acid test The four rocks subjected to vinegar in Investigation 1, Part 3, might need to have fresh surfaces exposed where vinegar can react with the calcite. You can do this by rubbing a pair of rocks together to scratch the surfaces. 10. Acquire vinegar You will need about 1 L of white vinegar for Investigation Inventory card sets There are three different card sets used in this module. Inventory the sets to make sure none are missing. They are 9 sets of Erosion and Deposition cards, 10 cards/set 2 sets of Rapid Change cards, 16 cards/set 16 sets of Solar System cards, 18 cards/set Replacement sets are available from Delta Education. 12. Plan for cleanup This module uses containers and tools that must be cleaned, dried, and inventoried if they are to stay in top condition. This responsibility should be assumed by students. Assign one collaborative group to do this after each session. Plan where this cleanup will take place in the classroom (if you have a sink) or elsewhere in the school if a sink is not available in your room. All the plastic items in the kits are meant to be rinsed, dried, and reused. Earth and Sky Module 39

Earth and Sky Materials TEACHING NOTE The Letter to Family and Home/School Connections are also available electronically on FOSSweb. 13. Consider safety issues indoors and outdoors Two safety posters are included in the kit, one for science indoors and one for working outdoors. You should review the guidelines with students and post the posters in the room as a reminder. Getting Ready for Investigation 1, Part 1, offers suggestions for this discussion. Also be aware of any allergies that students in your class might have. 14. Provide safety goggles Follow your district guidelines for use of safety goggles and gloves for Investigations 1, 2, and 3, when students transfer small quantities of household vinegar from a cup to a vial. Check your district guidelines for the safe use of small quantities of household vinegar. 15. Photocopy notebook sheets You will need to make copies of science notebook sheets before each investigation. See Getting Ready for Investigation 1, Part 1, for ways to organize the science notebook sheets for this module. If you use a projection system, you can download electronic copies of the sheets from FOSSweb ( 16. Check FOSSweb for resources Go to FOSSweb to review the print and digital resources available for this module. 17. Plan for word wall As the module progresses, you will add new vocabulary words to a word wall or pocket chart, and model writing and responding to focus questions. Plan how you will do this in your classroom. You may also find it beneficial to use a pocket chart to display the equipment photo cards as reference for students as they gather needed items from the materials station for each part. Print the photo cards from FOSSweb. 18. Gather books from library Check your local library for books. Visit FOSSweb for a list of appropriate trade books that relate to this module. 19. Plan for letter home and home/school connections You will need to make copies of teacher master 1, Letter to Family, for the module and the Home/School Connection teacher masters for each investigation. 40 Full Option Science System

Care, Reuse, and Recycling When you finish teaching the module, inventory the kit carefully. Note the items that were used up, lost, or broken, and immediately arrange to replace the items. Use a photocopy of the materials list (the Kit Inventory List), and put your marks in the Equipment Condition column. Refill packages and replacement parts are available for FOSS by calling Delta Education at or by using the online replacement-part catalog ( Standard refill packages of consumable items are available from Delta Education. A refill package for a module includes sufficient quantities of all consumable materials (except those provided by the teacher) to use the kit with two classes of 32 students. Here are a few tips on storing the equipment after use. Inventory and bag the small items. Invesntory the cards sets. Wash vials, cups, and evaporation dishes. Be sure all equipment is dry before returning it to the kit. Rocks that have been in vinegar should be rinsed thoroughly with mild soapy water and dried. Sort rocks into labeled bags. Rinse and dry the wood angles before storing them. Dry earth material thoroughly and store in a plastic bag. Secure the lids on all containers of materials. Check quantity of consumables, and order more if necessary. The items in the kit have been selected for their ease of use and durability. Make sure that items are clean and dry before putting them back in the kit. Small items should be inventoried (a good job for students under your supervision) and put into zip bags for storage. Any items that are no longer useful for science should be properly recycled. Earth and Sky Module 41
