22 How many of you have played hearts or spadesor bridge or euchre? Or any card game with a trump and tricks? You will have an advantage so help your colleagues learn how to play the game (this is the cooperative learning part) *** Pass out packets CORRECTION When I was reviewing this morning I found a typo in the instructions Look at the second line of the paragraph with the side heading winning tricks It reads the person who played this card gathers up the trick and places it face in front of him or her. It SHOULD read places it face DOWN in front of him or her It s pretty minor but I didn t want it to confuse anybody. So now play a few open hands and make sure everyone understands the game. Everybody got it? (take up instructions from the participants) Now here comes the challenge we are going to start a tournament where you can t talk 22

26 Let s take a moment to look at everything that we have just done. A lot has happened in the past 20 minutes. 1. Team formation 2. Correction of the typo 3. Learninghow to play a new game 4. Practicing 5. Competitive Play with your home table 6. winning and moving to new table OR losing and staying behind 7. Noticing that something isn t quite right about how things are going 8. Trying to communicate non-verbally 9. How many agreed on a new set of rules? 10. then switched again and had to work with a new & different partner Some of the alterations were more subtle than others and it took longer to figure out there was a problem 26

27 Have you ever moved to a new unit or a new hospital and thought you knew the rules? Have you ever had someone new come into your environment and try to change things? Have you ever had an immediatereaction where you knew that you were right and another was wrong. Just to find out that you had different expectations? Do you think there are people out there who think they are working together under the same set of rules but maybe they are mistaken? Have you ever had difficulty communicating? What can we take away from this experience to help us when we go back to our work environments? Are there ways we can pre-emptively avoid some of these issues? Might you approach misunderstandings a bit differently? 27
