3 Hi. My name is Fred. I am a fire Hose. Fire causes Painful burns. With the help of squirt, we supply the water so firefighters can put out fires. But we would rather teach you how to stay safe. Did you know that hot water can burn as badly as fire? That is right! So can other things found in our homes. Especially during the holidays! Tell them what you mean. Holidays are fun, but they can be dangerous. Let s visit John and his Family. we will show you. Page 1

4 Hey, Fred! Hey, John. Hi, Mr. and Mrs. H. What are you doing??! We are working on our Halloween Costumes!! Oh Wow! Your Parents dress up, too? Yea My Dad is a total costume Nerd. he dresses up for ALL the Holidays. Page 2

5 Halloween is tomorrow!! what are you going to be? I am going as a zombie! my costume is ready to go! Do you want to see it? Let me put it on. Wow!! That is cool! Show me your zombie walk. John, It is not finished. Let me shorten some of those long pieces of fabric. Page 3

6 She is right, John. Fabric is flammable. That means it can catch on fire easily. if those long pieces of costume get close to a lit candle it can catch on fire. and Lots of Halloween decorations use candles. I never thought of that. Most people do not think of fire safety when having fun. But you always want to prevent fires and burns. Page 4

7 candles in the Jack-O-Lantern make it look really scary. But they can also be unsafe for Trick-Or-Treaters. Use battery operated candles in decorations. Over 1,000 houses burn every year because decorations catch on fire. Oh No! That is My Mom s pilgrim hat!! Does anyone know what holiday comes after Halloween? What is he wearing??? Yep. Your family dresses up for Thanksgiving, too?? Page 5

8 Thanksgiving means lots of cooking. Don t spoil your holiday by getting burned in the kitchen. On Thanksgiving morning, Mom prepares the Turkey while Dad cooks breakfast. I set the big table for our guests. But I have to be careful so mom will not use her OUTSIDE Voice!! Back away from the HOT SPOT!! We have to stay 3 feet away from the stove when anyone is cooking. Mom calls it the HOT SPOT. Hot Spot is a good name for it! Within the Hot Spot area, everyone must be careful not to get burned. Page 6

9 Hot liquid can spill over the top of pots. Dishcloths, oven mitts and wooden spoons can catch on fire if left near the hot stove top. I always turn the pot handles to the side and away from the edge. And i try to use the back burners. Did you know that boiling water can burn you in less than one second? Hot grease can pop up from a frying pan. Mom won t let Dad wear his baggy bathrobe in the kitchen. Tell him to keep a big lid handy to cover popping grease. she says that she does not want him to run outside in just pajamas if he catches the house on fire. long sleeves can get too close to the burner and catch on fire. I always stay near the stove when frying our bacon. oven mitts keep hands from getting burned. use dry oven mitts and dishcloths. I have to Watch What I Heat! Wet ones get hot fast. Page 7

10 No. Do not use those old outside lights inside the house. Especially not on the tree! Honey, I can t find the lights we bought last year. Can we just use the ones I found in the attic? Why not? They are just lights. John, your mom is right again. newer holiday lights are safer. Outside lights made many years ago get very hot. A hot light on a dry tree can start a fire. make sure lights are safe to use where you plan to use them. plug lights into a surge protector. Page 8

11 Even indoor holiday lights can over heat! we always unplug them when we go to bed. and when we leave the house. Many celebrations use candles. Snuff out candles before leaving the room. Hanukkah use a lighter or match with a long handle. Children should NEVER use matches. Keep candles away from an edge so they cannot get pulled down or knocked over. Keep matches out of their reach, too. Page 9

12 New Year s eve I love fireworks!! Dad, can I shoot the next one? You can help me shoot the roman Candle! I will Hold it tight. Wait!! You should NEVER hold a firework in your hand! fireworks can blow up fast. You can get burned or lose your finger. Even the container can get very hot and burn you. Page 10

13 Is it okay to hold sparklers? Sparklers cause more burns than any other type of firework. Sparklers can be held in your hand. Hold them in front of you. Don t point them at anyone. But be careful! Children under five years old are usually the ones hurt by sparklers. No matter what time of year, it is important to prevent burns because Thanks, guys! I learned a lot. 16 burn prevention Tips Stand by your pan!! Costumes - Avoid costumes with long or fluttering fabric. COoking - eye holes in masks should be large enough to clearly see out. - use a flashlight or glow sticks to see where you are going. Decorations - If a candle is used inside the pumpkin or Winter Holiday decoration, light it with a long fireplace style match or a utility lighter. - it is Better to Use battery operated Candles or a flashlight. - Do not leave food cooking on the stove top unattended. - do not leave oven door open. - Use a timer. - No running or playing near the stove. - Turn pot handles to the side. - Use the back burners. - Keep anything that can catch fire away from the burners. - Place lit candles far away from anything that can burn including trick-or-treaters or Holiday visitors, doorsteps, and walkways. stay away from open flames. -Do not wear loose fitting clothing when cooking. If your clothes catch on fire. Keep the stovetop, burners, and oven clean.
