3 Inaugural Public Auction Sale Number 1 - Sunday 4th March 2018 Lingfield Park Racecourse. Hello everyone and happy New Year! I m not sure which phrase best serves to herald our first Mayfair Auction: Out with the old, in with the new (apt for this time of year), rising like a phoenix from the ashes, like Napoleon s triumphant return from Elba or perhaps back like a couple of bad pennies (surely the most appropriate). Whichever it proves to be, I have great pleasure in presenting our catalogue. For those of you unfamiliar with us, Rick and I founded Apex Auctions back in You may wonder how I ve managed to work with him for so long (believe you me, I have) but, like an old married couple, we are still together after 24 years! In addition to the Postal Auctions we established, our Lingfield Park Racecourse Public Auctions became a significant feature in the philatelic calendar. Under the benevolent eye of Jasper and his Scholium team and with the youthful and energetic assistance of Josh, we are delighted to be continuing with this fine tradition. Whether you have responded to our website, one of the various stamp magazine adverts or provided your details at one of the shows we have attended, I hope you will find much of interest in the forthcoming sale. The sale commences with 30 Room lots, a marvellously varied jumble ranging from worthless floor sweepings to decent GB and Commonwealth and likely to produce a feeding frenzy akin to the first day of the Harrods sale. We then settle down, apply ourselves to the matter in hand and offer the all world collections which feature a lovely mint Commonwealth Ideal, lot 31 and used pair of Imperials, lot 32. Several good GVI collections and substantial Commonwealth stocks follow, along with around 100 boxes which are sure to prove popular. We are pleased to be able to offer a very fine range of Commonwealth one country collections, many replete with high values (check out the Falklands, Gibraltar, HK etc), some foreign (very fine Italy and area) and GB lots also. A strong GB section follows with very fine blacks and blues, a Rainbow Colour Trial and Houses of Parliament Envelope, then many highlights including a mint 2/- brown (and 3 fine used examples), 10/- SG 128 Specimen, both Anchor 1 with cds, a mint 5 orange (also 3 fine used) and additionally on blued paper used and Specimen. We are delighted to offer perhaps the rarest item in the sale, d sage green abnormal plate 17, one of fewer than 30 recorded examples. Also on offer, some exceptional u/m including 1 SG 212 and 320 (corner marginal), PUC 2½d with inverted wmk and rare blocks of 4 featuring Ed VII 10/- and 1 (SG 266), 5/- SG 401 and PUC 1. We have Ed VII shades, GV varieties, QE2 errors and some scarce Officials, including 1 IR SG O11 Specimen, also O15 and O35 used, O34 mint. From the Commonwealth we note fine Australia Roos, British East Africa r with inverted and reversed wmk, Cyprus 5, strong Falklands (incl Centenary set) and Gibraltar (the 1 issues plus , also /- with inverted and reversed wmk), HK with high values and a group of 1891 Jubilee varieties and Ireland Seahorses and varieties. KUT high values feature the 10, 25 and 50 Specimen, also Leewards varieties, Malaysia (with the superb Straits 1904 $5 corner marginal Plate blk) and Malta. 2 major rarities also, the Rhodesia 1 Double head error of colour mint and SWA /- in u/m blk of 4, one with No stop. Worthy of mention also and running throughout the sale are 1935 Jubilee varieties. As for the future, we will be holding our third auction, also at the Racecourse, in October. An exciting new development involves our second sale which will be a collaboration with David Feldman of Geneva, in London (just around the corner from here in the Westbury Hotel). This will be a live sale, held over 2 days in June. Details to follow. 4 As is the way with these things, all sorts of stories have been doing the rounds. This short narrative may well differ from what you have heard. The sale at Lingfield Park in July last year flew the Apex flag. At the time we said it was probably the last sale. Even that most thin cotton thread of continuance was dangled more in hope than expectation. The (most unexpected) decision to withdraw the Apex brand had already been taken by the Stanley Gibbons Board of Directors. To judge from the common tenor of the many letters, s, phone calls and face-to-face encounters we had in the days and weeks that followed, it seemed customers were as much saddened and perplexed by it as we were. Possibly even more so. Che sarà. Thus it must be though to be strictly accurate, Apex is still technically in business, merged with SG Auctions (see Whether you regard that distinction as simple semantics is up to you. It may help your musings to know that all the Apex staff, bar one (Josh), were made redundant and something like 90% of the stock sold off. Which I imagine greatly simplified the mechanics of the merger, if nothing else. The redundant staff included Tim and me. We were both invited to apply for different posts within SG. I decided not to, principally because I m 65 this year. Tim was in talks but ultimately chose to go his separate way. At which point the opportunity to form a new stamp business and to work together again, presented itself. We were both [your own adjective] enough to take the plunge, impending retirement notwithstanding. Josh subsequently offered his services, which we were delighted to accept. The financial backing comes from Scholium Group Plc, whose Chairman, Jasper Allen, is a financier who worked with us in the Noble Plc days ( ). A little incestuous, perhaps well, certainly but the stamp world is a small world. It does help that we are all known quantities to the others. No nasty surprises. Daily encounters with the shaving mirror excepted, of course. The Apex formula was of our creation and there seemed no good reason not to adopt a few of the ideas. In comments you made, the Lingfield Park venue and Apex s personal service were the two features you unambiguously most appreciated. Which made the choice of venue and the continuance of Apex s complimentary catering (you re welcome) easy decisions. That said, Mayfair Philatelic Auctions is neither New Apex nor Apex-lite. Nor will it be. It is a new business starting from scratch and there will be differences. Mayfair has no current plans to hold postal-only auction sales, for example. But we are pleased and not a little proud to announce that in December we reached an agreement with David Feldman SA of Geneva, one of the world s premier philatelic auction houses, to hold a collaborative sale on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th June in Mayfair, London. (Further details in due course). Welcome. Or welcome back. You choose. Rick I first got to know Tim Francis and Rick Warren when, as Chairman of Noble Investments, we agreed to acquire Apex Auctions, of which they were both founders. Some happy years ensued during which we discovered that if you didn t mind going to Lingfield Park on a Sunday you could partake of free sandwiches and a drink prior to taking part in the auction and meeting with some good people. After the takeover of Noble by SG I left and became involved as Chairman of Scholium Group whose principal business is dealing in antiquarian books and works of art. On meeting up with Rick and Tim again last year I floated the idea of a new philatelic auction company to complement our existing businesses. It was very easy, given the previous experience of working with them, for me to recommend to my Board that this longstanding team should receive our support to create a new business.
