Ohio CS13l 399-t231 KISLEV-TEVET 5152 A WORD TOGETHER Chanukah is not a children's holiday. True, its observance in most congregations is geared to the intelligence level and entertainment satisfaction of the very young with parties and plays, dreidels and gift wrappings. However, the message of the Festival of Red~ication is far too important to fool ourselves into thinking we have fulfilled our obligation to our faith if we have celebrated Chanukah merely by providing our youngsters with a good time. Is not the festival of Chanukah a hard earned. victory for freedom of conscience? While joy and joviality and the moving family ceremony for the kindling of the Chanukah lights are surely an important part of the holiday and are especially enjoyed by the children, must we not admit that the Chanukah occasion should serve as a strong reminder to all mature men that. each generation. in turn must defend freedom of worship if they wish to continue to enjoy it? Chanukah for adults means commitment to the principle that no person, no state, no nation has the right to pass a law regulating an individual's or a group's practice of religion. Chanukah challenges us to stand firm on the separation of church and state. Chanukah is for us adults. By our i.dealism and commitment we can hasten the day when the Chanukah candle will become a Perpetual light of Religious Freedom in a world which will be a Holy Sanctuary for all.mankind. Rabbi Lloyd R. Goldman AffJlia~d With The Union Of American Hcbnml c,ngregatjoru

3 LIGHTING THE CHA1fOKAH CANDLES The kindling of' the lights is the most signif'icant ceremony of' the Festival. It should be observed in a spirit of reverence and solemnity and in a beautif'ul and impressive manner. 1. The Chanukah candles should be kindled after nightfall. The Menorah should be placed near the window for public view. 2. On Friday night the Chanukah candles are kindled before nightfall and before the Sabbath candles. On Saturday night, they are kindled after the conclusion of the Shabbat. 3. On the fir$night, place one candle in the Menorah at the extreme right. Light the Shamash (the auxiliary candle) and recite the blessings. With the Shamash, light the candle in the Menorah. On the second night place two candles in the Menorah and so on, adding one candle each night of the festival. The candles in the Menorah are kindled from lef't to right. CHABUKA1i BLESSINGS (Recited after the Shamash is lit but before the other "candles are kindled) Baruch Ata Ah-do-nai Eh-lo-haynu Melech Ha'olam, asher kid'sha-nu b'mitz-vo-tav vitzi-va-nu l'had lik-nayr shel Chanukah. Blessed are You, 0 Lord our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments and cozmnanded us to kindle the light of Chanukah. Baruch Ata Ah-do-nai Eh-lo-~ynu Melech Ha'olam, she'asa ni'sim la'votaynu ba'ya'mim ha'haym ba'zman ha'zeh. Blessed are You, 0 Lord our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in days of old in this time of the year. (On the first night only) Baruch Ata Ah-do-nai Eh-lo-haynu Melech Ha-olam, she-he-che-ya-nu, v'ki-y'ma-nu, v'hi-gi-a-nu la'~ ha-zeh.
