CHRONOLOGICAL BIBLE STUDY LESSON 582 Revelation Lesson # 2

A few opening remarks Patmos Approx 10 x 6 mile Roman penal colony John s crime = Christianity Time mid 90 s AD

How does John introduce himself in vs 9? Not with any official title Brother and companion I the suffering He has the right to speak since he has suffered thru what his audience is or has been thru His right to speak did not come thru ecclesiastical appointment, but thru experience

What does Ezekiel along with Revelation 1. 9 say about why John could write this letter? Ezekiel I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the KebarRiver. And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days deeply distressed. John is not preaching from an easy chair he had walked the walk The Kingdom of God is one of courage and endurance Acts strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God, 2 Timothy Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

3. Revelation says One the Lord s Day what is the difference between The Sabbath & Sunday? Sabbath = Saturday Lord s Day = Sunday Jesus resurrected on Sunday

Compare Revelation 10 with the following and seek to understand On The Lord s Day, I was in the spirit Exodus On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. John heard a commanding voice as clear as a trumpet Ezekiel Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing. John was lifted up like a new heaven beyond this world

Compare Revelation 10 with the following and seek to understand On The Lord s Day, I was in the spirit Matthew And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. God s calling 1 Corinthians So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; When God calls we are changed 1 Thessalonians For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. The Lord is coming

Compare where John was physically [Patmos] with where he was in the spirit. Physically John was On the isle of Patmos- physical torment In the spirit Physical pain and torment do not affect being in the spirit

6. Revelation is the first vision describe what John saw. As we look at the first vision everything he sees has OT background and counterpart John knows the Scriptures that well

6. Revelation is the first vision describe what John saw. Revelations I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feetand with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.his face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. John saw the voice that was speaking 7 golden lampstands Someone like the Son of Man

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: LAMPSTAND Exodus Make a lampstandof pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. 32 Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand three on one side and three on the other. 33 Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. 34 And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. 35 One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair six branches in all. 36 The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold. 37 Then make its seven lampsand set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it. Comes from the Tabernacle in the wilderness where God met His people

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: LAMPSTAND 1 Kings Solomon also made allthe furnishings that were in thelord s temple: the golden altar; the golden tableon which was the bread of the Presence; 49 the lampstandsof pure gold (five on the right and five on the left, in front of the inner sanctuary); the gold floral work and lamps and tongs Comes from the Solomon s Temple 5 candlesticks of pure gold 5 on each side

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: Zechariah He asked me, What do you see? I answered, I see a solid gold lampstandwith a bowl at the top and seven lampson it, with seven channels to the lamps. Zechariah s vision of the candlesticks

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: THE MAN Daniel As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Daystook his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheelswere all ablaze. 10 A river of firewas flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the bookswere opened. 11 Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.i kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.) 13 In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, comingwith the clouds of heaven.he approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.his dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Power and authority are given to one like the son of man This is a direct message of the coming of Jesus

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: THE MAN -Exodus These are the garments they are to make: a breastpiece,an ephod,a robe,a woven tunic,a turbanand a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests. 5 Have them use gold, and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and fine linen. Describes the robe of the High Priest Jesus is The High Priest A High Priest had access to God

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: THE MAN Leviticus He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on. Sacred garments Picture of the High Priest s garb

What is said about the different parts of the vision from the following [how are they related]: THE MAN -Daniel I looked upand there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine goldfrom Uphazaround his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voicelike the sound of a multitude. The vision to Daniel about God s truth worn fine linin and a girt of fine gold Jesus is described as a divine messenger superior to all

The Vision The Lampstands represents the 7 churches (Verse 20) Robe down to His feet - represents the robe of the high priest - a symbol of His authority A golden sash around his chest an ancient sign of authority in the Middle East - A king or a tribal leader would wear such a sash His head and hair like wool - John is using terminology he understood and his audience understood - The word for whiteness is like that of pure white light - it represents his purity or His perfection in His holiness His eyes were like blazing fire -Part of Jesus job is judgment - Jesus as judge - Remember that "all authority was given to Him" (Matthew ) by God the Father - this includes judgment His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace - Heating bronze is a process used to rid impurities out of that bronze - Jesus in His role as "judge" separating the pure from the impure His voice was like the sound of rushing waters -Imagine the sound of waters crashing on rocks - John was banished to this island Patmos - This speaks to the power of Jesus voice - authority His right hand held seven stars - Verse 20 tells us the seven stars are seven angels that watch over the 7 churches His mouth came a sharp double-edged sword - New Testament references - comparing a sword to God's word (Hebrews Ephesians 6. 17)

8. What was John s reaction to the vision? Vs 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead Do you think John was scared?

9. Jesus is not mentioned, yet we know it is Jesus how? Vss17 & When I saw him, I fell at his feetas though dead. Then he placed his right hand on meand said: Do not be afraid.i am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!and I hold the keys of death and Hades. First and last I was dead and now I am alive I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Three times Isaiah referenced the First and the Last look at the following and note the use: Isaiah Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord with the first of them and with the last I am he. Isaiah This is what the Lord says Israel s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. Isaiah Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last.

11. What is John instructed to do in Revelation and why? Revelation Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. Verse 19 is actually an outline of the book of Revelation It is given as a command Jesus gives John at this point is to write what you have seen - the vision so far Chapter 1 - what is now describing the "seven churches Chapter 2 & 3 - what will take place later the events of Jesus Second Coming the rest of the book

From Revelation explains the following: Revelation The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. The seven Lampstands [vs 12-13] = the 7 churches The seven stars [vs 16] = the angels of the 7 churches
