2 ABOUT THESE EXERCISES - These exercises help children, preschool to age 6, prepare for standardized tests commonly used to screen for gifted programs. - These exercises are meant to be done together with your child. - There are five sections: Section 1: Identifying Similarities and Differences (p.4-7) Section 2: Shape Creation (p.8-9) Section 3: Classification (p.10-17) Section 4: Analogies (p.18-21) Section 5: Patterns (p.22-24) -There is also a bonus section containing questions which are a bit more advanced. Bonus Section: Identifying Similarities Using Pictures (p.25) Bonus Section: Identifying Similarities Using Shapes (p.26-28) - To make test prep more engaging, our books (and these exercises) include the characters on the first page. The characters are detectives who are trying to figure out the answers to the exercises - and they need your child s help! -The answer key is at the end. 3
3 Identifying Similarities and Differences SOPHIE NEEDS YOUR HELP TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS! Directions: Look at the items in the box. They are related in some way and belong together. 17 Analogies HELP MAY FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES IN THE EMPTY BOX! Directions: Look at these boxes that are on top. The pictures that are inside belong together in some way. Then, look at these boxes that are on the bottom. One of these boxes on the bottom is empty. Look next to the boxes. There is a row of pictures. Which one would go together with this picture that is in the bottom box like these pictures that are in the top boxes? Parent note: Analogies are a new kind of puzzle for most young kids. They compare sets of items, and the way they are related can easily be missed at first. Work through these together with your child so (s)he sees how the top set is related. Together, try to come up with a rule to describe how the top set is related. Then, look at the picture on the bottom. Take this rule, use it together with the picture on the bottom, and figure out which answer would follow that same rule. Here s an example to do together. Example (read this to your child): Helicopter is to sky as car is to. (Talk about the two pictures on top and try to come up with a rule. ) A helicopter travels in the sky. What about a car? Which of the answer choices would go with car the same way? Where does a car travel? (Go through answer choices and eliminate the incorrect ones first.) A road! A car travels on a road. 28.? 18
