6. Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals, and Percents How can you der numbers that are written as fractions, decimals, and percents? ACTIVITY: Using Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Wk with a partner. Decide which number fm (fraction, decimal, percent) is me common. Then find which is greater. a. 7% sales tax sales tax b. 0.7 cup of flour c. -inch wrench d. dollars e. 9% test sce 6 f. fluid ounces Fractions, Decimals, and Percents In this lesson, you will compare and der fractions, decimals, and percents. solve real-life problems. cup of flour 0.7-inch wrench.6 dollars 7 test sce.6 fluid ounces ACTIVITY: Ordering Numbers Wk with a partner to der the following numbers. % % 7% a. Decide on a strategy f dering the numbers. Will you write them all as fractions, decimals, percents? b. Use your strategy and a number line to der the numbers from least to greatest. (Note: Label the number line appropriately.) Chapter 6 ms_red pe_060.indd Percents /0/ 4:0:4 PM
Math Practice Make Sense of Quantities What strategies can you use to determine which number is greater? ACTIVITY: The Game of Math Card War Preparation: Cut index cards to make 40 playing cards. Write each number in the table onto a card. To Play: Play with a partner. Deal cards facedown to each player. Each player turns one card faceup. The player with the greater number wins. The winner collects both cards and places them at the bottom of his her cards. Suppose there is a tie. Each player lays three cards facedown, then a new card faceup. The player with the greater of these new cards wins. The winner collects all 0 cards and places them at the bottom of his her cards. Continue playing until one player has all the cards. This player wins the game. 7% % % %.% 40% 4 4% 0.% % % % % % % 4. IN YOUR OWN WORDS How can you der numbers that are written as fractions, decimals, and percents? Give an example with your answer.. All but one of the U.S. coins shown has a name that is related to its value. Which one is it? How are the names of the others related to their values? Use what you learned about dering numbers to complete Exercises 4 7, 6, and 7 on page 4. Section 6. Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
6. Lesson Lesson Tutials When comparing and dering fractions, decimals, and percents, write the numbers as all fractions, all decimals, all percents. EXAMPLE Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents a. Which is greater, 6%? Study Tip It is usually easier to der decimals percents than to der fractions. Write as a percent: = 00 = % % is less than 6%. So, 6% is the greater number. b. Which is greater, 79% 0.0? Write 79% as a decimal: 79% = 79.% = is greater than 0.0. So, 79% is the greater number. Exercises 4. Which is greater, % 7?. Which is greater, %? Remember EXAMPLE To der numbers from least to greatest, write them as they appear on a number line from left to right. Real-Life Application You, your sister, and a friend each take the same number of shots at a soccer goal. You make 7% of your shots, your sister makes 9 of her shots, and your friend makes 0.67 of his shots. Who made the fewest shots? Write 7% and 9 as decimals. You: 7% = 7.% = 0.7 Sister: 9 Graph the decimals on a number line. 4 = = Friend: 0.67 You: 7% 0.7 Sister: is the least number. So, your friend made the fewest shots. Chapter 6 Percents
Exercises 6. You make 7% of your shots, your sister makes of her shots, and your friend makes 0.7 of his shots. Who made the most shots? EXAMPLE Real-Life Application Washington: 0 Michigan: 0.0 New Yk: 6% The map shows the ptions of the U.S. population that live in five states. List the five states in der by population from least to greatest. Ohio: Califnia: 0. Begin by writing each ption as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent. State Fraction Decimal Percent Michigan 00 New Yk 6 00 Washington 0 Califnia 00 Ohio 0.0 % % 0.0 % 0. % % Graph the percent f each state on a number line. Michigan: % Washington: % Ohio: 4% New Yk: 6% Califnia: % 0% % 4% 6% % 0% % 4% The states in der by population from least to greatest are Washington, Michigan, Ohio, New Yk, and Califnia. 4. The ption of the U.S. population that lives in Texas is. The ption that lives in Illinois is Reder the states in Example including Texas and Illinois. Section 6. Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
6. Exercises Help with Homewk. NUMBER SENSE Copy and complete the table.. NUMBER SENSE How would you decide whether 9% is greater? Explain.. WHICH ONE DOESN T BELONG? Which one does not belong with the other three? Explain your reasoning. 40% Fraction Decimal Percent % 4% 9+(-6)= +(-)= 4+(-9)= 9+(-)= Tell which number is greater , 9%. %, , 7% 7. 0%,. 0.06, 6% 9. 76%, %,. 0.,.%. 7%, 4. 40%, , 0%. 0%, 7 9 Use a number line to der the numbers from least to greatest. 6. %,, %, 0.6,. 4 0, 0.9, 7, 4% 9. 0.%,, ,, 6.%,.6, 7%. 7, 0.44, 4.7%, 0 0. TEST You answered out of questions crectly on a test. Did you reach your goal of getting at least 0%?. POPULATION The table shows the ptions of the wld population that live in four countries. Order the countries by population from least to greatest. Country Brazil India Russia United States Ption of Wld Population.% Chapter 6 Percents
