2 The Quantile Framework for Mathematics GAMES Lucky Leftovers Getting Ready What You ll Need Leftovers game rules Multiplication Table (optional) Math Refresher for Parents Have No Fear Here are a few basic concepts to jog your math memories. Overview The object of Lucky Leftovers is to practice division skills, having fun adding up the remainders, or leftovers. Lucky Leftovers should be played with two players or with several players divided into two teams. For this game, you need to remember some basic division facts. A division problem can be written as 4 2 or 24 The 2 is called the divisor and the 4 is called the dividend. When the dividend cannot be divided equally by the divisor, the number leftover is the remainder (R). 7 2 = 3 R1 There are 3 sets of 2 in 7 (equaling 6) and there is 1 leftover. Playing the Game Reverse the Object of the Game For a change, the person with the smallest total of remainders can be the winner. Remember you have the Multiplication Table for support. Leftover Game Rules Choose ranges for both the divisor and the dividend. For example, allow the dividend to range from 11 to 50 and the divisor to range from 2 to 6. Write these ranges in the box labeled Range of Number Choices on the game board. Hint: Choose dividend numbers that are much bigger than the divisor numbers. Player 1 selects a dividend from the range of values in the dividend box. Player 2 chooses a divisor from the range of values in the divisor box. Players divide the chosen dividend by the chosen divisor. The score for Player 2 is the remainder from this division problem. This completes the first round. The players reverse roles. Player 2 selects a dividend that is different than the dividend number selected earlier. Player 1 chooses any divisor from 2 to 6 (even if the number was selected earlier).

3 Players divide the dividend by the chosen divisor. The score for player 1 is the remainder of this division problem. This completes the second round. Continue to play for 4 rounds, then total the scores for each player. The player with the greatest total from the remainders WINS! Example Round 1 Round 2 Total Pamela Darrell Round 1: Darrell chooses 47 for Pamela s dividend and Pamela selects 4 as her divisor. The players divide 47 by 4 and determine it is 11 with a remainder of 3. So Pamela scores 3 points Pamela chooses 32 for Darrell s dividend and Darrell chooses 3 as his divisor. The players divide 32 by 3 which is 10 with a remainder of 2. Therefore, Darrell scores 2 points. Round 2: Pamela chooses 35 for Darrell s dividend and Darrell chooses 24 for Pamela s dividend. Pamela chooses 5 as her divisor for a remainder of 4. Darrell chooses 4 as his divisor for a remainder of 3. After two rounds, Pamela has scored 7 points and Darrell has scored 5 points.
