1 The summary on raptors and owls ringing in Slovakia in 2009 Sumarizácia krúžkovania dravcov a sov v roku 2009 na Slovensku Vladimír SLOBODNÍK & Roman SLOBODNÍK Abstract: The article provides basic information about the number, species and recoveries of ringed birds of prey and owl species in Slovakia in The report follows similar papers from the following periods: , and In 2009 a total of 1,222 individuals were ringed in Slovakia, of which 856 individuals were birds of prey (18 species) and 366 individuals were owls (8 species). From the total number, 719 birds of prey and 257 owl nestlings were ringed. In comparison with the previous year the number of ringed birds of prey and owls increased by 43%. Key words: ringing, recoveries, migration Vladimír Slobodník, I. Krasku 8/5, SK Prievidza, Slovakia. vladimir.slobodnik@gmail.com. Roman Slobodník, I. Krasku 8/5, SK Prievidza, Slovakia. kruzkysk@gmail.com. Introduction Since 2000, when the Slovakia Bird Ringing Centre was founded, the results of raptors and owls ringing have been presented in the summary reports about bird ringing in Slovakia (Slobodník 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, Slobodník & Šnírer 2001, Slobodník & Sárossy 2007, Slobodník & Slobodník 2009). From 2002 the separate reports containing only data about birds of prey and owls ringing in Slovakia have been published (Slobodník 2007, 2008, Slobodník et al. 2009); this article represents the continuation of this effort. Results and discussion In 2009 a total of 49,253 birds were ringed, of which 1,222 individuals of birds of prey and owls equating to 2.5% of all ringed birds. Birds from 182 species were ringed, which represents the highest number of ringed species so far. 26 species of birds of prey and owls were ringed, which equates to 14.3% of all recorded species. The nestlings of raptors and owls represent a significantly high proportion of ringed chicks. In 2009 in total 4,616 nestlings were ringed, of which 975 birds of prey and owls, which comprise approximately 21%. In 2009, 18 species of raptors and eight species of owls were ringed from the total of 1,222 individuals (Tab. 1), which is the highest number of individuals ringed within a calendar year in the history of the Slovakia Bird Ringing Centre. From this number, 976 individuals were nestlings, equating to 80%. In 2009 the highest number of individuals were ringed from the following five species: Falco tinnunculus, Strix uralensis, Aquila pomarina, Buteo buteo and Asio otus. The number of ringed individuals from the first 4 above species exceeded 100. The number of birds of prey in 2009 substantially exceeded the number of the ringed owls. There were 856 individuals of raptors and 366 individuals of owls ringed. Regarding ringed birds of prey, the nestlings comprised of 84% (719 ind.) and owls 70% (257 ind.). This difference is much lower than it was in previous years. The summary of ringing activities is shown on Tab. 2. The total amount of the ringed birds of prey and owls and its nestlings, compared to the results from the period of , are the highest so far. In 2009 more than 500 recoveries of all bird species were collected. The majority of them comes from Hungary, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Austria and France. The 109
2 Slobodník V & Slobodník R: The summary of ringing of birds of prey and owls in Slovakia in 2009 data about swans and seagulls have been dominating (rings are easy to read with a monocular), but also data about several birds of prey and owls ringed abroad and recovered in Slovakia were registered (Tab. 3). The same can be noted regarding birds of prey and owls ringed in Slovakia and recovered abroad (Tab. 4). Several records of birds of prey and owls ringed and recovered in Slovakia were registered.
