2 DAY 1 Friday, February 17, 2017 AFTERNOON Arrive on Fogo Island and let the island start to reveal itself on the 30-minute drive through outport communities as you make your way off to your Valentine s Day refuge, Fogo Island Inn. Take time to make time for exploration of the natural beauty found around every bend. Check into Fogo Island Inn, a traditional yet contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture and design. The Inn has been recently named to Condé Nast Traveller s Gold Standard List 2016: the world s best hotels from coast to country chosen by the editors of Condé Nast Traveller. Our welcoming staff will escort you to your suite where additional comforts of your choosing await: A bottle of wine, local and natural bath products, candles and sweet treats. 5:30 pm Even though it will be difficult to leave your suite with sumptuous, soulful furnishings and floor to ceiling windows looking onto the North Atlantic, do tear yourself away to join us in the lounge for cocktail hour with Dr. Bill Montevecchi in anticipation of the morning birding excursion. Sip on a hot toddy, or a hot chocolate, while learning about the seabirds that spend their winter vacations around Fogo Island. Enjoy our Love (the) Birds inspired cocktails and be connected with other guests in the lounge or cozy up to a woodburning fire.

3 6 pm Before dinner join Dr. Bill Montevecchi in the cinema. Give yourself over to the powerful BBC/National Geographic documentary People of the Sea, detailing the collapse of the cod fishery, with stunning images of birds and whales. Created by renowned filmmakers Hugh Miles and Patrick Morris, People of the Sea unearths archival footage and historical photography in an exploration of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and their intertwined relationship to the sea. The film s incomparable cinematography is sure to inspire as you are presented with a glimpse of the people and marine life that call our rugged coastlines home. 7 pm Supper prepared by Fogo Island Inn s Kitchen Collective in our Dining Room; named one of Canada s 100 Best Restaurants, LATE EVENING Local musical entertainment in the lounge.

4 DAY 2 Saturday, February 18, 2017 Daybreak Morning Greet the sun as she rises from the ocean and find a handmade wooden daybreak basket outside your door filled with coffee, tea and fresh pastries. Breakfast is served at Fogo Island Inn. 10 am Depart the Inn for a coastal tour. If you love (the) birds or just love being outside, join us for a morning of bird watching with Dr. Bill Montevecchi as we visit sites at Tilting, Joe Batt s Arm, Barr d Islands, Shoal Bay, Fogo and Seldom. Possible winter sightings include - Loons, Purple Sandpipers, Iceland and Glaucous Gulls, Dovekies, Murres, Ptarmigan, Common and King Eiders, White-winged Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, Goldeneye, Mergansers, Bald Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk, Crows and Ravens, Grey Jays, Black-capped and Boreal Chickadees, Golden-crowned Kinglet, European Starling, Bohemian Waxwing, Snow Bunting, Red and White-winged Crossbill, Purple Finch, Evening Grosbeak and House Sparrow. And on the mammalian side seals, caribou, fox and coyote. The exploration begins with a coastal tour along Joe Batt s Arm and Tilting. From there, we will venture along the coasts at Barr d Islands, Shoal Bay and around the Burnt Island Lighthouse in Seldom-Come-By. We will warm up with a cup of hot cocoa at the Funk Island Great Auk Exhibition on the wharf at the Marine Interpretation Centre in Seldom-Come By, as Dr. Bill Montevecchi continues his informative talk on the birds of Funk Island, including the world s largest murre colony and the cemetery of the extinct Great Auk. Dinner (Lunch) Lunch at your leisure in the Dining Room

5 2 pm After dinner (lunch) join Dr. Bill Montevecchi on an afternoon adventure by snowmobile. Take the short car ride to the trail head in Joe Batt s Arm, where your snowmobile guide will whisk you away to see the bronze statue of the Great Auk, a sculpture erected in honour of the now extinct flightless bird. Glide across the crisp, frozen snow, feeling the brilliance of the sun on your face as frost nips at your nose. Beyond the Great Auk, visit the landmark known as Round Head a very significant part of our Island s history, an inshore fishery that is a haven for local bird hunters. 5 pm Return to the Inn. Warm up in the comfort of your suite, enjoy a film in our Cinema, or make your way to our rooftop hot tubs and wood-fired saunas for a relaxing interlude before supper. EVENING Feast on a three-course Valentine s Day menu in our award-winning Dining Room. Enjoy our take on new Newfoundland cuisine, featuring locally sourced produce, fish and game while the waves of the Atlantic crash onto the undisturbed shoreline just beyond your table setting. After supper (dinner), join us in the lounge for an intriguing talk about the power of seabird bonds and what they can tell us about the ocean environment around us.
