New Caledonia bird report, August 2015 Tommy P. Pedersen tommypepe63(at)gmail.com This report will try to add some up-to-date notes to the older trip reports available online. My wife and I did a 14-day casual drive around the southern half of Grande Terre (big island) as well as a day-trip to Ouvea and an overnight trip to Lifou (ferry out, airplane back). All endemics seen, all photographed except New Caledonia Grassbird. All coordinates are given in a form that can be copied and then pasted directly into the Search field in Google Earth. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to me. I can also be contacted via my UAE site Most of my New Caledonia photos, all precisely geotagged, can be found here: I created an open Facebook group for a discussion on the ID of the Swiftlets of New Caledonia. This is because the common (mis?)conception is that Glossy Swiftlet is the abundant species here, and White-rumped Swiftlet the tricky one to find. I found it to be quite the opposite. The group can be found here: I used trip-reports from: 2006 Dave Sargeant; Tropical Birding; Sicklebill; I also used info from ebird: Local websites and contacts I found useful: New Caledonia endemics: Loyalty Island info: Air Caledonie: Betico ferry: Ouvea car rental was Loc Ouvea; ouvealok@gmail.com - Tel/ Fax: , GSM: They respobded in English via and was much more organized than the agency on Lifou. Ouvea Parakeet guide company was Asbo Direction: asbo.direction(at)gmail.com, our guide was Jean-Baptiste Mr Faisen runs Asbo, but is not a guide. He can be reached on phone (+687) You will have to drive from the airport to Jean-Baptistes home, an easy 30 min drive to coordinates: , Lifou rental car: Loca V in Wé Phone/fax: , Phone:

Contact: Mme Sutijem SOETIKNON Unable to get an reply from any agency on Lifou, but I called Mme Soetiknon frm my phone in Dubai and she gave us her last car. Oasis de Kiamu Hotel on Lifou: Parc les Grandes Fougeres: Hotel Banu in La Foa: Jean-Marc Meriot: jean-marc.meriot(at)province-sud.nc Jean-Marc is THE guide for Crow Honeyeater. Logistics: We rented a Peugeot 207 for 14 days from Europcar for a total price of Euro 650 This was the only agency I could find that had a Garmin SatNav GPS unit for rent. I strongly reccomend Pocket Earth for iphone for navigation on New Caledonia. The Garmin was OK for general use, but routinely asked us to turn right when we should go straight through roundabouts, and was missing a few roads (old database). Pocket Earth: I have investigated various offline maps for the iphone, and found Pocket Earth to be the most accurate. Traditional house on Ouvea

Site-notes in the order we visited them: Tontouta Airport: Small airport, but far from Noumea. Easy drive to Noumea even late in the evening. Petrol stations close to the airport. Noumea: Quite busy city but easy to navigate with the help of my iphone. We stayed at Le Parc hotel (ok location, great breakfast) and Hotel Beaurivage (great location, did not try the breakfast). Mont Koghi: A delighful mountain inn, run by a French chap that has some amazing photos of Horned Parakeet. The parakeet(s) will come in almost daily to feed in the big tree just outside. We did not stay overnight, but the small huts looked adequate. They are not open for breakfast (unless you stay here I suppose), but lunch is served from 11:30 am onwards. The food was quite good. You will have to pay a modest fee at the inn to be allowed to walk the forest tracks. We walked the track towards the waterfall, as well as approximately two kilometres along the opposite trail. We did not see the Horned Parakeet at the inn despite an hours wait in the afternoon, but had a small flock flying overhead as we walked back from the waterfall. Most New Caledonia endemics can be seen here with ease.

Parc de la Rivière Bleue: Very easy to find, contrary to some trip reports. The road to Yate was signposted. You turn off at a big sign pointing you to the park, at , You stop and pay the modest entry fee at , Coconut Lorikeet is common here (and in the park), but both Parakeets have been recorded here, with luck. We rented bikes at the bridge at , and biked to the Grand Kaori. I would highly recommend to hire Jean-Marc (see above for contact details) from 7am to afternoon. He's fee (payable at the main entrance office at the end of your day) was a reasonable XPF 2,000 pr hour, and he works for the park. The fee goes to the park, and not to him. Jean-Marc knows this place like the back of his hand, researching the Kagu population, and is THE expert on where to find the elusive Crow Honeyeater, New Caledonian Parakeet and Horned Parakeet. Ouvea: We took the 09:10 flight out from Magenta Airport. Parking at the airport is chaotic, but possible along the main road. The return flight was at 19:00, but was changed to 18:30 a week before departure via an notification. Calling them on the phone to confirm is...time consuming. We had a car waiting for us at Ouvea Airport, all arranged via . A lady came from Lok Ouvea. She was not easy to find, as she did not carry a sign, but she was waiting for us. Mr Faisen from Asbo Direction was not present, despite confirming by and me calling him from Dubai to his mobile phone. He had forgotten all about us and later was very apologetic. We found the main office, a small unmarked house in Banout. The chap there called the guide, Jean-Baptiste who luckily said he was free, and able to guide us. The Ouvea Parakeets are only found on private tribal ground in the far north of the island. We were told to drive to his straw house and he would be waiting for us. We did. He was. You drive north to , Jean-Baptiste was waiting for us on the gravel road. He is a very nice chap, but speaks only French. Not a word of English. He took us to a private track that ends on a beach. In ebird, I named this track: Ouvea--Teouta track. It's mid-point is located at , As this is private land, I strongly suggest you go with a guide and NOT alone. We met several islanders on this track, all carrying machetes. I'm not saying this is unsafe; quite the contrary. As long as you are not trespassing ;-) The Ouvea Parakeet is virtually guaranteed here, and Jean-Baptiste even showed us an active nesting hole towards the end of our trip. Humpback Whales were seen close to shore. We also visited a sinkhole with Jean-Baptiste, complete with green turtles, at GPS position , After bidding him goodbye, we spent the rest of the day driving to the southern tip of the island in the hope of seeing some seabirds. None seen. Jean-Baptiste on Ouvea

La Foa: We were stuck in La Foa from 11am to 5pm due to a mining-truckers strike, leading to the miners barring every major road in the entire country with their big trucks. This prevented us from visiting the far north, as we were stuck in Bourail for 4 nights. La Foua is a pleasant place to get stuck, with a decent hotel with good food. We explored the 3 ponds just outside town, as well as the immediate area to the northeast. Red-throated Parrotfinch seemed quite common in the area, with a total of nine birds seen at , and , The Swiftlets photographed all appear to be White-rumped Swiftlets. We stayed 4 night at the superb Beticure Parc Lodge at , Booked via Booking.com Red-throated Parrotfinch seen every morning and afternoon in the lodge grounds. Parc les Grandes Fougeres: Our main aim here was to look for New Caledonia Thicketbird (New Caledonia Grassbird). We did not walk the track at Refugio de Farino, starting at , We spent two half-days at the main national park, where you pay a modest entry fee at a small gate at position , The main track that descends northwestwards to , and beyond. We walked this track, as well as the access road to the park up to the main gate. Not even a single whiff of a Grassbird. Playback was used a few times, but no success. Cloven-feathered Dove was heard frequently, but only one bird seen deep in the forest as it flew away. We also checked the tall grass along Route Menard, at , It's seems like very good Grassbird habitat, but difficult to access due to an old overgrown fence. Early morning might prove fruitful here, if you can get inside the grassy bit. PePe's Grassbird site: Since we were stuck in the Bourail area for 4 nights, at the lovely Beticure Lodge, we went exploring. Along a deeply rutted dirt road, at position , we had a splendid New Caledonia Thicketbird (= Grassbird) flying across the road. The habitat here is prime, and this might prove to be a new, easy location for this much sought-after species. It is only 280 meters above sea level, and not 'above 400 m' as mentioned being the best altitude for the Grassbirds. We were in a hurry, and did not explore this area and road further for more Grassbirds.

Noumea to Lifou ferry: We took the Betico high-speed ferry from Noumea to Lifou, leaving Noumea at 7am. The ferry leaves from , The crossing took 5 hours and it stopped at Lifou before continuing to Mare. Moderate swell. The seats in the VIP section is very comfortable, with fewer people around. To get access to the Upper Deck, you will need at least a Comfort-class ticket, and not Eco-class. The only spot to watch for seabirds is the upper rear deck. Telescope not possible due speed of boat and rocky motion. My favourite spot was at the longest red arrow, because I was sheltered from the wind. The first Humpback Whales were seen at , The first seabirds started showing up at , , and continued all the way to Lifou. Only Tahiti Petrels and Red-footed Booby were seen, despite intense search. Lifou: We had contacted Loca V by phone, and was promised the last car, a Peugeout of some sort. Once we debarked the ferry, nobody was waiting for us. I eventually found a chap inside a truck with a Loca V sticker on the door. He was busy with another client, but I waited for him to finish. He did know about me, but had no car, due to an acute lack of petrol on the island. So I got his 4x4 Nissan diesel truck instead, with half a tank of diesel. Told to deliver it at the airport the next day, and they would charge me for the fuel used. It worked out fine. Apparently petrol/diesel on Lifou is often a problem, and other birders have used bikes when cars were unavailable, so plan ahead. We stayed overnight at Oasis de Kiamu in a nice bungalow. Decent food in the restaurant, and Glossy Swiftlet at the back door (much less common than White-rumped Swiftlets in New Caledonia, contrary to popular belief). The first afternoon we drove along the southern half of the island, with nothing worth mentioning. The next morning, at dawn, I parked the truck at Hapetra forest road, at , and walked the first side-road going south. It soon ended. Then I continued along the main gravel road for an hour. I eventually found and photographed two Large Lifou White-eyes at position ,

This was not an easy bird to find, and none were singing, and my two birds were silent. After breakfast we packed up and drove slowly to the northern section, to Notre Dame de Lourdes at position , We were searching from Blue-faced Parrotfinch, but none seen. This is apparently a rather rare bird on Lifou. Kind regards, Tommy and Maja P. Pedersen tommypepe63(at)gmail.com Author and wife on Mount Koghi
