Read a full report by Chris Barnes Pages 2 & 3 Moore Park lagoon The June outing gave us wonderful views of Rufous Night-herons. Read the full report by Tina Dotto Page 4 Upcoming events Two day trips and the September campout map and information Page 5 Black-necked Stork sightings around Bundaberg Black-necked Storks are regularly seen around the Port area. Usually a single bird or a pair is all we see. Eric Zillmann has seen them breeding along the Burnett River and in the Wallaville area. They nest on an exposed large flat stick platform in a dead or an alive tree. Photo Chris Barnes The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It is the tallest flying bird found in South America and lives in large groups near rivers and ponds. 2 Trip report Goodnight Scrub Leader Chris Barnes Wedge-tailed Eagle by Chris Barnes There were 16 present on the outing and the weather was great. We stopped briefly at the water storage ponds by the road (near the Mystery Craters) and picked up jacanas with immature birds, Cotton Pygmy Teal and a huge White Bellied Sea-eagle which flew over & landed conveniently on a dead tree so we could scope it. The drive through the Goodnight Scrub was very nice. On the ridge entering the scrub we stopped for the view. Two Wedge-tailed Eagles were seen very distant before one came closer with a minimum of effort. As we were admiring them, a third bird flew past at eye level absolutely spectacular! A Dusky Woodswallow took the opportunity to show off by harassing one of these giants. entertained as the birds were far from vocal and it was generally very quiet. Brown Goshawk & Brown Falcons were around but there was no sign of the Regent Bowerbirds. Eric gave his show & tell at the patch of Ringy Rosewood (Acacia rhodoxylon) which is always of interest. We had a look at Paradise Dam; something of an eyesore for those of us who knew the scrub it drowned (and the camping area we loved). We had lunch down a shady side track away from that memory and were entertained by whistlers, shrike-thrushes, honeyeaters and treecreepers while we had bird call.it was a pleasant end to the outing. Chris Barnes We made intermittent stops at any sign of activity where there were a few birds along the road but Rose Robins were about the most interesting find. Butterflies 2

4 Trip report The Lagoon, Moore Park Leader Tina Dotto Moo re Park, a sleepy little town about 20 km north of Bundaberg, has a wide variety of birding habitats in its area. Sunday, 28 th June 2009, Bundyboc members made a visit to The Lagoon, off Egret Lane, which is the centre of a small community of homes. This area, surprisingly, retains its flora and fauna, without too much destruction. The Lagoon itself was quite full after recent rains, yet the water birds stayed put. The Pacific Black Duck, Grey Teal, Chestnut Teal, Australasian Grebe, and the Great and Intermediate Egrets were present as always. A small colony of about six Rufous Night Herons with two juveniles could be seen easily from the boardwalk that traverses the Lagoon. Brown Honeyeaters were in nesting mode and we had great close-up views of both the male and female Leaden Flycatcher. The complete circuit of the Lagoon is dominated with Eucalypts, Burdekin Plum, Livistona Palm, Melaleuca, Casuarina, Lantana, Water Reeds and much more a great habitat that delivered about 40 species in all. Later we surveyed the other lagoon near the caravan parkand here we found a huge flock of Plumed Whistling Duck. Royal Spoonbill were also present. Our next diversion was onto the FairydaleRoad/HillsRoad/Gooburrum Road/Tantitha Road, on our way back to Bundaberg. This rural area always surprises with the variety of bird species to be seen. We spotted a flock of Topknot Pigeons, quite a few finches,(double-barred and Chestnutbreasted) near an irrigation channel, and a cacophony of Figbirds, Friarbirds and Spangled Drongos all along the way. Our outing ended by midday at the Botanic Gardens where we had lunch and conducted Bird Call, which resulted in our seeing 70 species on the day. 5 For your diary. September Campout at Wolca Reserve Mt Perry. Leader Carl Moller th July outing to Sharon Gorge & Meadowvale Leader Edwin Faint Meet 7am North State Public School carpark 30 th August outing to Smith s Crossing & Bucca Road Leader Chris Barnes Meet 7am North State Public School carpark The club has received permission to camp at Wolca Reserve. There are showers and toilets. We will go up the range into the new 5 Bania National Park. Please be prepared to car share with 4WDs.

6 BMRG gives $3000 for survey work Thanks to the hard work surveying shorebirds by members of our club we have received $3000 from the Burnett Mary Regional Group. The money will be spent entirely on the purchase of a complete set of the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds costing $2995 from Andrew Isles. The books will be donated to Bundaberg Library and remain in the reference section. Most of the survey work was done by Chris Barnes with help from Bill and Jack Moorhead, Nev Capell, Carl Moller and Trevor Quested. Sue Sargent accompanied the bird watchers and logged all the sightings and became an accomplished birder along the way. Many thanks to all who took part in the survey which still continues. The particular area known as the Bundaberg Port Swamp where the waders gathered in numbers still has an uncertain future. The ownership of the Port has changed. We all hope this wetlands area is kept untouched in the future and is not developed. Sue Sargent Coastal & Marine Coordinator (Coastcare) Burnett Mary Regional Group Double Banded Plovers The Double-banded Plover breeds in New Zealand and some of the population visits Eastern Australia in the non-breeding season. Most birds arrive from January- February and depart June July though some have been recorded as late as November. Estuarine mudflats and ocean beaches are where the bird usually lives but high tide roosts can include ploughed fields and paddocks. A small number go inland to freshwater and salt lakes. Australia is the main wintering ground for this bird. Around Bundaberg, mostly on Dr Mays Island, we see birds with maximum numbers of around 30 for the entire area. Photo by Chris Barnes
