Menorca 13 th -27 th October 2017 Trip Report By Bob Shiret S`Albufera Nature Reserve Introduction This was our first visit to Menorca, the holiday was booked through Thomsons and cost around 870 each which included transfers and all inclusive at the hotel Insotel Punta Prima in the south east of the island. The hotel was fine but bear in mind that the hotel is family oriented so there are many children in the well planned accommodation, which is all apartments. Our plan was to hire a car for the duration but unfortunately our (old) phone was unable to get any signal, this meant a change of plan so we decided to use a combination of local buses and taxis and for the most part this worked fine. Buses ran every hour from Punta Prima to the capital Mahon and from there we used bus and taxi to get around the island, interestingly the hire car would have cost 350 euros plus petrol and total bus and taxi cost was around 250 euros, but of course you do not have the flexibility of your own car. The weather for the trip was generally good, my son and his family were in the pool most days, we had one very wet day, one cloudy day and the rest was sunshine in the mid seventies.
Birdwatching Sites Punta Prima The resort where we were based has a small sandy beach and a long rocky foreshore which backed onto a large expanse of shrub and low trees, I was amazed on one day of the trip to see an Osprey hovering over the shallows right in front of our hotel and thirteen seconds later a Booted Eagle (lifer) was hovering over the rocks in the same location. Osprey in front of the hotel Booted Eagle, light morph (picture taken 13 secs after Osprey)
On our first night in the hotel apartment there was a Scops Owl calling from a palm tree immediately in front of our door for ten minutes, not to be heard again. In the village were seen a Hoopoe and a Red-breasted Flycatcher in gardens. On the rocky seashore Audouin`s Gulls were seen daily along with Yellow-legged and Herring. Audouin`s Gull A pair of Thekla Lark were here as well as many Black Redstarts in our second week. Thekla Lark
Black Redstart Other birds see in the Punta Prima area were: Shag, Wheatear, Linnet, Starling flock, House Martin, Kestrel, Blue Rock Thrush, Stonechat, Rock Dove, House Sparrow, Sardinian Warbler, Chiffchaf, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Collard Dove, Wood Pigeon. Son Bou This was the only disappointing location of our trip, the marsh behind the beach which stretched for two kilometres had no viewing access and it was very hard walking in the soft sand on the footpath. Another minus was that the whole beach was nudist, nearly all of whom were men who seemed keen to parade themselves to all, draw your own conclusions! The only birds of note here were a distant Marsh Harrier and a pair of Grey Wagtails on the marsh. Cala Galdana We were hoping to see Griffon Vultures and Booted Eagles here and were not disappointed. Booted Eagle (dark morph)
Griffon Vultures In total over ten vultures (lifer) and more than fifteen eagles were seen exiting the Algender Gorge, also seen were Spotted Flycatcher, Cetti`s Warbler, Raven and Chuckar. To access the gorge walk out of Cala Galadana pass the bus stop and car park, keep going and then take the lower path in the gorge When we walked on a cliff walk overlooking the bay a Booted Eagle flew below us just a few metres away. Booted Eagle
S`Albufera This is probably the most famous reserve in Menorca and is about fifteen minutes drive from Mahon. On the approach road is an information centre where you can obtain maps which cover this site and the area of es Grau which is on the coast. The paths generally take you along high paths to the hides, the birds are quite a long way away so a scope would be ideal. Birds seen here were Marbled Duck, Gadwall, Mallard, Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Shoveler, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Heron, Little Egret, Coot, Moorhen, Red Kite, Sardinian Warbler and Cormorant. Sardinian Warbler Marbled Duck and Coot
es GRAU This is a pretty village on the coast that has a variety of habitats including a sandy beach, coastal cliff walks, scrub, woods and overlooks the large lake of S`Albufera. We were lucky enough to have great views of an Osprey diving for fish in the lake. In the woods behind the beach were Firecrest, Siskin, Goldcrest, Meadow Pipit and Blackcap, on the beach before tourists arrived were a Sanderling and Ringed Plover. Sanderling
Other Locations On a bus trip to Ciutadella two flocks of Cattle Egrets were seen and in the town itself we were surprised to see a Blue Rock Thrush on a roof. Butterflies Blue Rock Thrush We were pleasantly surprised by the number of butterfly species to be seen at this time of year and included : Speckled Wood (P.a. argeria), Bath White, Small Heath, Clouded Yellow, Small Copper, Wall Brown (L.m.paramegera), Lang`s Short-tailed Blue, Cleopatra, Painted Lady, Common Blue, Swallowtail, Red Admiral. Wall Brown
Speckled Wood Bath White Lang`s Short-tailed Blue
Other Wildlife A number of Hummingbird Hawkmoths were seen and one actually came into our apartment, much to the enjoyment of the grandchildren. Three Hermann`s Tortoise and a Praying Mantis were seen during walks on a track that runs behind the hotel complex at the top of the hill through the scrub. Hermann`s Tortoise Praying Mantis
On the edge of some reeds on the lake at es Grau was this superb Great Orb Spider,it was about five inches long and from any distance it was very difficult to see, i`m not usually keen on spiders but this was one of the animal highlights of the trip. Great Orb Spider
A few lizards were seen on our walks and this was the most common, interestingly it`s called the Moroccan Rock Lizard although it only occurs in Menorca! Summary Moroccan Rock Lizard We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Menorca, relatively quiet and unspoilt and for late October some nice birds to connect with. Our son and his family including two young children enjoyed the holiday, them by/in the pool and us out and about. Since returning we have booked up next year to return, this time to Cala Galdana. One point of note in the two weeks we were no shotgun cartridges were seen, unlike some other med islands.
