DAY 1 THURSDAY JUNE 2 ND 2016 MALAGA AIRPORT TRANSFER TO GAUCIN WITH STOPS AT CASARES AND SIERRA CRESTELLINA It was changeover day today, I took my group back to Malaga Airport and collected Ann and Bob who are staying with us for a week for birding and butterfly watching... So it was goodbye to Tony, Val and Judith we had has a great week with them, lots of laughs, some super birding and a host of butterflies. We arrived at the airport on time and dropped Judith off for her flight home. Tony and Val were travelling on to Granada so I took them to Malaga bus station. I had a couple of hours to kill so I went to the east side of the Guadalhorce Nature Reserve where I sat by the car and watched Kentish Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Black-winged Stilts and Monk Parakeets. Kentish Plover taken at the Guadalhorce Ann and Bob arrived on time at 1:40pm, we logged Pallid Swift as we left the terminal building and we were very quickly on the way out of the airport. We drove to Casares where we stopped to watch Griffon Vultures, we also saw Sardinian Warbler and Common Kestrel. At Sierra Crestellina there was plenty more Griffon Vultures on the wing and we were lucky enough to see a pair of Bonelli's Eagles drifting about with the vultures, we saw them soar down to a perch on the mountainside. Other birds seen were Common Stonechat and Melodious Warbler. From a mirador near Gaucin we looked over the village, a Eurasian Sparrowhawk circled above it with dozens of both Common and Pallid Swifts.
As we showed Ann and Bob their new home for the week we noted, from the top terrace, a Booted Eagle circling over us, a nice welcome for our new guests. DAY 2 FRIDAY JUNE 3 RD 2016 SAN PABLO TRACKS MARCHENILLA TRACK CASTILLO DE CASTELLAR SAN ENRIQUE WOODS Our first full day was a relaxed affair which is probably going to be the theme of the entire tour, we had excellent weather, sunshine with a lovely breeze all day. We set out at 9am and headed down towards San Pablo turning off the main road onto a farm track about 8km from Gaucin. We stopped just passed a stream and got out for our first scan. Open meadows dominated the hilly landscape with scrub and bushes along the stream, ideal habitat for shrikes, finches, stonechats and the dreaded Corn Bunting. We saw all of those in a matter of minutes, several Blackcaps were singing too and a single Common Nightingale was very close but failed to show. Then a couple of Sardinian Warblers came in to view and two Turtle Doves turred from the power lines, both Ann and Bob were very pleased to see them in the scope. A few kilometers down the track we stopped to look at Cirl Bunting and at a bridge we searched for Olivaceous Warbler, after a little while we saw one flitting around in the eucalyptus trees. Good views of Spotted Flycatchers were also had and both Cetti s Warbler and Common Nightingale sang from deep in the scrub. The Track to Marchenilla was as good as ever, European Bee-eaters were everywhere as were Melodious Warblers, Sardinian Warblers, Common Whitethroat, Corn Buntings, Stonechats, Linnets and Goldfinches. The local speciality, RUFOUS BUSH ROBIN, was singing when we arrived but showed only briefly. We also logged Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard and Common Kestrel. On another track that leads you to Jimena from Marchenilla we sat and ate our picnic lunch. Next to our picnic was a ford over a section of the Hozgargante River where we saw Grey Wagtail, Common Kingfisher and Golden Oriole. Next we drove to the Castillo de Castellar, along the way we stopped near the Presa de Guadarraque to watch both Monarch and Two-tailed Pasha butterflies, both of these magnificent beasts performed well for my guests. At the Castillo (castle) we sat for a while watching Lesser
Kestrels visiting their nest-holes and Crag Martins feeding young. Overhead we noted Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle and Griffon Vulture whilst small flocks of Common Swifts zoomed around us. Lastly we visited the White Poplar woods at San Enrique which failed to produce anything other than Wood Pigeon, Serin, Goldfinch and at the river we added Little Ringed Plover. More butterflies were added to our list, more Monarchs were recorded as well as Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown and Small Blue. We left the wood around 4pm and drove back to Gaucin, it had been a great first day, I think the show of wild flowers had impressed my guests more than the birds today, but both were superb to see. DAY 3 SATURDAY JUNE 4 TH 2016 TARIFA LOS LANCES BEACH -LA JANDA VEJER BARBATE MARSHES This was our first trip to the coast on a lovely sunny day, a cooling wind kept the temperature down to the lower 20 s. We drove to the coast via Jimena de la Frontera noting Little Owl, Common Buzzard, Black Kite, Booted Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, lots of Corn Buntings and White Storks along the way. It was quite breezy at Los Lances Beach and there were people walking on the beach which had disturbed the roosting gulls and waders. We only saw Kentish Plover (a family party) and Yellow-legged Gulls. On the grassy margin behind the beach we found Crested and Short-toed Larks and a few Goldfinches but that was all. La Janda was the same, this transitional period between breeding and reverse migration is the quietest time for this area. The rice fields are just being flooded so many Little & Cattle Egrets were feeding there with dozens of Glossy Ibis and a few Black-winged Stilts. Along the main track we found Calandra Lark, Zitting Cisticola, Crested Lark, Stonechat and the inevitable Corn Bunting. The best birding was along the track where the Egret breeding colony is housed, what a smell, also very noisy but colourful, an enjoyable experience. Most Cattle Egret nests now have large chicks, I guess there are between nests and also 50+ Glossy Ibis and a couple of dozen Night Herons. We ate our lunch whilst watching Red-rumped Swallows and the Egret colony, a few butterflies were feeding on the nearby plants, Small White, Clouded Yellow, Small Copper and Meadow Brown.
From La Janda we drove to Vejer to look at the Bald Ibis colony, they are doing well with two or three chicks in every nest, wonderful to see. Another Cattle Egret breeding colony nearby offers very close views of the nesting birds. Lots of Jackdaws also breed on the cliffs with the Ibis and many Feral Pigeons. Barbate Marshes must be the best place to watch Collared Pratincoles in the whole of Andalucia, at least 100 pairs are breeding there and many of them perch on the track right next to the van. We noted fledged chicks on the track and the Stone Curlews seem to have also done well, both pairs have at least one chick and probably two. Kentish Plover, Yellow Wagtail and Short-toed Lark were all looking after fledged chicks and Little Terns fed in the large lagoons, this must be my first visit without a sighting of Spoonbill this year and flamingos and avocets have been absent for a while. I did also note some distant Sanderling, Dunlin and Curlew Sandpiper but they were in very small numbers. We left the marshes after having great views of Iberian Yellow Wagtail and drove to the mirador de estrecho the view point of the Gibraltar Strait. The light was marvellous and the air was clear giving us wonderful views of Morocco. Nothing of note was sighted as we drove back to Gaucin, the scenery was just magical in the afternoon light. DAY 4 SUNDAY JUNE 5 TH 2016 ENCINAS BORRACHAS TRACK LAGUNA FUENTE DE PIEDRA We had a terrific morning in glorious sunshine and very warm temperatures, the light was simply fantastic, so clear, everything looked so vibrant and colourful. It wasn t just the bird life that made our morning walk so wonderful but also the stunning array of wild flowers, the sheer number of butterflies and the breath-taking scenery. We arrived a little after 9am, having stopped to watch Rock Buntings on a roadside wall. It was already 20C but a nice breeze made it feel cooler, I love this walk it is one of my all-time favourites. A number habitats combine to give an overall diverse environment supporting a collection of birds that would be difficult to find elsewhere in such a small area. You have high limestone cliff faces and mountain peaks, sloping rocky scree, open grassland, open bushy scrub, ponds, heathland, cork woods and banks of wild flowers. We were amazed at the number of butterflies on the wing and it just got better as the air warmed up, last week I was complaining about the lack of butterflies, I m not now. We quickly identified;
Clouded Yellow, Pale Clouded Yellow, Meadow Brown, Sage Skipper, Marbled White, Spanish Gatekeeper, Brown Argus and Small Copper. Our first scan for birds was a little unsuccessful, only Corn Bunting, Stonechat and Goldfinch. But as we moved along the track more began to appear. First we found Rock Sparrow then a Black Redstart, both were very high up on the cliffs. Next we found Spanish Ibex sitting up there and a great find was a male COMMON ROCK THRUSH. This bird was singing and displaying, performing very well for us. Next a Black-eared Wheatear sang close by giving great views, Thekla Lark followed and we found Iberian Shrike, the first one seen here for a while, I thought that they may have left. A Black Wheatear was next on the list, it too performed song-flights for us. We then found Red Deer on the peaks and a small pond full of tiny, baby Natterjack Toads. A Dartford Warbler find was of an amazingly showy male, perched within a few meters and singing to us, the same happened with a Woodlark. More butterflies were found; The Hermit, Grayling, Scarce Swallowtail, Spanish Fritillary and Knapweed Fritillary. As we entered the cork woods we heard Orphean Warbler but couldn t locate it, we had better luck with Subalpine Warbler and a number of Bonelli s Warblers. Two Hawfinches flew over us and a Common Cuckoo called from way down the valley. Our return journey was equally as good, we found an Orphean Warbler in the open scrub, a beautiful male singing, a Spectacled Warbler briefly perched in the same bush. We scoped Blue Rock Thrush, Common Kestrel and several Griffon Vultures. A little hot and mildly exhausted we sat by the car and ate our lunch, we had been on our feet for nearly four hours. A couple more butterflies went on the list with Dusky Heath and Silver-studded Blue. For the afternoon we drove to Fuente de Piedra, we knew that this huge lagoon was virtually dry but a couple of pools near the visitor s centre still held some water. The shallow pool along the entranceway was almost gone, but it still held lots of Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Black-headed Gulls a few Gull-billed Terns and a single Northern Lapwing. Two other bonus birds appeared whilst we were there, first a couple of Whiskered Tern came in and fed over the water and a great surprise was a WATER RAIL, it walked right across the road heading away from the pool into some thick scrub, amazing! The pool behind the centre was still good and still full of birds, we added 10 or more species to our list including; White-headed Duck, Black-necked Grebe, Red-crested Pochard and several other species. The huge lagoon itself held about 1000 Greater Flamingos, they stood or fed, closely
packed together in an ankle deep pool on one side, a sorry site as none of these birds would breed this year. We finished our visit around 4pm and headed off back to Gaucin, the top temperature was 31C, I think summer has finally arrived. DAY 5 MONDAY JUNE 6 TH 2016 RONDA ALL MORNING - CUEVA DE GATO AND ESTACION DE CORTES IN THE AFTERNOON Another brilliant sunny day a little hotter with an average temperature of 28C. Not much birding today we had a 'tourist's' morning in Ronda and a leisurely afternoon at the river... Our guests Ann & Bob spent the morning in Ronda with Dawn my wife, they walked the tourist trails whilst Dawn went spending my money! I dropped them off at 9:30am and went off birding by myself. I took a track near Benaojan where I had never been before, it was wonderful quiet lane, no traffic and tons of birds. Many Nightingales were singing along with Cetti's Warbler, Golden Oriole, Blackcap and Turtle Dove, but the first bird I encountered was a Wryneck! I watched this bird for a few minutes and after a while it flew up to a nest hole and just sat there looking out at me from the entrance! The Wryneck was a great find and an enjoyable watch.
I walked further along the lane which followed the course of a babbling brook, I was hoping for a Dipper sighting but all I got was Grey Wagtail and a few signs of Dipper presence. A Southern Water Vole was a nice sighting, they are much bigger than the species found in the UK. The 'Beautiful Demoiselle' Sitting on the bank of a stream can be very rewarding, no traffic, no back-ground noise just birds and wildlife, perfect. I added Melodious Warbler, lots of common species such as Goldfinch, Serin, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Wren, Blue and Great Tits, House Sparrow, Blackbirds etc. Brimstone Butterfly At 1pm I collected my guests and Dawn, my wallet was safe she couldn't find any new clothes to buy, phew! I took them back to the Wryneck nest site and whilst we ate our picnic lunch we watched a pair of Wrynecks!
Watching Grey Wagtails and Alpine Swifts at Cueva de Gato Then we drove the short distance to Cueva de Gato, a popular scenic site, where about fifty pairs of Alpine Swifts breed and a few pairsof Crag Martins. We watched the swirling mass of Alpine Swifts above us and Grey Wagtails on the river. Spotted Flycatcher Our last bit birding was along the Guadiaro river at Estacion Cortes where we got good views of Common Nightingale, it was one of about 6 that were singing in the 200 meters that we walked along. Woodchat Shrike, Stonechat, Red-rumped Swallow and Corn Bunting were added to the day last.
We drove home about 5pm and at 7:30pm we went out for dinner to a restaurant in Gaucin, it was a lovely warm evening we sat outside on the terrace and enjoyed a lovely meal. DAY 6 TUESDAY JUNE 7 TH 2016 LOWER VALLE DE GUADIARO A short day today, we went out at 2:30pm after a morning of leisure in the village, it was another dry, hot day... After a late lunch we drove down towards the coast and turned into the Valley where the river Genal meets the river Guadiaro. Along the way we noted White Stork, Black Kite (unusual for this time of year), Common Raven, Woodchat Shrike, Corn Bunting, Stonechat, Crested Larks and Bee-eaters. Our first stop was at the Rio Genal, where we watched Little Ringed Plover, White Wagtail, Linnets, Turtle Dove and Booted Eagle. Marbled Skipper Despite the beautiful sunny weather it was a little windy as we ventured further down the valley. We parked just after the site where the river Guadiaro meets the river Genal and walked along a raised bank. A Common Kingfisher was nice to see, it perched on a log then hovered a couple of times before flying off. We watched European Bee-eaters visiting their nest holes, a family party of Sardinian Warblers in the scrub, a Common Sandpiper on the river bank and several finches coming down to drink.
my favourite bird - CORN BUNTING After watching the river for a while we set off back to Gaucin, a Short-toed Eagle was nice sighting on the way back up the valley. That concluded our day's birding! DAY 7 WEDNESDAY JUNE 8 TH 2016 GAUCIN WOODS - TRACKS NEAR SAN PABLO INCLUDING MARCHENILLA - SAN ENRIQUE Our last full, but leisurely, day. Ann and Bob leave tomorrow morning so we made the most of today... The beautiful weather continued and probably will until October! Dry, hot and sunny with a breeze along the valleys. We had a pre-breakfast jaunt to the Chestnut Woods just above Gauncin on the Ronda road. It was as perfectly still, not a leaf stirred in the forest which made finding birds so much easier. The view from Gaucin into the Genal Valley with Sierra Crestellina peeking through
As soon as we got out of the car we found Crested Tit, at least three were feeding in an oak tree nearby. Very soon afterwards we located a Eurasian Nuthatch from its call and a Great Spotted Woodpecker landed not far away. It took a little longer to find Firecrest but when we did it was amazing, three or four of these birds came very close to us as they foraged in a cork oak. We added several common birds to the morning list before we returned to the house for breakfast. We were out again before 10am and we drove to San Pablo before turning off on a side road to San Martin. Our first stop was at a Pig Farm where a colony of Bee-eaters were breeding in holes made on a sloping dirt-bank. It was surreal, the most colourful bird in Europe was happily breeding in amongst smelly black pigs! European Bee-eater in the pig yard We then parked on a bridge over the Guadiaro river and we walked down to the river below the bridge, that is where we had great views of Western Olivaceous Warbler, a great sighting and much better views than last time. We also had glimpses of Cetti's Warbler whilst Blackcap and Common Nightingale led the morning chorus. The Marchenilla track was as good as ever, full of finches, European Bee-eaters, Melodious and Sardinian Warblers, Corn Buntings and Crested Larks. The local celebrity, the Rufous Bush Robin, gave us the run around for a while, but showed well for brief spells. We also had excellent views of the huge Short-toed Eagle, Common Buzzard, Booted Eagle and some distant Griffon Vultures.
Melodious Warbler along the Marchenilla Track As we continued along the track we found an expected Tawny Pipit and then an unexpected Spanish Sparrow, a male of course. This was a surprise because I know they winter in this area but they don't usually stay in the spring, perhaps this one is breeding! We had lunch at a ford over the river Hozgargante watching Grey Wagtails, Linnets and various finches coming to drink. Several dragonflies were on the wing with Epaulette Skimmer, Blue Emperor, Common Clubtail and one of the Pincertails. Female Epaulette Skimmer After lunch and a coffee break we stopped at San Enrique Woods and finally caught up with Tree Sparrow, whilst waiting for the Sparrow we saw White Wagtail, Cirl Bunting, Red-rumped Swallow, Spotless Starlings, Serins and a Monarch Butterfly.
We then drove along the coast to Estepona where the car had to have a couple of new tyres before we headed back to Gaucin. Along the way we passed the municipal rubbish tip where hordes of Griffon Vultures were joined by Yellow-legged Gulls, Black Kites and the odd White Stork. Western Clubtail dragonfly Well that just about concluded the bird tour, we have very little time available tomorrow before driving to the airport to drop Ann and Bob off. It had been a nice leisurely week: Sightings: 121 species of birds is not a bad total, 25 butterfly species, half a dozen dragonflies, mammals reptiles and amphibians made up the rest of our wildlife sightings. DAY 8 THURSDAY JUNE 9 TH 2016 TRANSFER FROM GAUCIN TO MALAGA AIRPORT There was no time for birding today, we had leisurely breakfast and set out at 10am for the airport. I waved goodbye to Bob and Ann as they entered the departure terminal, another successful tour was over. Later I caught a flight to Madrid in preparation for my next tour, the Spanish Pyrenees and Picos de Europa, which begins tomorrow.
