TOUR COST 600 per person, single room supplement of 80 excluding flights. ACCOMMODATION Our trip was arranged on a Self-catering basis with continental breakfast provided. Each client paid 6 euros per day for a packed lunch & drink, which we took out with us during the day whilst birdwatching. We stay in a 3 storey white washed house in a small mountain settlement, there are 2 double rooms with en-suites, plus 2 Twin en-suite bedrooms & 1 single room. The house is a lovely traditional example set in a typical white walled, narrow streeted Spanish mountain village. Evening meals were not included in the cost of the tour, but were arranged each evening at the local bar & on average a 3 course meal (simple Spanish food) with a couple of glasses of wine cost 16 euros per person. FLIGHTS Easyjet flight from Luton to Madrid were approximately in Early booking is advisable for the best prices. DAY ONE ARRIVAL & COLLECTION FROM AIRPORT I met up with some of the group in Leicester & transported them down to Luton airport where we met up with the rest of the group in the airport departure area. Our flights from Luton via Eayjet were slightly delayed but nothing too serious! We arrived in Madrid late afternoon, collected our 9 seater minibus & eventually hit the highway heading for Cabezabellosa, nr Plascensia. The journey was uneventful & we eventually arrived in the darkness & were greeted by Marco & Ricardo Montero, the owners of our accommodation for the week. We had a first meal in the local bar, again typical Central Spanish fayre, washed down with some of the local wine.

DAY TWO MONFRAGUE NP The morning was slightly grey & damp & after breakfast we left around 9am but with the forecast for a slow improvement. I decided to start with a visit to the Embalse area just north of Plascencia. A short stop for fuel provided a small overhead group of 5 RED KITE, plus 4 smart HAWFINCH. The area around the Embalse de Plascencia proved rewarding with our first views of AZURE-WINGED MAGPIE, SPOTLESS STARLING we eventually had good views & around 40 AZURE-WINGED MAGPIE, were noted in a single flock. Also of note were several CRESTED LARK, plus good views of 2-3 HOOPOE. We then headed off out to explore the beautiful Monfrague NP & we headed first for the famous Salto del Gitano this famous cliff face hosts Europe s largest vulture colony. We had good views of the 12+ BLACK, VULTURE, 100 GRIFFON VULTURE, 2 BLUE ROCK THRUSH, PEREGRINE, RED KITE, we also noted some small groups of migrating GREY-LAG GOOSE & COMMON CRANES. We made a couple of stops & then explored one of the trails near the Visitor centre area. This produced 2-3 more HOOPOE, CRAG MARTIN, BLACKCAP, CHIFF-CHAFF, IBERAIN CHIFF CHAFF, SARDINIAN WARBLER, NUM BLACK REDSTART, WOODLARK, CRESTED LARK, great views of FIRECREST, CRESTED TIT, SHORT-TOED TREECREEPER, plus many CORN BUNTING & a single CIRL BUNTING. We finished the day with an evening meals & wine in the village of Cabezabellosa. Images from left to right Griffon Vulture, Black Vulture, Corn Bunting, White Wagtail, Hoopoe & Great Bustard,

DAY THREE We had breakfast around 7.30am before heading off at 8.30am for a day of birding in the plains areas. We started birding at the westerly area of Embalse de Talavan & from here we slowly headed east on the minor tracks, making many stops throughout the day & finishing in the area of Torrejon El Rubio. It was a successful day with the main target species all being recorded:-20+ GREAT BUSTARD, 10 LITTLE BUSTARD, 10 BLACK-BELLIED SANDGROUSE & 50 PIN-TAILED SANDGROUSE. All of the above species were seen perched on the ground, with very good views of BLACK- BELLIED SANDGROUSE. We also had wonderful flocks of CALANDRA LARK (100+) & good flocks of pipits & finches. These of course attracted the attentions of a few raptors with MERLIN, SPARROWHAWK & HEN HARRIER all noted. Through the day we added a nice selection of birds 2 BLACK, VULTURE, 12 GRIFFON VULTURE, 20 COMMON BUZZARD, 100 CRANES, the fields were full of LAPWING, plus smaller no s of GOLDEN PLOVER, 2 GREENSHANK, 1 GREEN SANDPIPER, 3 LITTLE OWL, 10 HOOPOE & lots of SPOTLESS STARLING, STONECHAT & BLACK REDSTART. The hedges & overhead lines held good numbers of SOUTHERN GREY SHRIKE and by the end of the day we had seen 20+, we saw more AZURE-WINGED MAGPIE & we also noted our first SERIN & SPANISH SPARROW. We finished the day with an evening meals & wine in the village of Cabezabellosa. DAY FOUR We had breakfast around 7.30am before heading off at 8.30am for a day of birding in the Dehesa habitat followed by a visit to a high level mountain area at Pena Franca. As we drove through the dehesa we constantly stopped to admire groups of CRANES feeding on the ground, we also had very nice views of small groups of ROCK SPARROWS. We stopped off at some roadside pools which proved productive with GREAT WHITE EGRET, LITTLE EGRET, CATTLE EGRET, GREENSHANK, GREEN SANDPIPER, STONE CURLEW (was heard), KINGFISHER, RED KITE were numerous overhead, a PEREGRINE swept by flushing everything in the process! WHITE WAGTAIL, SOUTHERN GREY SHRIKE were present around the pools. A short drive & I stopped for what I expected to be a Cirl Bunting, but on lifting the bin s I recognised the more familiar sight of a male YELLOWHAMMER. Ricardo our Spanish guide was extremely excited, it was a rare bird in Extrmemadura & it turned out to be the 4 th record for the region! We then explored a high wooded valley with a large area of dead poplars, not surprising we located several GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, but also 4 IBERIAN GREEN WOODPECKER, also ROCK BUNTING, FIRECREST, WOODLARK, SHORT-TOED TREECREEPER noted here. After a long steady ascending drive, we eventually reached the monastery at the top of the mountain area of Pena Franca. After a fruitless search of around an hour, we were just

about to leave having seen very little. But Ricardo suddenly shouted us over & our quarry of ALPINE ACCENTOR was found & suddenly showing very well. Amazingly, over the next 5 minutes we saw no less than a group of 10 ALPINE ACCENTORS, two of the individuals proving to be very confiding and showing down to a just a few metres. We stopped off, but were unsuccessful in our search for Crossbill, but the stop proved fruitful as we had brief views of DARTFORD WARBLER & 5 CHOUGH flew overhead. It was a long drive down the mountain, but it had proven well worthwhile! We finished the day with an evening meals & wine in the village of Cabezabellosa. 7 DAY FIVE We left at the usual time of 8.30, we headed for an area of gravel pits that Ricardo knew. On arrival we had excellent views of PENDULINE TIT, plus briefer views of FAN-TAILED WARBLER & CETTI S WARBLER. We had flight views of RED AVADAVAT, but as per usual it was difficult to obtain good perched views. A ringtail HEN HARRIER flew over & the pools added a good selection of wildfowl, SHOVELER, GADWALL, TEAL, MALLARD all expected species, plenty of LITTLE GREBE plus 1 BLACK-NECKED GREBE. We drove on to a nearby area of rice-fields & from the minibus, we found 3 GREENSHANK, several WHITE STORK, a GREAT WHITE EGRET, several CATTLE EGRET, lots of LAPWING, 2 WATER PIPIT plus an obliging FAN-TAILED WARBLER. We arrived perfectly on time at Portillo el Tietar, we lunched and scanned skywards GRIFFONS filled the air, plus several BLACK VULTURE. A PEREGRINE kept us all entertained with at least 4 attempts at catching one of the passing Feral Pigeon, just a few minutes later I locked on to an eagle sp. As it drifted towards me I realised it was a BONELLI S EAGLE & we had reasonable if a little distant scope views. It then took a further hour of scanning when eventually THE raptor appeared. A pair of SPANINSH IMPERIAL EAGLE started off distantly but slowly came closer & closer. Eventually we were getting fantastic views with one of the SPANISH IMPERIAL EAGLE gliding in front of the adjacent cliffs, suddenly it stooped down & we were able to witness it rob a perched PEREGRINE of it s prey. Both Eagles continued to show well for a further 10 minutes soaring over the ridge. We also added a few other species whilst we sat watching the area CRANES & SPARROWHAWK overhead plus a BLUE ROCK THRUSH on the rock stack opposite. Later despite staying until near dark we were unable to see or hear Eagle owl, which was surprising considering the three I noted here last year. We finished the day with an evening meal on the outskirts of Plascencia before heading back to our accommodation. DAY SIX We had breakfast around 7.450am before heading off at 9am, we had decided on a slightly later start as the weather forecast was for a rather wet day & we awoke to heavy rain. Due to the poor weather we decided to head for Arroyocampo where we could birdwatch partly from the car & also take refuge in the hides around the wetland reserve. Despite the heavy rain, we were really pleased to locate 2 BLACK-WINGED KITE, before we had even reached the reserve. We had nice scope views of them perched whilst sheltering under umbrella s! At the Arroyocampo reserve we quickly located PURPLE SWAMPHEN, plus several MARSH HARRIER, WATER RAIL was heard, more surprising was the distant reeling of a SAVI S WARBLER. We had a brief views of BLUETHROAT & COMMON WAXBILL before another very heavy shower had us running again for shelter. We managed a few more short stops & forays, resulting in PINTAIL & WIGEON being added to the list. We decided to head back late afternoon & we finished off the day round the fire with hot cups of tea & coffee!

DAY SEVEN We started the day with a drive through the dehesa areas, we had nice views of many of the same species, but over 150 CRANES were a beautiful sight overhead, Plus a MERLIN & PEREGRINE flashed by. COOMON SANDPIPER, GREEN SANDPIPER, GREENSHANK, KINGFISHER were again present around the pools. We then searched a series of olive groves, we had nice views of WOODLARK, CRESTED LARK, SHORT-TOED TREECREEPER, RED KITE, BALCK VUTLURE, GRIFFON VULTURE & RAVEN. But were unable to locate any THEKLA LARK. We finished the trip with a lovely couple of hours at the Embalse de Gabriel Y Galan, good views of 17 STONE CURLEW, plus a surprise group of 15 AVOCET. The lake also held good numbers of WIGEON, TEAL, GADWALL, plus a few GREAT CRESTED GREBE & PINTAIL. The day finished with 1100 CRANES going to roost with a backdrop to a beautiful sunset DAY EIGHT Departed the accommodation, & transported back to the airport for flights back to the UK
