35 Summary BIAZA Research Committee (BRC) encourages, facilitates and monitors research in member collections; BRC encourages research by running an annual research symposium, publishing research news and maintaining a Facebook page; The number of talks and posters presented at symposia have increased since 1999; BRC facilitates research through a project approval process and the publication of research guidelines derived from workshops; Applications for support have increased but it would be good to see fewer not supported; BRC monitors research through the Research Database; By far the majority of projects in the database are on mammals and are about behaviour; most of the research is done by a small number of zoos and a small number of academic institutions; More research should be encouraged on non-mammals, and on conservation and welfare; more smaller zoos and more academic institutions should be encouraged into zoo research.
