13 The Focus of the Campaign The campaign is focussed on increasing resources (funds, networks, public and political awareness, knowledge and holding capacities in zoos) to mitigate the Asian Songbird Crisis The campaign is about live animal trade for entertainment or later consumption (including exportation but not parts or meat) The campaign is focussed on Asian markets The campaign is about illegal or unsustainable trade and not per se a blind move to stop any kind of trade The Campaign will try to offer the opportunity for as many EAZA members as possible to join the campaign

16 Songbird Arch of Southeast Asia Project intends to build unique facility for conservation breeding of selected passerine species, which may face the extinction in very near future in Java. Project is planned to be composed from 5 units and EAZA campaign will fund one of such unit.

17 Sumatran Songbird Sanctuary Mission of Sumatran Songbird Sanctuary centre would be to provide field teams for different conservation activities in the island of Sumatra regarding to the actual conservation needs. Biggest part of the centre would be conservation breeding unit built in the land of YEL orangutan haven. Next essential component of 3S centre will be internationally managed research centre providing networking among local and international academics.

18 Treasure Island Crucial survival of Nias Hill Myna is dependent on sufficient protection of its last remaining territory in one island..no NAME. With the legal permit NGO is the only organization allowed to protect this island with their field rangers. In cooperation with other NGOs (Ecosystem Impact, Lestari z.s.) salaries of field rangers are only partly covered. Songbird protection in the island is executed by rangers only as bycatch while rangers are protecting sea turtles nest sites.

19 Magiao Nature Heritage Conservation Breeding Center The aim is to establish a Conservation Awareness and Pride Campaign in Nias in conjunction with the establishment of a breeding center for Songbirds initially focused on the Nias Hill Myna. There still are a considerable number of singly kept pet Hill Mynas to be found with private owners throughout the Island of Nias. Therefore it can be assumed that the remaining captive birds on Nias are aging and that time is of essence to establish an ex-situ population.

20 Javan mountain bird monitoring Intensive surveys of heavily traded songbirds in two of West Java s most significant forests. Investigation is necessary for several reasons: first, it is vital to discover whether (and in what numbers) the species survive in any of the forests, and second, if the species are gone, we need to determine how suitable any of the forests is for reintroduction purposes. Moreover, there are many other threatened species in West Java s forests, including three primates, that also require urgent assessment and can be targeted in the survey work.

21 Bali myna post-releasing research This three-year project will support the Indonesian authorities in establishing significant free-flying, safe and sustainable populations of Bali Myna in Bali Barat National Park (BBNP) and other sites. It includes a major radio-tracking project to monitor post-release birds, and a variety of conservationrelevant study by an existing PhD student and Indonesian students.

25 As an EAZA member What can you do It is a great opportunity to develop relationship to your local BirdLife Partner organisation and highlight its activities to your visitors. The organisation will help you promote awareness on the Asian Songbird Crisis within your country and get people involved in citizen science activities for local songbirds as well. What more you can do..

26 What more you can do What can you do - Review your internal collection planning and see if there is not a little more space for threatened Asian Songbirds in your zoo. - Get in touch with the Passerine TAG. - Adopt the new or updated best practise husbandry guidelines for all focus species under ex-situ management and support and promote in-situ projects or in-region breeding programs. - Organise activities and display information panels in your zoo. - Recruit zoo-volunteers in all ages to be songbird advocates and to help you with campaign promotion and education activities. - Explain to visitors about ethical issues related to keeping tropical birds as pets, and promote keeping domesticated species instead. - Join us in celebrating the World Songbird Day on the day of the Eurovision Final in your zoo with fun activities.

27 What can you do What more you can do Institutions not actually keeping Asian Songbirds may still participate by using audio education material from the Campaign InfoPack. On the Silent Forest websites you can download a range of new or updated resources during the campaign period which you are invited to use.

28 As public What can you do Helping is easy. Here are is a few tips. While you are on vacation in the Asian region, help detect illegal wildlife trade by using the smartphone app Wildlife Witness. Help spread the information about the crisis among other tourists and locals in your home area. Even wild bird populations in Europe are collapsing due to the trade in Asia. But not just for the trade in Asia, even in France and Mediterranean region songbirds such as Ortolan Buntings and Blackcaps are illegally captured and eaten. Support the campaign against bird killing. What more you can do..

Join the citizen science projects organised by birdwatching clubs and get involved in local bird surveys. - Bird-friendly garden + bird-feeder + winter food for birds + nest-box = help increase the breeding success of local birds. - Prevent bird collisions by reducing transparency and reflectivity of dangerous glass areas. - Keep your domestic cat indoors and encourage friends and family who keep cats to do the same.
