1 Songbird Station Stories Specials Events and More to Help Your Family Enjoy Birding! Since the day we opened Songbird Station, part of our mission statement has been that it is our goal to, Help families enjoy nature together! Late spring and summer is a great time for your family to enjoy nature. The combination of new summer visitors and the process of nesting and the raising of fledglings makes this an exciting and fun time. After much urging I just purchased my first fancy phone which receives photos. One of the first I received was a photo of Bluebird eggs in the Songbird Essentials Ultimate Bluebird House that my son Grant and his wife Tarah had placed in the backyard of their home in Southwest Columbia. You can check out the photo on our website com. It s the most excited I ve seen Grant since his wedding. Don t miss Grant s stories on Goldfinches and Orioles in this edition of Songbird Station News. As I write this I m excited that finally several Hummingbirds are visiting my feeders. This year s cold spring seems to have delayed a lot of our feathered friends arrivals. Don t give up! Your favorites will visit you! In this article I thought I d share a few things you can do to help our feathered friends out. The Purple Martins were several weeks later arriving than the past 2 years and as a bird that normally eats flying insects the cold weather has made it tough on them. Rain as well as cold hinders flying insects. To help my Martins, as well as Bluebirds, I ve fed record numbers of live and dried mealworms this spring. Check out the video we shot of me feeding the Martins mealworms and keeping them warm with a birdbath heater on our website. When I feed my Bluebirds mealworms at home, I ring my Chow Time Birdie Bell from Songbird Essentials and they line up for dinner!! Speaking of Bluebirds, I ve also kept busy cutting down on the English Sparrow population. After Sparrows evicted a Bluebird that had started nesting next to my driveway, I utilized one of SE6016 our house traps to catch and eliminate the Sparrow. Within hours the happy Bluebird returned to start over with her nest building. I m also excited to report 2 Bluebird nests and 1 Chickadee nest (100% occupancy) in the 3 new houses my daughter and wife helped me erect in the lot between us and our neighbor. I always recommend utilizing a large 18 baffle on the pole to protect the birds from predators. Boy, was I glad I did when I saw a neighborhood cat lurking beneath one of the houses. I really like how the Nest Lifts in our Ultimate House keeps the nest up and dry, so we now have available the Nest Lift (SE6015) for you to put in your box that you already have up. Try Em - You ll raise more babies and it s easy to clean between nestings. Goldfinches are getting their bright summer colors and now is when we enjoy them the most. With all the rain we ve received it s important that you empty your feeders and clean them well. We offer great brushes and natural enzyme products at Songbird Station that make cleaning easy. Late Spring 2011 NEWS Enjoy Late Spring & Summer on The Wild Side Nest Lift SE6015 Chow Time Birdie Bell Fill your Finch feeders with fresh Nyjer thistle or better yet, Finch Special. You ll be amazed how many more Goldfinches come to your feeders when you do this. I always am! Another visitor I see each spring and summer on my 3-Tube Thistle Feeder is the brilliant Blue Indigo Bunting. Buntings also like Millet, so I make sure I have some Coles White Millet on my Recycled Plastic Ground Feeders. This time of year I add a couple Finch Magic Thistle Sacks so I can inexpensively allow more places for the colorful Goldfinches to feed. In true Tiger fashion, we have Finch sacks available in both Black and Gold! The last thing I just finished today was putting up my Orange Magnets to attract the Baltimore Orioles. Under one bright orange dome I put up an Oriole Nectar Feeder (made in Central MO). Under another I put up a Fruit & Jelly Feeder, oranges on the spikes and BirdBerry Jelly in the dish!! Jelly really helps attract and hold Orioles and BirdBerry Jelly is better for the Orioles than cheap store brands!! Check out Grant s article May Day on page 2 for more information on Orioles. Try out some of the above tips and it s my hope you ll enjoy a late spring and summer yard full of bright colored Best Long Brush SE603 Jumbo Magic Thistle Sack Gold SE637 Fruit & Jelly Oriole Feeder SERUBFJF feathered friends from the Wild Side!! Enjoy the show!!

2 MAY DAY...MAY DAY...Orioles Are Starting to Land By: Grant Toellner While the baseball team the Baltimore Orioles season may have already started, the true Baltimore Orioles will start arriving any day now in Mid-Missouri. May 1st is when most Orioles start arriving in Missouri, thus the term May Day. Baltimore Orioles initially were named the Baltimore-bird by English naturalist Mark Catesby. He thought its colors were the same as those of Cecil Calvert, who was the second Lord Baltimore that created the colony of Maryland. Today Orioles are one of America s favorite summer birds. They migrate and breed from just East of the Rockies all the way to the East Coast. Male Orioles are like many other birds, they re most recognizable and known for their unmistakable black and orange plumage in the spring and summer. Female Orioles tend to be a much duller color than males with a darkish olive head and pale orange belly. While you can t attract an Oriole by providing a nest box, one great way to see Orioles in your backyard is by providing them with food. Providing Orioles with food resources as they migrate through and set up for breeding season is a great way to keep Orioles around your yard. The best food resources to attract orioles to your yard are fruit, nectar and their number one favorite, jelly. Oranges are an Oriole s favorite fruit snack. You can feed them by simply sticking a half orange on a fence post or even more effectively by using a Double Orange Feeder by Songbird Essentials. Nectar is another food resource Oriole s love and you can supply this by using an Oriole Double Orange Feeder SE6005 nectar feeder. One great feeder to try is the Fliteline Jr. Oriole Feeder by Songbird Essentials. It is great because it has a large 30 ounce capacity, built in bee/wasp guards and has an easy snap apart base for cleaning. While fruit and nectar attract Orioles, the number one way to keep them around your backyard all summer long is by feeding them their meal of choice, jelly. The Jelly/Jam Feeder by Songbird Essentials is the top selling jelly feeder on the market and is a great choice to use if you plan on feeding jelly. The Jelly/ Jam Feeder is great because it comes with a small jar you can screw in and out of the feeder for simple refilling and easy cleaning. Oriole s favorite two jelly flavors are grape and blackberry, and there is another great product from Songbird Essentials called Birdberry Jelly that actually combines the two flavors and is all natural and doesn t contain artificial sweeteners and preservatives that can be harmful to the birds. You can feed both jelly and oranges on our 2 new Orange Recycled Plastic Oriole Feeders. The Grand Fliteline Jr. Oriole Feeder SEBCO230 Grand Slam Oriole Feeder SERUBGRAND Jelly/Jam Feeder Slam holds 4 orange halves and 2 bowls of jelly. Want to learn SEBCO212 more about Baltimore Orioles? Stop by Songbird Station and pick up a free tip sheet on Orioles which is loaded with information on migration, feeders, and tons of other information relating to Orioles. 3 Add a Little Charm To Your Backyard By: Grant Toellner If you are looking to add a little charm to your backyard, it s simple, just put up some feeders and attract a charm of Goldfinches. A group of Goldfinches like Hummingbirds, are actually referred to as a charm of Goldfinches. The American Goldfinch is one of the spring and summer s most recognizable backyard visitor because of the beautiful bright gold color the males turn during these months, thus the name Goldfinch. American Goldfinches are the only finch that molt its feathers twice a year, once in late winter and again in late summer. They also are among the strictest vegetarians in the bird world, because their entire diet is comprised mostly of seeds and only occasionally eating an insect. Thistle and sunflower seeds make up a large part of the Goldfinch s diet. They eat a large portion of these at bird feeders. Goldfinch s favorite mix seems to be Finch s Special, which is thistle seed blended together with chopped up sunflower kernels. They absolutely love it!! While there are many great bird feeders geared to meet a Goldfinch s appetite, here are a few that are great for getting that charm in your backyard. One simple way to feed Goldfinches is by using thistle sacks. Songbird Essentials makes a variety of thistle sacks from 12 to 36 in a black color that Goldfinches love and are great because they are made out of durable, weather resistant mesh. The Finch s gold color really stands out while they are eating on the black thistle sacks. Another great feeder to consider that can handle a charm of Finches all at once is the Songbird Essentials Triple Tube Feeder. This feeder is great because it actually has three tubes with 36 different feeding ports that allows up to 24 different Finches to feed at once. That s a lot of gold in your backyard! Another great feeder that Goldfinch s love to hang out around is one of the spiral feeders from Songbird Essentials. These spiral feeders come in a sunflower design as well as thistle, and Goldfinch s love to run its spiral instead of going from perch to perch. The spiral feeder also has more ports than most bird feeders which means Jumbo Finch Magic Thistle Sack SE613 your backyard. more birds, and the feeder has an easy-twist bottom making it easy to clean. 4 All Songbirds Love to Karaoke By: Grant Toellner For most people singing in front of others is at the bottom of the list of things they want to do. This is why many decide to bust out their gifted vocal skills either in the car or shower where no one else can hear. I have from time to time participated in the art of karaoke, and even though I might think the talent is there, I would never want to rely on it to attract a mate. For songbirds, their song, or karaoke, is one of the key ways to impress mates. Songbirds account for about half of the world s 9,600 different species, and here in North America they make up about 40 percent of the 750 species. Songbirds are allowed to sing so beautifully because they have an avail vocal organ called a syrinx. The syrinx is like a double voice box found at the bottom of a songbird s windpipe that lets the bird control the pitch and volume of the song. Some birds seem to have a larger playlist than others. The Brown Thrasher for example can sing up to 2,000 distinct songs, while the Henslow s Sparrow is thought to only have one. If you are looking for the best time to hear a songbird, they generally sing the most in the early morning or late afternoon. The male Purple Martin sings his infamous dawnsong early in the morning and Martins several miles away can hear the sound. His hope is to attract other Martins to the colony for more mating opportunities. Woodpeckers also perform a song to attract mates, but instead of being superb vocalists, they tend to be more drummers. Instead of singing Woodpeckers will drum their bills against trees during courtship making songs other members of the species can recognize. In doing this Woodpeckers look for dry branches or hollow logs so they can best maximize the volume of the drums. If you want to be an expert on bird songs, or simply want to learn more, Songbird Station has great books and CD s available on identifying bird Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs East STOKES songs. A great CD to try loaded with all bird songs in this area, is the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs East. A great, simple book to use to learn all about bird songs is the Backyard Birdsong Guide by Chronicle Books. Backyard Habitat Song To the tune of Home on the Range Oh give me a home Where the Goldfinches roam Where the Wrens and the Woodpeckers play Where often is heard The bold Chickadee s chirp And the Monarchs their eggs they do lay Home, home, they all say Where the birds have a great place to stay Where migrants come back For a rest and a snack And the Butterflies don t fly away By Michelle Serreyn Backyard Birdsong Guide CB Songbird Station 2011 Columbia Small Business of the Year We re extremely honored & humbled to receive this award. 5 Bug Vacuum TS4023 Going Buggy Insects & Spiders to Paint RH Bug Bingo LH2777 SAVE 10% Any Bingo or Monopoly Game Kid s Corner SAVE 10% By: Holly Seaver Songbird Station Manager Let s talk about insects!! Insects are tiny creatures in a big world, but there is much to learn about them. You may ask, Why are we talking about insects instead of birds? The answer is that insects are very good for our birds and gardens, and because of this it s important that we know a little bit more about them. Insects make up the majority of diets for many of our birds. Purple Martins primarily eat bugs, as do Robins. Our state bird, the Bluebird, also loves to eat insects. Bugs also help our birds by carrying pollen from one plant to another, or to another area. By doing this insects are helping to provide birds with more places to live and eat. Songbird Station has many things in our Kid s Corner to help you learn more about insects. Check out our Bug Vacuum. This is a great little kit that you can use to catch, look closely at, and release all kinds of little critters. The Bug Vacuum comes with a vacuum catcher and an observation tube with magnification lens and tweezers. You can also use our Critter Case to go out into the yard, catch a Butterfly or insect, watch it for a while and turn the critter loose. For those that don t really want to catch bugs, but still want to learn more, check out Going Buggy. This is a new painting and coloring book for ages 3 and up that comes with a set of paints. Also check out some of the board games we offer which are fun for the whole family, but still manage to teach about bugs. First is Bug-opoly (a buggy version of Monopoly). Bug-opoly is a look inside the wonderful bug kingdom. Buy, sell and trade your favorite insects (and a few of their friends because not every bug included in the game is technically an insect.) As you play, flip over the deeds and read some amazing and fun facts. Also try our Bug Bingo. Fun to play and will help you learn to identify different insects. Game contains 42 calling cards with detailed information about each character, 6 playing boards and chips to mark your spot. This game is designed for the whole family to enjoy while learning. Stop in to Songbird Station today and see ALL of the fun insect things we have. Here are some fun questions and answers about Insects Q. Is there a difference between a bug and an insect? A. A bug is a type of insect that has a straw type mouth so it can suck plant juices from plants. Q. Are there any insects that are good for anything? A. Absolutely!! Bees make honey for us, many bugs helps with pollinating plants, silk moths make silk for clothes, and some even eat the harmful insects, which saves us money and the use of harmful pesticides. Q. What do insects eat? A. Almost anything! Some eat plants, some eat other insects, some eat nectar from plants, some like mosquitoes, eat blood, and some like ants, will even be glad to polish off that cookie you dropped on the floor. Q. Is a spider an insect? A. No. There are a few differences between the spiders and the insects. Insects have 3 body parts and 6 legs while spiders have 2 body parts and 8 legs. 7 Ask Bird Man Mel Bird Man Mel Owner of Songbird Station Squirrel Resistant Suet Palace SE6000 Large Green Caged Thistle Feeder SESAN93008 Q. We like Robins. Is there anything we can do to attract more Robins to our yard?? A. Yes, Robins can be attracted to your yard a couple of ways. Robins readily eat live mealworms. They often come to my Hiatt Stake Feeders filled with mealworms I put out for the Bluebirds. In fact Robins are funny to watch as no bird tries to fit more worms in their mouth. You might be surprised to know worms make up only 15-20% of a Robins summer diet. They also eat insects, nuts, berries and fruit. Robins also readily and heartily use and enjoy a bird bath. If you don t have many trees in your hard for nesting you might want to try putting up a Robins Roost Nesting Shelf (SESCS401). Q. Last year about this time lots of Blackbirds and Grackles started trying to take over my feeders. Any solution to this problem? A. Yes, actually a couple. 1. You can get cages to go around tubes and smaller hoppers that keep the larger Grackles and Blackbirds out. Our Sanctuary Feeders offer a feeder in a cage with an English garden look complete with a wall hook. Our Suet Palace (SE6000) keeps these birds as well as Squirrels and Starlings away from your suet. 2. On open trays and larger hopper feeders I recommend switching to Safflower as Grackles don t seem to like it. Lots of customers tell us Safflower helps solve this problem, plus some Squirrels don t seem to like it. Q. My wife likes Butterflies. Any way we can attract more to our yard? A. Like many questions I m asked this one has multi answers. 1. #1 thing you can do is quit using chemicals in your yard - Go Organic!! Try our line of organic lawn, shrub and gardening products at Songbird Station. Your yard will come alive with Butterflies and native Songbirds when you quit using chemicals. 2. Plant flowers and shrubs for both mature Butterflies and Caterpillars. Native plants are by far the best! Check Songbird Station for our great assortment of native plants including hard to find plants like Butterfly Milkweed a favorite of Monarchs. Info on plants is available on our website. 3. Put out supplement food sources. Last issue I spoke of hiding a plate of fruit in the flower bed and allowing Fruit Flies to develop that both Hummingbirds and Butterflies will eat. Put out watermelon as a Monarch favorite. You ll also want to try our new Songbird Essentials Butterfly Feeder & Nectar. Both were designed, formulated and tested by a known Butterfly expert. The feeder has wicks which mimic flower blossoms. The nectar has salts, trace minerals and orchard extracts to attract and nourish the Butterflies. Remember for best results use one of our short hooks and Hang it down low, where the wind don t blow!! Q. Last year my neighbor asked me to quit using my birdbath because it could cause a mosquito problem - Should I worry about what he said? A. Standing water can be a place that causes mosquitoes to reproduce. A couple of ways to stop that: 1. Spray out and clean the bath weekly. Our Bird Bath Brush (SE601) is great for scrubbing baths without scratching them and we even have a brush that goes on the end of a water hose. 2. Moving water does not support mosquito development so put something like the Allied Precision Water Wiggler in the bath. Remember moving water also attracts 10 times more birds. We even have a solar powered Water Wiggler now that doesn t require batteries. If you have areas where water tends to stand, come in for some Mosquito Dunks, a safe way to eliminate mosquito problems in standing water.
