1 news-2-you Volume XV, Advanced Edition 25 n2y.com February 25, 2013 BIRD FEEDING Feeding the birds is fun! February is National Bird Feeding Month. It is a time to think about our backyard birds. The weather gets colder in February. Many birds have trouble finding food and water in the winter. Most birds like seeds and berries. By February, much of this food may be gone or covered by snow. Ponds and lakes are frozen in some areas. Many birds stay in cold areas all winter. Some birds fly to warmer places. But birds will be searching for food, even in the South. All these birds need your help! February 25, n2y, Inc. page 1

2 news page This girl is putting a bird house near her feeder. Even News-2-You has a bird feeder! How can you help? Put a bird feeder in your back yard. Put it near your window so you can watch what happens. A feeder will bring more birds to your backyard. What should you put in the bird feeder? Different birds like different kinds of food. Find out what kind of food you need by getting a bird book from a library. The book will tell you what kinds of birds live in your area. It will tell you what kinds of food each bird likes. February 25, n2y, Inc. page 2

3 news page Birds are fun to listen to, learn about and watch. Bird feeders are like restaurants for birds. Many larger birds like sunfl ower seeds. Little Goldfi nches and Sparrows like thistle seed. You can fi nd these seeds in many stores. You may also see square suet cakes that you can hang up. Woodpeckers love these. Ducks and seagulls also like bread crumbs. Do not forget about the water. Birds need to drink water, just like you do. Put a bowl of water outside a window where you can see it. If the water freezes, dump out the ice. Refi ll the bowl with fresh water. Watch the feeder too. Add more food when it gets low. February 25, n2y, Inc. page 3

4 news page Bird feeders can be very simple. Everyone has room for a bird feeder. You can hang it from a tree branch. You can put it on a pole. Some bird feeders will stick right to your window! Have fun feeding the birds during This student has trained birds to eat from her lap! National Bird Feeding Month and all winter. Birds are a beautiful part of nature. They are fun to watch and learn about. You may even want to make a journal about the birds that come to your backyard. Help the birds this winter. They will say thank you with their beautiful songs! February 25, n2y, Inc. A seed bell can be hung almost anywhere. page 4
