New team to lead Honey Creek Birdathon By Michael John Jaeger WSO President WSO will hold its biggest annual fundraiser on Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, with its 33rd annual birdathon and bandathon in the Honey Creek valley of the Baraboo Hills. The bandathon is planned for Saturday, May 13; the birdathon will be held the following day, with its walk up the valley stepping off at approximately 8 a.m. All members are invited to participate. Our fearless birdathon/bandathon leader, former WSO president and membership chair Jesse Peterson, is stepping aside, and it s taking two people to replace him. Jesse is helping Maggie Stewart and Maia Persche step into his shoes. Maggie will coordinate the fundraising aspects, while Maia will lead the Sunday morning walk up the valley. A pledge/donation card is included with this issue of the Birder. Your donations help maintain our recently expanded preserve in what The Nature Conservancy regards as one of the last great places in North America, the Baraboo Hills. Last year, through your generosity, we added over $5,700 to the Honey Creek fund to help maintain the site and battle invasives on the property. Please turn to Page 7 The Badger Birder 1 April 2017

3 Bird City recruits participants for NRF's Birdathon By Bryan Lenz Bird City Wisconsin Director Much of the success that Bird City Wisconsin has helped its communities achieve over the last eight years is the result of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin s tremendous support. As a priority project under the NRF s Bird Protection Fund, Bird City receives critical funding and outreach support that have helped it become the national conservation model that it is today. Perhaps best known for the amazing set of field trips it offers each year, the NRF raises much of its funding for the Bird Protection Fund through the Great Wisconsin Birdathon. You can think of the Birdathon as a walk-a-thon for birds. Birders form teams and solicit donations, which are all conveniently handled through the Great Wisconsin Birdathon website, and then spend a day between April 15 and June 15 birding. Fifty percent of the money raised goes to the Bird protection Fund and 50% goes back to the local community organization that raised it for conservation projects at home. It is a win-win and perhaps the best excuse in history to spend a full day out birding! Over the years, many of the teams participating in the Birdathon have been comprised of serious birders. Bird City is trying to expand Reminder: Sandhill Crane hunt is up for a vote on April 10 Around the state, at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10, the Wisconsin Conservation Congress will hold hearings in each county to discuss a multitude of DNR-related conservation issues. Whether to open a hunting season on Sandhill Cranes in Wisconsin will again be up for consideration and these hearings provide everyone in the state a chance to voice their opinion. QUESTION 80 reads Sandhill crane hunting season (540616) (requires legislation) There are 700,000 Sandhill Cranes in North America and 17 states have hunting seasons, including two states in our flyway: Kentucky and Tennessee. A management plan approved by 31 states and Canadian provinces in eastern North America established that the Eastern Population of Sandhill Cranes was large enough to be hunted and established a process for a state to apply for a limited quota based hunting season. In Wisconsin, the State Legislature must approve a quota-based hunting season on Sandhill Cranes before the DNR can develop a season Do you support legislation which would give the DNR authority to begin the process to develop a hunting season for Sandhill Cranes? YES NO The WSO Conservation Committee is asking Society members to consider this issue through the lens of four major reasons for preserving biodiversity: pragmatic, biological, aesthetic and ethical. Ethics, however, are unique to the individual, so we are asking you to decide for yourself where you stand on this issue and encouraging you to make your.voice heard on April 10. For a county-by-county listing of locations for these hearings, see 7/2017hearinglocations.pdf For a more detailed WSO issues paper on this topic: To find more information on the ICF website: savingcranes.org/ The Badger Birder 3 A p r i l the traditional model by encouraging participation from novice birders who can use the Birdathon as an education and outreach event in their communities. What better way to really get to know the place you live than by spending a day birding in the urban greenspace within city/ town/village/county limits? The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is a perfect opportunity to engage Bird City residents in birding, conservation and education while also raising money to fund local projects. The 2016 event saw a new Bird City team from Whitefish Bay, spearheaded by members of the Whitefish Bay Garden Club, have a great time birding while raising money to buy bird-friendly native plants to help in their restoration of a popular Lake Michigan overlook. Whether or not you live in a Bird City, I highly recommend that you consider participating in the Birdathon and I promise that you will find it enjoyable and rewarding. Even if birding is not your thing, you can still participate by donating to any of the Birdathon teams or to the Birdathon itself at For questions about the Birdathon or how to form a team, please contact Diane Packett at the NRF diane.packett@wisconsin.gov or Dr. Bryan Lenz at Bird City Wisconsin director@birdcitywisconsin. org Christine Thomas Milly Zantow Hugh Iltis Conservation Hall of Fame announces 2017 inductees The Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame Foundation has chosen Earth Day to honor three leaders who have contributed much to Wisconsin s Conservation Legacy. 4 The spring migration finally begins By Mark Korducki February ended as one of the warmest on record. March, however, proved to be a more typical, wintery month. A large snowstorm aided by lake enhancement dumped up to 23 inches of snow in southeastern Wisconsin. With a return to sunshine and seasonally cool temperatures this snow quickly melted. Spring migration progressed on a more timely schedule. It was a great month for waterfowl migration and some of the rare species came from this bird family. A male Barrow s Goldeneye was very cooperative for a few days in Sheboygan. This species has become harder to find the past few years. We were spoiled for over a decade by some reliable overwintering birds along Lake Michigan but this is still a rare species in the Great Lakes region. Not far from here, an inland pond produced a bird initially identified by many as a Cinnamon Teal. After careful scrutiny in better viewing conditions it was determined that this was actually a hybrid Cinnamon/Blue-winged Teal. It was still an exciting and handsome bird nonetheless. Sheboygan also hosted two Harlequin Ducks and some cooperative Longtailed Ducks. Two additional Harlequin Ducks were found in Milwaukee as well. A small group of Red-throated Loons were seen regularly in Ozaukee. It was a great month for geese as both Ross s and Greater White-fronted Geese were found in above normal numbers across much of the state. An Eastern Screech-owl was found well north of its regular range in Bayfield. A few lingering winter finches were found in the northern tier of counties, including White-winged Crossbills and both Pine and Evening Grosbeaks. Some of the early spring migrants reported by the latter part of the month included Eastern Phoebe, Tree Swallow and Common Loon. Longer daylight and increasing bird song is a welcome sign that spring has arrived In addition to compiling this monthly report, Mark Korducki coordinates Wisconsin s 92 Breeding Bird Survey routes and was the longtime voice of the WSO Hotline. Judge denies stay on recreation area plans Baraboo -- A Sauk County Circuit Court judge denied a request from the Sauk Prairie Conservation Alliance that it be granted a stay against the Department of Natural Resources on high impact activities in the Master Plan for the Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area. The criteria needed to justify a stay, ruled Judge Guy Reynolds on March 15, are very specific, and he said the Alliance did not meet those criteria. He acknowledged that there is a rule of deference that gives the DNR greater standing with such a request, as they are a state agency. Reynolds said the Alliance needed to better demonstrate that irreparable harm would result from the high impact activities, including off-road motorcycle use, military helicopters and dog training with the discharge of firearms. The Alliance said it would confer with its attorney to explore other options for securing a stay while two lawsuits proceed through circuit and federal courts. The Alliance said it did not believe that Reynolds ruling had affected its chances to win its suits. The state Natural Resources Board approved the DNR s Final Master Plan incorporating highimpact recreational uses in December 2016, triggering immediate implementation of several high-impact uses. 5 Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II Atlas your way to a life bird make a difference for conservation Is there a life bird, state bird, or county bird in Wisconsin that you really want to see? Not only is the second Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas a great way to make a difference for bird conservation, but it s also a great way to finally obtain a glimpse of that nemesis species! And Atlas team members can help you find that species! Simply choose which of these statements most applies to you and proceed: 1. If you already know your species of interest: Send an to atlas@ wsobirds.org with the following details: -- Your top 2 or 3 wish list species (they must be species that might breed in Wisconsin). -- Where in the state you d be willing to travel, by region. 2. If you re not sure which new species you might be able to find in Wisconsin, and your ebird account is reasonably up to date with all the species you have seen: Send an to atlas@wsobirds.org with the following details: -- Your ebird username (not the password, just the username) and we can use the power of ebird to determine some likely new species for you. -- Where in the state you d be willing to travel, by region. 3. If you re not sure which new species you might be able to find in Wisconsin, and your ebird account is not up to date: Go this web page and page through the list and pick out a couple of species you really want to see. yr=1900&eyr=2017&bmo=6&emo=7&r=us-wi Then send an to atlas@wsobirds.org with the following details: -- Your top 2 or 3 wish list species (must be species that might breed in Wisconsin). -- Where in the state you d be willing to travel, by region. Then, using that information, Atlas staffers will suggest some Atlas blocks where your species are likely to be found. You can sign up for a priority block, or if you re not up for that, just touch base with the atlas coordinator in the county of interest and let him or her know you might visit that block. Find the coordinator here: Volunteers urged to submit early season data Throughout Wisconsin, Bald Eagles and American Crows are sprucing up their nests, Red-tailed Hawks are pairing up, and Great Horned owls are sitting on eggs or already have young in their nests. For Wisconsin s earliest breeding species, daily sightings are already being documented for the Atlas. Mild winter weather, and the early return of some migrants, like geese, cranes and blackbirds, have many birders anxious for spring and the start of nesting season, said Ryan Brady, DNR wildlife biologist and science coordinator for the five-year Atlas survey. The Atlas is a great way to put that eagerness to work for birds and the places they call home. Organizers of this comprehensive bird survey, now entering its third year, encourage all birders and wildlife watchers to submit observations and attend free regional training workshops this month. Participants will need to survey more than 1,200 blocks of land across the state to replicate the effort from the first atlas ( ) and ensure complete coverage. Wildlife enthusiasts from Wisconsin, especially those who live in or travel to remote and sparsely populated regions, could add key data vital to completing the project, Anich added. WBBA II is led by the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory, the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative and the DNR. Since it began in 2015, more than 1,100 participants have submitted observations through ebird on more than 3 million birds and so far have documented 11 species not recorded nesting in Wisconsin during the first atlas. After the survey is completed in 2019, data will be published in a hard-copy book and online, and the dataset will be available for use by researchers, land managers and others working to conserve birds and their habitats. Want to see a Spruce Grouse for the first time? Or perhaps the Cerulean Warbler is absent from your life list. The Breeding Bird Atlas team can point you in the right direction. Regional kickoff workshop dates, locations Anyone interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities or project details is encouraged to attend one of four regional workshops, where they can hear presentations tailored to either new or returning volunteers, attend a field trip to a local birding hotspot, and meet coordinators and expert birders from their region. Two workshops remain this spring and are set for the following dates and locations: -- Northeast (Brown County) - April 8, noon to 5:30 p.m., UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Dr, Green Bay. -- Southeast (Kenosha County) - April 29, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Kenosha Public Library Northside, th Ave., Kenosha. Workshops are free but pre-registration is required. 6 DNR seeks to identify recreation priorities By Michael John Jaeger WSO President The Department of Natural Resources is embarking on a first-time study known as the Recreation Opportunities Analysis (ROA). This study will look at existing outdoor-based recreation opportunities and future recreation needs in each region of the state. The DNR says it hopes the study will identify future recreation priorities and the role of DNR properties in helping to meet them. Every five years the DNR has done a process known as SCORP (Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan). SCORP is a specific requirement for certain federal funding and tends to have a similar aim. ROA builds on the SCORP analyses, but with a broader focus. The ROA process started with meetings of statewide stakeholder groups from a variety of recreation interests. I represented WSO in these meetings, which helped develop an initial set of recreation goals. A wide variety of recreation groups were present -- motorized sports, skiers, hikers, hunters, fishers, trappers and horse enthusiasts, to name a few. The DNR s next step is to hold meetings focusing on eight specific regions (see map) where its staff will provide information on state properties and existing recreational opportunities. It will be seeking feedback on existing recreation opportunities, future needs and initial guidance on how DNR properties could help meet these needs. The first set of meetings will be in the nine county Northwoods Region: April 25 in Minocqua, April 26 in Park Falls and April 27 in Antigo. Times and locations have not yet been confirmed, but it s likely meetings be held from 4 to 7 p.m. WSO will post the meeting times and locations on its website when they become available. I encourage anyone interested in public recreation on DNR properties to participate in these meetings. More information on the ROA process, along with meeting locations and times, can be found on the DNR s project webpage, RecAnalysis/ Award winners to be honored at June convention in Carter From Page 1 Passenger Pigeon. Howe is founding director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity and Barbara Hauxhurst Cofrin Professor of Natural Science. He has been a faculty member in UWGB s Department of Natural and Applied Sciences since 1984, where he has taught courses ranging from introductory environmental science to advanced graduate courses in biology and ecology. The Silver Passenger Pigeon Award, presented to members of WSO for distinguished service to the Society, is being awarded to WSO web administrator Paul Jakoubek, of Madison, who spearheaded the modernization and expansion of WSO s web site and has overseen the transition to online registration for its convention as well as statewide meetings like those for the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative and the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas. Jakoubek devoted a major amount of time and energy to developing the WBBA II web site, hosted by WSO, developing its highly successful Sponsor a-species online initiative, events calendar, photo gallery, ebird interface and training materials. The Bronze Passenger Pigeon Award, presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their local communities or in the state to promote the field of ornithology, will go to Nicholas Anich, DNR conservation biologist and lead coordinator of the atlas. Anich was nominated as much for his role in making Wisconsin ebird a widely adopted tool for the state s birders as for his work on WBBA II, although the two are intertwined. Nominators cited his role in education the state s birders about ebird protocols, making ebird a more valuable and trusted tool for all users ; writing and/or editing numerous articles on the Wisconsin ebird Portal; helping grow the team of ebird Reviewers, and painstakingly adjusting filters to better reflect the occurrence of species. Also noted were the many things Anich and the WBBA II team have accomplished, including: uploading data from Atlas 1 into ebird, organizing Atlas kickoff meetings, getting the first-ever ebird atlassing portal online, recruiting and training county coordinators, organizing events to get the birding and general public excited about the project, supervising paid atlasers, reviewing data for errors, and finally keeping an eye on the big picture to make sure the atlas is moving forward on schedule. Anich also was lauded for his scientific acumen and leadership with Kirtland s Warbler recovery work. The Noel J. Cutright Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to bird conservation in Wisconsin, will go jointly to Tom Hauge and Karen Etter Hale, both of whom played a pivotal role in establishing the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative in 2002 to deliver the full spectrum of bird conservation through regionally-based, biologically-driven, landscape-oriented partnerships. WBCI is considered a national model for constituent engagement. Hauge resigned last October after serving as director of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Wildlife Management for 24 years. During that time he oversaw WBCI s development and played a key leadership role in moving Wisconsin into all-bird conservation. Hauge was a leader during key species restoration projects for the Whooping Crane, Trumpeter Swan and Greater Prairie Chicken. Etter Hale, winner of the Bronze Passenger Pigeon in 2004, has been a leader in all-bird conservation in Wisconsin for more than 20years and has chaired WBCI since its inception. She currently serves as director of community relations for the Wisconsin Audubon Council and for many years was executive secretary of Madison Audubon and an active conservation lobbyist. She has been a member of the Bird City Wisconsin Steering Committee since the program was launched in 2009 and serves on the steering committee for the Great Wisconsin Birdathon and the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin s Bird Protection Fund, and is a member of the Chimney Swift Working Group. 7 Keep Looking Up Feeding the birds year-round: Round 2 By Steve Petznick This article is a follow-up to the February column of Keep Looking Up that addressed the pros and cons of feeding birds throughout the year. It seems the more information a person looks up on this subject the more arguments surface on both sides of the debate. Still, the overriding feeling is that the benefits outweigh the harm, especially if the feeding station is properly maintained during the warmer months. Among the folks who replied to my request for feedback, the responses overall were in favor of feeding throughout the year. Here s a reply from a person who has studied bird life extensively over a number of years: 1) None of our feeding, summer or winter, is to help the birds. They have gotten along Steve Petznick without us for millennia. We feed because we enjoy watching them. 2) My thesis for feeding the birds year-round comes from my experiences of seeing tremendous habitat loss in prime birding areas or peripheral damage to these same areas that affect the quality of protected properties for birds. My personal records clearly show that the number of birds is in decline because of this same reason. This is a product of bird surveys and counts in the same areas over the years. Another person shared this thought: OK, we used to have feeders to see and appreciate our feathered friends, but now I see it as we are responsible to help maintain populations by providing food supplements. Still another person shared with me that they feed year-round simply for the pleasure of watching the birds. The Treman Bird Feeding Garden at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology feeds year-round. Mosquito Hill Nature Center and many other nature centers and preserves around the state also feed year-round for the pleasure. Here is what the Cornell Lab says: In the summer, there is usually plenty of natural food available for resident birds, but parent birds may take occasional quick breaks at a feeder in between searching for insects to feed their hungry nestlings. They do fine without this help, though, so the choice is entirely yours. We keep our feeders filled year-round for the benefit of the birds and the pleasure of our visitors. There are several ways to make a pledge or donation: via regular mail, or the web. You can pledge an amount per species seen/heard or per species banded or both. Typically, between 80 and 100 species are seen and about 25 banded. Or you can pledge or donate a flat amount. Everyone will receive a detailed summary of the results that will let you experience the day even from afar. -- A pledge card is enclosed with this issue of The Badger Birder. You can fill it out and mail your pledge today for just the cost of a 34-cent stamp. Or for 49 cents you can mail your donation to WSO c/o Maggie Stewart, One respondent to my column did offer some thought-provoking comments on why we should not feed. After spending a career as a wildlife manager, he feels humans have provided too much care and support and have hindered some species of birds from being able to survive and be productive on their own. We have shifted the balance so far, he argues, that some species have developed such a reliance on humans that without our assistance they may perish. This viewpoint raises an ethical question: Have we gone too far? Only time will tell if we are altering bird behavior. Look at robins. When I was growing up, robins did not stay the winter. Now thanks to shrubs and trees planted for winter survival foods, robins can stay year round if enough food is present. Are we already altering the landscape and changing behaviors for that species? One thing everyone seems to agree on is the importance of good hygiene at feeders: This means disposing of wet or moldy bird seed, changing water in birdbaths daily, removing suet in hot weather because it may spoil quickly, and changing hummingbird nectar every three days. The subject of when to take down hummingbird feeders in the fall is another matter for discussion. For years the myth has been shared that you need to take hummingbird feeders down by mid to late September so as not to encourage hummers to rely on a single food source that may prevent their natural migration and leave the bird with no food once the feeder does come down. Cornell has studied this question and found that the majority of hummers do leave in accordance with shortening daylight. Cornell recommends leaving feeders up for 1-2 weeks beyond the last regular sightings to provide a food source for the late stragglers to help insure their passage. Going back to the ethical question stated above. Are we accommodating certain members of a species so their behavior can continue and thus alter their normal departure time, or should those individuals have to deal with the consequences of their tardiness? Whether you feed year round or not is a personal choice. I hope the questions raised cause each of us to ponder our decisions Steve Petznick welcomes your opinions by contacting him at Steve.Petznick@outagamie.org. Besides being a naturalist and land steward for over 25 years at Mosquito Hill Nature Center, Steve has served on New London s Tree Board and was a catalyst for New London becoming an early Bird City Wisconsin community. 8 Field Trip Sheboygan outing gathers steam as it moves along By Tom Schultz WSO Field Trips Co-chair For a morning in mid-march, it sure seemed chilly! The temperature started out at about 18 degrees, with a moderate wind blowing, but at least it was sunny. About 25 birders showed up at the Sheboygan Marina, our gathering point, but there weren t many birds present so we soon moved to the North Point area. Two Harlequin ducks (female-type plumage) had been present here in recent days, and we found them fairly quickly. The two individuals were often swimming side-by-side, and were initially not far from shore so we had good looks. There were good-sized waves rolling in, however, and they were diving frequently so at times it was difficult to keep them in view. Another interesting duck was a Long-tailed, which was swimming with a small flock of Common Goldeneyes. A few Greater Scaup and Red-breasted Mergansers also were present. Some in the group had observed one or two Glaucous Gulls initially, but they apparently had flown off because we couldn t relocate them among the many Herring Gulls out on the lake. Our next stop was near the mouth of the Sheboygan River, near the Blue Harbor Resort. A decent number of Greater Scaup were present there, along with a few Lessers. Both Red-breasted and Common Mergansers were spotted, along with some Redheads and Hooded Mergansers. The highlight there, however, was a female White-winged Scoter found swimming out toward the breakwater. From there we took Hwy. 28 to the Greenwing Retention Ponds. There were many Canada Geese and other waterfowl present as we arrived, but many took flight before we could get close. The only birds remaining were Mallards, a few Canadas and a Lesser Scaup. Next was a stop at the Behrens Parkway Ponds, where there were many more Canada Geese, and we managed to find one Cackling Goose. The only ducks were Mallard, Ring-necked, Lesser Scaup and Bufflehead. We next made a stop at Indian Mound Park, where Great Tits have been observed -- often visiting the feeders of a neighbor. It took a while, but eventually two were spotted, and the group hustled over to try to get looks. The tits were moving about between various trees in the park, so it was difficult for many in the group to get a look. Other woodland birds present were Red-bellied, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, along with White-breasted Nuthatch, Northern Cardinal, American Crow and Black-capped Chickadee. Our group then headed over to Kohler-Andrea State Park, where we went inside the visitor center and checked the bird feeders hoping for another look at Great Tit. That was unsuccessful, but we did find Red-breasted Nuthatch, American Tree Sparrow and a few other birds. From there the plan was to check Six Mile Road, but somehow the group got separated. Before we could re-connect, we received an excited message that a Cinnamon Teal had been spotted along Hwy. KW in southern Sheboygan County, so the rest of us hurried to that location. A nice assortment of Tundra Swans, Snow Geese and a Ross s Goose that initially had been present took flight, so only the initial group of birders was able to see them. The late arrivals at first had difficulty locating the teal but it eventually it swam into view from behind some flooded trees. It appeared to be associating with a Blue-winged Teal, and Northern Shovelers, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Ducks and a few others were also present. The pond was fairly distant, and with heat rising from the field in front of us, viewing conditions were not ideal, but this small, dark-cinnamon-colored duck stood out fairly well and eventually everyone was able to get looks. There was certainly great excitement Photos by Tom Schultz Temperatures of 18-degrees greeted WSO field trip participants when they assembled at the Sheboygan marina, where this Greater Scaup was among the waterfowl seen. The group later visited Indian Mound Park in a successful search for Great Tits, newly documented breeders in Wisconsin. (Note: During subsequent days other birders were able to get better views and photos of this bird, and field marks were noted that showed that the Cinnamon Teal was actually a Cinnamon x Blue-winged Teal hybrid.) Our next stop was at the east end of Hwy. D, just north of Harrington Beach State Park in Ozaukee County, where the road deadends at Lake Michigan. Not many birds were in view there, unfortunately, and just a few Common and Red-breasted Mergansers, a Greater Scaup and a couple of Redheads were spotted. From there remaining members of the group headed south to Port Washington, where the harbor area (including Coal Dock Park) was fairly quiet and we didn t add any new birds. At this point, we were going to end the trip but decided to stop by the South Beach parking area to check the Peregrine Falcon nest box on the south side of the power plant. Good thing we did! The female was in the box and, eventually, the male flew in and sat on the southwest corner of the plant, giving us all great looks. Then a field trip participant commented that she really wanted to see a Red-throated Loon. It would be a lifer for her. So we started scanning the lake, and within a couple of minutes, I had one in my bins not too far from shore. It was diving pretty regularly but we got it in our scopes for everyone to see. We also had a couple of Surf Scoters fly by and land, but they were difficult to pin down because of the heavy wave action and the fact that they were diving. We also added a Song Sparrow working expressed by all! the shrubs along the beach. The Badger Birder 8 April 2017

9 Field Trip Waterfowl abundant in Dane, Columbia County ponds By Tom Schultz WSO Field Trips Co-chair Under cloudy skies the temperature was not bad at around 34 degrees, but there was a brisk northwest wind blowing, so it sure felt chilly at the Goose Pond Sanctuary as the 30 or so participants gathered at 7 a.m. on March 18. The Columbia County pond was full of waterfowl, with over 400 Tundra Swans present, along with scads of Canada Geese and a respectable number of Cackling and a few Greater White-fronted Geese mixed in. A fair number of ducks also were present, including Mallards, Greenwinged Teal, American Wigeon, Canvasback, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked and a Hooded Merganser. An American Kestrel hovered over the prairie, and a couple of Sandhill Cranes called not far away. As usual, sanctuary manager Mark Martin handed out maps and other information about the Goose Pond area on behalf of Madison Audubon and gave us an update on the birds that had been spotted there recently. A little before 8 the group took off in a caravan, and headed over to Harvey Rd. We parked and hiked back to scope the birds on Schoeneberg Marsh, and as we approached we saw a trio of Snow Geese fly over. Lots of Greater White-fronted Geese were present, although most were too far away for great looks. A variety of ducks also was seen. After that we drove a short distance south on Harvey Rd., and stopped at a large pond on the east side of the road. At least 20 Northern Pintails were present, along with lots of Green-winged Teal and Mallards. A few miles farther south we checked a wet area near Wangsness Rd., and had nice looks at Greater White-fronted and Cackling Geese. A few more Northern Pintail and Green-winged Teal also were present, along with Northern Shoveler, and a Cooper s Hawk made a quick pass through the area. A few Horned Larks were singing out in the fields. Next we visited the ponds on Hwy. DM near Hwy. I, where more Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler and Lesser Scaup were viewed, then continued on to the Hwy. V ponds. Many more birds were present here, including over 100 Greater White-fronted Geese and a few Tundra Swans as well as American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Gadwall and others. After a gas-station rest break the group headed north to Arlington, where we walked the streets looking for Eurasian Collared- Young Birders ONLY Field Trip May 27 (Saturday) White River Marsh A joint outing of WSO and the Wisconsin Young Birders Club (WYBC) REGISTRATION: This field trip is ONLY for birders under 19 years of age and their chaperones, and you must pre-register by contacting Ryan Treves at ryantreves@gmail.com LOCATION: White River Marsh State Wildlife Area in Green Lake County. Possibilities include rails, bitterns, cuckoos, Acadian Flycatcher, Cerulean Warbler and Henslow s Sparrow, among many others. Meeting time will be at 7 a.m. Bring along a lunch. Additional details upon registration. Photos by Tom Schultz Greater Whitefronted Geese were abundant on Schoeneberg Marsh, but most were too far away for great looks even with scopes. Better views were had several miles farther south at Harvey and Wangsness Rds. Doves. We eventually spotted a couple, along with Tufted Titmouse, House Finch, Northern Cardinal, Common Grackle, Downy Woodpecker and others. Continuing north we parked along the causeway on Hwy. V on Lake Wisconsin to view the bay. Many ducks were present, including at least 200 Gadwall, as well as pintail, shoveler, wigeon, Black Duck and Green-winged Teal, plus Canvasback, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, all three mergansers and a lone Ruddy Duck. Two Mute Swans were present as well as Sandhill Cranes, Ringbilled Gulls and American Coots; a Bald Eagle soared overhead. Our final stop was a Rowan Park, just west of Poynette. Walking the trails we found Cedar Waxwing, American Robin, Northern Cardinal, Dark-eyed Junco and Red-breasted Nuthatch. We finished the field trip right around noon, with the temperature at 38 degrees. The Badger Birder 9 April 2017

10 Horicon festival offers Mom and Me birding trip on Mother's Day The Horicon Marsh Bird Club invites birders of all skill levels as well as anyone who enjoys the great outdoors to the 20th annual Horicon Marsh Bird Festival May This weekend-long event provides family-friendly activities and educational experiences designed to showcase Horicon Marsh s role as an important habitat for birds and wildlife. Highlights of this year s festival include a keynote speech from birder and humorist Al Batt, as well as The Big Sit, a daylong marathon to identify as many species of birds as possible from a fixed location; Mom and Me, Birding Together, a beginner s guide to birding (and a great way to spend some time with mom on Mother s Day); and a number of field trips by bus, boat and bicycle. Horicon Marsh is both a State Wildlife Area and a National Wildlife Refuge. Originally established as habitat for migrating and nesting ducks, it has since become a stopover for Canada Geese. It has been designated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention and a Global Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. Over the years, a total of 304 species of birds have been sighted on this marsh. Climate change theme planned for Chequamegon festival May Registration is now open for the 2017 Chequamegon Bay Birding & Nature Festival to be held in Ashland, May Festival headquarters will be the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, just west of Ashland. Biologist Ryan Brady, one of the local organizers, says: The birds are great (Tropical Kingbird last year!), the destinations spectacular and the people knowledgeable and friendly. With 110+ trips and programs on all things nature, there s always something for everyone, from wildflowers, frogs and fish to spiders, mushrooms, land snails and more! This year s theme is climate change, including a keynote presentation by Madison Audubon Executive Director Matt Reetz on projected impacts to Wisconsin birds. We ll again gather for a fun and delicious banquet dinner, and a portion of your registration fee will again go to the Bayfield Regional Conservancy and Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, Brady said. But act now, because after just a few hours of open registration quite a few trips have already filled, and most will eventually! Festival details and registration can be found at birdandnaturefest.com/ Bucket list trip to the Galapagos Islands Mickey O Connor, master bird bander and avian zookeeper at the Milwaukee County Zoo, is leading a 14-day adventure exploring the Galapagos Islands. She notes: We will visit numerous islands via our own private yacht for 16 people, and of course the Charles Bird Digest Darwin Research Station. Flightless cormorants, Great Frigatebirds, Galapagos Penguins and, of course, Blue-footed and Nazca Boobies are just a few of the very cool birds we will see. For itinerary and details of the trip contact O Connor at sharpbill@aol.com or DNR names Kent Van Horn bird/habitat conservation chief Kent Van Horn has been named as the new bird and habitat conservation section chief in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Management Bureau. The appointment fills a vacancy left by Bill Vander Zouwen in 2014 when Pheasants Forever named him as its regional representative for Michigan. Van Horn has 30 years experience in wildlife and natural resource management. Most recently he was the Wisconsin DNR s migratory game bird ecologist for 12 years and last June was named the Southern Fox Area wildlife supervisor. He also served as interim Wildlife Management Bureau director between the resignation/retirement of Kent Van Horn Tom Hauge and the appointment of Eric Lobner on Feb. 23. Van Horn, who earned a B.S. degree in wildlife management/biology at UW-Stevens Point and an M.S. degree in fisheries and wildlife at the University of Missouri-Columbia, said he was excited to accept the new job, adding: The programs within this section are integral to wildlife management from turkey and duck hunting regulations, habitat funding and management, wildlife survey coordination and policies/funding for managing our wildlife areas. With the alignment direction before us, we have much to do in developing processes and direction to implement habitat management priorities and public land management coordination. Schlitz Audubon Nature Center plans raptor photo-shoot The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Bayside will again host a special event to allow photographers to get up close and personal with its 16 resident birds of prey. The Raptors in Focus Photo- Shoot is an opportunity to view and photograph hawks, owls, eagles, a Turkey Vulture and a crow. The birds are held by trained handlers who share information about each species. Photographers can submit images for the annual Schlitz Audubon Raptor Calendar. Proceeds from the calendar benefit the Raptor Program. Last year, winning submissions also were displayed in the center s art gallery. This year s event takes place on Saturday, May 13. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CONVENTION Celebrating Citizen Science Breeding Birds of the Nicolet THE BIRDING REGION & CONVENTION FOCUS: Celebrating Citizen Science will be the theme for this year s convention in Carter, WI. In Ornithology, perhaps more than in any other scientific discipline, citizens make incredible contributions to our field. We simply would not have the wealth of information about birds if it were not for the efforts of non-professional birders around the world. This year, we will be celebrating the ornithological accomplishments in the state of Wisconsin. We will discuss past, present and future efforts with a special emphasis on the Nicolet National Forest Bird Survey. We will also examine the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II and look for ways to get more people involved. *** WSO Convention Registration Materials - Page 1 *** The Badger Birder `11 April 2017

19 2016 WSO Totals Rich variety of rarities boosts totals for state birders By Bob Domagalski The year 2016 was an exciting year for rare finds. Among the better: -- A Swallow-tailed Kite in July and August in Door County that was seen by many. -- The first state confirmed breeding record for the Mississippi Kite in Rock County. -- A Purple Gallinule in October in Juneau County that was seen by many. -- Reports of an IVORY GULL in Bayfield and Douglas counties. -- A White-winged Tern on May in Manitowoc County that was both seen by many and missed by many. -- Continued records of the Lewis s Woodpecker in Trempealeau County until late January. -- A Say s Phoebe in Dane County that was seen by many -- Identification of a Tropical Kingbird down to species in May in Bayfield County by Nick Anich and Ryan Brady. -- The first valid state record for the Painted Redstart, photographed by Mary Backus and her brother Richard Schultz in Marathon County in November. -- Confirmed nesting of Blue Grosbeaks in Sauk County. -- A Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch in Clark County in January. -- And three new state records for the Eurasian Tree Sparrow Wisconsin Year Totals Daryl Tessen Mary Backus Michael Gray Thomas Wood Ryan Sallmann Jay Watson Myles Hurlburt Dan Belter Mary Maertz Tom Prestby Stuart Malcolm Marty Evanson Peter Fissel Steve Thiessen Quentin Yoerger Mike Wanger Aaron Holschbach Jack Swelstad With such a rich variety of rarities, the Wisconsin Life Totals for many birders made nice increases. For the top birder, Daryl Tessen, his state life total increased from 414 to 418. And, as happens every year, Tessen led the state in the number of species found in 2016 with 338. Other 300 birders were Mary Backus (318), Michael Gray (313), Thomas Wood (312) and Ryan Sallmann (305). Backus had a major big year with 318 species, including the Painted Redstart. Due to her efforts, Mary s state life total went from 326 to 349 and her Marathon County total went from 247 to 271. Also of note was Brady becoming the first birder in Bayfield County to reach 300 species with 301, John Romano (on a brief visit to Wisconsin from his current home in Louisiana) becoming the sixth birder in Dane County to reach 300 species, Jym Mooney becoming the ninth birder in Milwaukee County to reach 300 (with 302), Adam Sinkula having the highest total of species in Kewaunee County with 255, and Bob Matyas having the highest total of species in Washburn County with 201. Ross Mueller, bicycling out of Appleton, set a new Big Green Big Year.(BIGBY) high with 243 species. Another 200 green birder was Steve Thiessen of Dane County with Karen Johnson Shawn Miller Nolan Pope John Dixon Kay Kavanagh Jim Frank Patrick Ready Ross Mueller Sarah Sabatke Aaron Stutz Jenifer Wenzel Marilyn Bontly Jym Mooney Joel Trick Dan Jackson Tim Hahn James L. In 1979 she co-founded the E-Z Recycling Center in Sauk County, one of the first in the nation. Working with communities, lawmakers, and the plastics industry, she helped invent the Recycling Triangle, a system now used globally to identify different plastics. She also contributed to the 1990 Wisconsin Recycling Law, EPA s recycling policies, and helped set up recycling programs nationally and internationally. Hugh Iltis ( ) A distinguished scientist, teacher, environmentalist and passionate advocate for conservation, Iltis served as professor of botany at UW- Madison and director of the UW Herbarium. In the 1960s, he co-founded the Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin, joined fellow citizen activists to ban DDT, and promoted all aspects of environmental quality. He is recognized internationally for his efforts to protect biosphere reserves in Mexico and South America and the discovery of rare plant species. Christine Thomas (1951- ) Dean of the College of Natural Resources at UWSP since 2005, Thomas has advanced natural resource policy, management and education throughout her career. She has served on the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board for 11 years; and in leadership and advisory positions with national conservation organizations and governmental agencies. In 1991 she founded the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program, now offered nationally, to promote the involvement of women in outdoor activities and conservation efforts. Reflecting on this year s ceremony, WCHF President Joe Passineau said: This year is unique. The induction ceremony is on Earth Day. What a great way to celebrate the many advances since the First Earth Day was started in 1970 by Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D- Wis.), one of our first inductees. The Badger Birder 26 April 2017

27 The Badger Birder is offering a monthly focus on birding groups in Wisconsin. In March, we looked at the two-year old Green Lake Birding and Nature Club. In the fifth part of this series, Tim Hahn, Waukesha County coordinator for the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II, answers some questions about the past and present of what is probably the state s oldest such group, the Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club in Waukesha County: What is the purpose of your club? The Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club was founded to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds through education, research, preservation and conservation, and to provide public awareness of birds and their role in the environment. That remains our goal and purpose to this day. Tell us about its history. The Goss Bird Club was founded in 1928 with five members. That was a full 11 years before the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology got organized in The club gradually grew into a formal organization during the 1930s and members have met for monthly meetings, bird counts and field trips every year since. Goss, a pioneer settler who arrived in the area that is now Pewaukee in 1842, was a renowned naturalist and ornithologist with a worldwide reputation among scientific circles. His collection of North American bird eggs brought him fame, and his extensive collection, previously owned by the bird club, is now housed at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Being one of, if not the oldest bird club in the state, our historical roster includes many names recognizable to Wisconsin birders, including S. Paul Jones, Thomas Soulen, Alex Kailing, Charles Sontag and Bob Adams, many of whom served WSO for a number of years in various capacities and received awards for their service. We can also boast that Christine Reel, a current club officer, served as the society s treasurer from 2002 to 2013 and continues to serve in that capacity for various projects including the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II. Has the club hosted any WSO events? The club has brought WSO s annual convention to Waukesha in 1958, 1961, 1976 and Birding clubs in Wisconsin: #5 Goss Bird Club has a storied past and a very active present Why would you encourage someone to join the club? It s always fun to go birding, but socializing with fellow birders only increases the enjoyment! Birding together, sharing stories, learning from others, and general birding fellowship are all great reasons to join the club. What events, field trips or other opportunities exist for birders to attend? We hold monthly meetings fall through spring, with a featured presenter giving a talk on a topic relevant to birds or birding. We conduct various bird counts throughout the year, including the Waukesha Christmas Bird Count and a May Count in the same circle. The Big Sit! is conducted each October, with our circle located on the hill at Retzer Nature Center. We also assist Retzer with its spring Friday morning bird walks, a woodcock walk, its spring bird count, and a Bio Blitz conducted by the Milwaukee Public Museum. Our field trip list is extensive with an event of some sort taking place every weekend in the spring and early summer, visiting great natural places. Our schedule this year includes Paradise Valley, the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Monches Woods and Vernon Marsh. We soon will be launching fall and winter trips, including an owl prowl! Anything scheduled soon? On April 23, Daryl Christensen will talk The Goss Bird Club stages a Big Sit! each October (above), with a circle at the Retzer Nature Center. It also runs field trips of some sort every weekend in the spring and early summer. about the recovery of the Kirtland s Warbler in Wisconsin. If folks are interested in attending meetings or joining the club how do they learn more? All meetings, field trips and bird counts are open to the public. We don t want to turn anyone away! An event calendar and contact information can be found at We have a Facebook group to share bird sightings and chat about bird happenings. Search for the Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club and join our group to receive updates on events and sightings! The Badger Birder 27 April 2017
