Boracay Palms Necklace Designed by Naz Garces Compiled by XQ Designs Please do not distribute, lend or copy. Do not mass produce. Copyrights 2011 XQ Designs Descriptions: The Name Boracay (Palms) is taken from the most popular beach resort in the Philippines. With strands in color green, the word Palms was added because it s somehow similar to the palm leaves. This tribal looking necklace is created using macramé techniques such as mounting knots, overhand knots, double overhand knots and right half knots. Not only you will have a beautiful necklace but with this tutorial you ll also learn these mentioned macramé techniques. Jewelry Designer Naz Garces added seed beads and glass beads that added texture on the necklace s strands that s perfect wearing at beach parties. In creating this necklace, you need to trust your instinct on how much volume you want the necklace to have. You will find tips and notes at the end of the tutorial on how to help you create the necklace. This tutorial is jointly designed and compiled by Naz Garces and XQDesigns, suited for intermediate to advance level. Page 1
Materials required Tools Needed 50 pcs 8mm glass beads 4mm 1 pack each black and green seed beads 2 strands 150 cm (59 inches) size 9 black crochet thread 1 pc 70 cm (28 inches) size 14 green Beeswax cord thread 20 pcs 36 cm (14 inches) size 14 green Beeswax cord thread 9 pcs 33 cm (13 inches) size 14 green Beeswax cord thread 30 cm (12 inches), 25 cm 10 inches), 20 cm (8 inches) size 14 Beeswax cord thread 1 pc Toggle clasp 3 pcs jump rings 15 cm (6 inches) non-tarnish free wire 2 foldover crimps glue Round nose pliers Flat nose pliers Wire cutter Scissors Page 2
Step 1: Pre cut 70 cm (27.5 inches) of Green beeswax thread. Fold it in two and tie a simple knot (overhand knot) at the tip. This will become your main thread. Then cut 20 strands of 36 cm (14 inches) Green beeswax thread and 9 strands for 33cm (13 inches). Pre-cut another 6 strands of threads as follows: 30cm (12 inches), 25 cm (10 inches) and 20 cm (8 inches). Step 2: Lay your main thread, 70 cm (27.5 inches) Green beeswax thread) and do a mounting knot by tying one 36 cm (14 inches) thread unto it. To do a mounting knot, fold the 36 cm (14 inches) thread into two and then lay it under the main thread. Bring the tails up and into the loop. Pull it out gently but not too tight. Page 3
When finished knotting this is how a mounting knot should look like. Step 3: Knot all the threads unto the main thread using mounting knots. The longest thread, 36 cm (14 inches) should be positioned at the middle working your way up to the shortest thread towards the end of the necklace, tying 3 threads on each side for each group of threads. You should have 3 threads on the left and right for 30 cm (12 inches), 25 cm (10 inches) and 20 cm (8 inches) of threads. While for the 33 cm (13 inches), you can tie 4 on the left and 5 on the right or vice-versa. Note: Remember to knot the threads always having the knots on one side. Choose your front or back side of the threads. The side shown in this picture is the back side of the necklace. Page 4
Step 4: For stringing the beads, please refer to Appendix 1 Pattern of Stringing Beads for Boracay Palms Necklace We suggest you read the tips first before stringing in the beads and tying the knots. Step 5: After you have strung all the beads in. Pick up your black thread and do an overhand knot. Page 5
Step 6: Right Half Knot Hemp Knotting Proceed knotting by doing a right half knot. To do a right half knot, crossover your black threads on your main threads (green) with the left black thread positioned over the right black thread, making your former left black thread your right thread and your former right black thread your left thread.. Step 7: Then start making right half knots. To make a right half knot, pass your right black thread under the main thread and into the left loop. Page 6
Step 8: Tighten by pulling both left and right black threads. Repeat Steps 7 to 8 until you reach near the tip of the main thread. In this picture it shows how it should look like after creating 8 right half knots. Note: The tension (strength of pulling) you are applying should be the same all throughout the knots. Page 7
Step 9: Do the same for the other main thread. In this creating this piece, we have done 80 right half knots with 10 sets of 8 knots for each twirl. Step 10: Glue the last knot of the black thread and cut excess thread. The glue will secure the thread and will keep the thread from slipping off the knot. Page 8
Step 11: Cut excess thread of the main thread but leave a few centimetres for your foldover crimps. Do the same for the other side. Step 12: Insert the end of your main thread into the foldover crimp and secure by pressing the crimp just like in the picture. Page 9
Step 13: Cut 15 cm (6 inches) non-tarnish wire. Step 14: Slide 9 green glass beads and 8 black seed beads alternately with each other. The length should be 10 cm (4 inches) once the beads are strung and looped on each ends. Page 10
Step 15: Secure the beads by creating double loops then wrap twice at the base using round nose pliers and flat nose pliers. Cut and flatten excess wire using your flat nose pliers. Do the same for the opposite side then set it aside. Step 16: Open a jump ring and connect the foldover crimp on one loop of the wired beads. Page 11
Step 17: Pick up the other loop of the wired beads and attach the T bar section of the toggle clasp using a jump ring. Step 18: Attach the other section of the toggle clasp using a jump ring. Page 12
Step 19: Now, we re going to work on the fringes. For threads with no beads do a double overhand knot at the tip of the thread like shown in this picture. Step 20: Pull the thread and you should have two knots. Page 13
Step 21: Cut all excess threads and make sure that the necklace forms a U shape. You have completed the Boracay Palms Necklace. Remember, there are many variations you can play around with it. Explore and discover you will be able to do it! Hope you like it! If you have any query or feedback for the tutorial, please contact me at diyjewelryclub@gmail.com. 18 91. 1gb*2sbg*1sbg 92. 1sbg*1gb+1sgb 93. BT 94. 1sbg*2sbg*1sbg NOTE: On how to know when to put the knots. Just make sure that the glass beads do not align horizontally with the next thread (left and right thread) because we wanted to make the glass beads look like they are evenly scattered and not concentrated on some parts of the necklace. Tips To avoid frays on your threads, you can apply a bit of clear nail polish at the tip of each thread. This will keep the tip intact. If you think your necklace is not balanced and it looked it has more volume on one side, you can always insert few more threads and slide a number of beads that you need, but make sure you add an equal number of blank threads on the other side, too to maintain the balance of the necklace. To secure the mounted knots at the main thread, you may glue them one by one. Make sure that you have checked the balance of the necklace first before you glue them because you will not be able to move the knots from its place and insert a new one once it is glued. Page 18
