3 Visit of the ITA (Institut für Textiltechnik) and the IKA (Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge) of RWTH Aachen University On the first day of the conference, time has been allocated for delegates to tour part of RWTH Aachen University. The shuttle busses will depart from the Hotel Pullman Aachen Quellenhof at hrs. Institut für Textiltechnik der RWTH Aachen Univ. Prof. Dr. Ing. Dipl. Wirt. Ing. Thomas Gries Otto Blumenthal Str. 1 D Aachen T. +49 (0) F. +49 (0) aachen.de ita@ita.rwth aachen.de The Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University (ITA) is one of the largest institutes of the faculty for mechanical engineering of RWTH Aachen University in terms of number of employees, patents and turnover. The core competencies of the institute are the development of textile machines and components, new materials, new methods for the production of textiles, new textile structures and new textile products (e.g. fibre reinforced composites, medical textiles). At ITA employees from different research groups are engaged in the development of medical and technical products comprising of nonwovens. Furthermore they develop new nonwoven technologies and methods for analyzing and characterizing nonwoven properties. For developing medical and technical nonwovens the ITA is equipped with machinery covering the whole supply chain of nonwoven production. ITA exhibits highly flexible laboratory and industrial equipment as well as selfdeveloped machines. The machinery consists of machines for the opening and mixing of fibres, the mechanical and aerodynamic web formation, the mechanical and thermal bonding and also machines for the finishing of nonwovens. Since one of ITAs current projects deals with the production of nano fibre based nonwovens, also a melt electrospinning process is available. In close collaboration with industry and within the framework of R&D projects these machines are used to produce nonwoven prototypes consisting of both natural and synthetic fibres. The development of new nonwoven technologies and processes deals with topics such as flexibility, reduction of vibration, quality assured production of technical and medical nonwovens and the modification of conventional production lines for processing recycled fibres consisting of e.g. high performance fibres. For analysis of established processes the research group is equipped with measuring devices existing at ITA (e.g. High Speed Video Technique, Particle Image Velocimetry). Furthermore tools for process enhancement and quality assurance, e.g. neuronal networks, FMEA or process simulation are used yielding the intended results. For analyzing mechanical properties of nonwovens the complete equipment of ITA textile testing laboratories is available. Besides the usual textile testing methods ITA has developed testing equipment to measure e.g. homogeneity, the pore size, the fibre orientation of nonwovens. For industry partners, ITA offers research and development projects or frame contracts; research in the context of publicly funded projects (state, federal, EU); advanced training and workshops which are concerned with textile subjects inhouse or at ITA; creative workshops to find new concepts and ideas as well as patent and literature surveys. Our research services are offered and handled in cooperation with 3T TextilTechnologieTransfer GmbH, a company that belongs to us. We offer courses in: mechanical engineering (specialized in textile engineering), industrial engineering (specialized in textile engineering) and educate teachers in technical education for professional schools. Beyond that the opportunity to graduate (PhD, Dr. Ing.) exists. You can find further information at aachen.de. 16 & 17 November 2010 > Aachen Germany
