5 GENOA P.6578 At the time of Marco Polo s travels, there were more Genovese traders in Asia than merchants from his native Venice. The rivalry between the two cities is also responsible for making Marco Polo famous, for had he not been confined in Genoa as a prisoner of war, he might never have taken time to dictate his adventures for posterity. 8 VENEZIA P.6579 After nearly 25 years spent traveling the world, Marco Polo returned to Venice and settled down to have a family of his own. The death of his great Mongol patron Kublai Khan made returning to Asia difficult at best. But the East had forever changed Marco Polo. Now wealthy and famous in his own right, he never ceased to spin tales of its wonders. Our Venezia design brings an Asian sense of order to a small scale pattern that evokes the feel of fine Venetian tile work, or even Roman mosaics.

11 CONSTANTINOPLE P.6580 On the day Marco Polo was born, his merchant father was in Constantinople, unaware of his existence. The city s economic instability sent the elder Polo into Mongol territory in search of safer and more profitable pastures, launching a familiarity with Mongolian language and customs that would serve the Polo family for a full generation to come. Our artfully aged Constantinople design holds a sense of centuries passing signs of fading rendered entirely for effect in Milliken s technically advanced Convergence construction, rated for severe wear.

14 KASHGAR P.6584 Because of its access to mountain passes to Central Asia, India and Persia, the high desert oasis of Kashgar had been key to Silk Road trade for 1,300 years before Marco Polo even left Venice. Through waves of invasion and conquest, Islamic Kashgar has remained a rich cultural crossroads. Our Kashgar design honors the traditional rug designs of Central Asia. Its naturalistic grace makes a striking counterpoint with the collection s more geometric designs.

17 LHASA P.6585 Mongol conquest left the cities of Tibet in ruins, yet Tibetan lama Phagspa wielded such influence over Kublai Khan s court, where Marco Polo served, the Great Khan asked him to design a written alphabet for the Mongol empire. It is this square script which appears on the paper money of the day. Our Lhasa design echoes the precise geometry of Phagspa s alphabet, while the textured carpet construction provides added depth.

20 LOTUS FLOWER P.6586 Buddhism was foreign to Marco Polo s experience and he learned a great deal about the faith in Kublai Khan s court the Great Khan s principal wife Chabi was a dedicated Buddhist. But it was the young man s trips into India that broadened his world view and earned his respect for the practice. Our Lotus Flower pattern draws inspiration from centuries of Buddhist art to create exotic and beautiful floor effects, especially when used as an accent amidst other designs in the collection.

23 SUMATRA P.6582 Marco Polo spent five months in Sumatra, delaying his homeward-bound journey and his mission to deliver the Mongol princess Koekecin to her groom until the rains let up. His opinion of the tropics improved after he sampled wine the locals made from the roots of trees, which he claimed cured dropsy and tisick and spleen. Our Sumatra design seems to have come directly from that lushly timbered island. See it with its smaller-scaled companion pattern, Ceylon, on the following page.
