The company is aptly named Montre Exacte, which is French for the highly precise watch. As early as his childhood days, Umscheid was fascinated by the fact that the different hands of the clock seemingly lead individual lives while inescapably pursuing a pre-set choreography. This master watchmaker learned his craft the traditional way at the vocational training college for clock and watch makers at Karlstein. Like Poysdorf, it is in the north of Austria, but slightly further west, where granite boulders are hard, water is soft and they have been manufacturing clocks for several centuries. Following stints in watch retail and wholesale, Umscheid ran a little shop restoring watches through the 1990s. It was there in 1999 that he was discovered by a Swiss maker of upscale watches, for whom he worked for from 2001 to The quarter watch is a high-precision chronometer from. While typical watchmakers usually do not develop a great affinity for information technology, early in his career Umscheid started to work intensely with computeraided design (CAD). He took a step toward three-dimensional (3D) modeling in the 1990s by acquiring a Solid Edge software education license from Siemens PLM Software. Umscheid s decision to acquire a Solid Edge CAD system has proven to have a profound effect on his career. By using a CAD system, I was able to analyze problems not only through the magnifying glass, but on the computer model as well, says Umscheid. I quickly developed a habit of modeling and inspecting parts in the CAD system prior to production. With Solid Edge, we don t need to build any prototypes. We can verify functionality more exactly than with the real object, and we can implement modifications to individual components or the entire assembly much faster.
3 The complete clockwork is made of about 200 components and provides precise function exactly 48 hours or 86,400 seconds from winding. achieves the desired level of precision by verifying the interplay between all individual parts. Using synchronous technology, Solid Edge supports all necessary modifications. By attaining such precision, he won a contest for the restoration of valuable watches and colleagues gave him the nickname l exacte (the precise), which is used in the company name. Providing distinct features I have always been annoyed by the enormous lack of precision with which watches all the way up to the most expensive chronometers are traditionally devised, says Umscheid. The practice of approaching the desired result experimentally basically by trial and error has been appalling to me since I was 17. This is why in 2012, Umscheid laid the foundation for his own manufacturing company. No more than one year later, he presented his first series of models. These models represent the neighborhood that they are made in, the wine quarter. It is called that because it is a wine-growing region covering about one quarter of the federal province of Lower Austria. One quarter (of a liter) is also the size of the typical glass in which vintners and innkeepers serve the local wine. The brown clock face with embossed ridges resembles typical barn doors and the strap is made of gradl, the material used to make vintner aprons. The packaging is carved out of used wooden wine barrels. The distinctive feature of the wine quarter watch is the quarter jumper shaped like a champagne glass that is visible through the glass bottom. Removing restrictions In the haute horologerie (expensive watchmaking) of today, hand sketches are no longer the dominant means of designing, says Umscheid. The problem with specific software for watch design is it puts numerous restrictions on watchmakers, particularly stipulating practically all of the processes with predefined functions. This frequently results in the integration of identical errors by multiple manufacturers. This kind of software also does not usually offer easy ways to extract data required in generating presentation material or even for machine programming. As a watchmaker rich in experience at the workbench but with no formal CAD training, Umscheid first had to get acquainted with the unfamiliar methodology still history-based at the time of the CAD tool as well as with its nearly unlimited degrees of freedom. He found that it emancipated him from the restrictions of the industry solution, and enabled him to generate high-quality drawings for part production. In 2008, even before any users in mechanical engineering adopted it, Umscheid was the first customer in Austria who risked full conversion to synchronous technology, says Wolfgang Hackl, who has a CAD and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) consulting company, and is a Siemens PLM Software channel partner. The unique synchronous technology for feature-based and history-independent modeling allows Umscheid to make changes to existing parts or assemblies with virtually no preparation. With Solid Edge providing a valid definition of dependencies, all affected parts are automatically modified accordingly due to the functions for direct modeling supported by live rules, which ensures the coherence of the entire time piece. A solution manager graphically visualizes all details of any changes during modification work. Synchronous technology enabled us to align the methods that we use when working on the computer model as well as the piece itself, says Umscheid. Eliminating prototypes Beyond the simple design, using Solid Edge offers the watch manufacturer far-reaching functionality for converting product ideas to high-quality, practical luxury goods. The opportunity to create all required tools by 3D modeling using the engineering data of the work pieces accelerates manufacturing of specific tools due to reduced data entry and helps prevent inaccuracy in dimension transfer. Programming of the special-purpose machines for the production of all turned, milled or spark-eroded components for watches also uses the 3D models of commercially available tools as well as the component modeling data of Solid Edge. With consistent data, the Austrian watchmaker ensures coherence of all manufacturing processes and seamless integration of all modifications. Through seven iterations, Umscheid, who is clearly a perfectionist, examines not only the flawless function of the whole clockwork, but also the interaction of parts to achieve the best possible result: a watch that does not require restoration or maintenance and retains its unparalleled precision over the lifespan of its wearer.
