LIMITATIONS / EXCEPTIONS " Framework of large leaded glass windows must be subdivided with mullions to create smaller sections. " Individual sections should not exceed 1.11 sq m (12 square feet) without the addition of horizontal muntins (T-bars) to transfer the weight of the upper glass panels to the frame. " Stained glass windows must be fabricated with extruded lead alloy came that has sufficient tensile strength to retain glass and transfer loads.
Sept 17, 2003 Page 5 " Stained glass windows must be properly sealed between the glass and came with cementing compound or glazing putty. " Stained glass windows require additional steel or brass structural reinforcing members, anchored to the window frame, on average every 450 mm (18 inches) to hold glass in a flat plane. " If exterior protective coverings (sull sash) are installed, they must be adequately vented to allow moisture to evaporate, vent any heat build-up from solor gain; inset or outset applications. " Do not use Low-E coatings on the inner surfaces of the protective coverings. Low E glass is not recommended for use with stained glass window assemblies due to heat build up within the interpane air space. " Abnormal wind and suction loads at building corners or leeward locations, that may apply at the project location.! SAFETY PRECAUTIONS " Structural Reinforcing: Window reinforcement must be professionally designed to withstand all imposed loads, including weight of glass and wind/suction loads, in relation to the size of the wall opening.! " Miscellaneous Glass: # Laminated : To meet hurricane and earthquake codes.! ON-SITE STAINED GLASS REPAIR AND RESTORATION " Stained glass repairs and restoration can range from preventative maintenance measures to complete restoration of monumental glass. " Preservation, Conservation, Restoration, Repair, Stop-gap. The following definitions are from the Association of America Standards & Guidelines for the Preservation of Historic : 1. Preservation: An act of keeping safe from injury, harm or destruction. 2. Conservation: A careful preservation and protection of something especially a planned management or a natural resource or cultural property to prevent exploitation, destruction or neglect. 3. Restoration: A bringing back to a former or unimpaired condition. 4. Repair: To mend by replacing a part of putting together what is broken. 5. Stop-Gap: Something that serves as a temporary expedient. " Maintenance (conservation) and repair can extend the life of the stained glass installation until the time when it requires full restoration.! SHOP FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY " Window Assembly Lead Came Assembly:
Sept 17, 2003 Page 8 # Each glass component is selected, cut, shaped and painted according to the approved rendering design specifications. # Finished pieces of glass are arranged on a working drawing according to full-size pattern lines. # Steel or aluminum T-bar and/or muntins are designed to divide individual panels greater than 1.11 sq m (12 square feet). # Pieces are leaded together with lead alloy cames. # The lead came matrix is soldered together at each joint. # Cement or putty is pushed into the space between the flanges of the lead came and the glass on both sides of the window, to stiffen and strengthen leaded panels, and render them weathertight. # Excess material is cleaned off with calcium carbonate whiting. " Window Assembly - Faceted Glass (Dalle de Verre): # Thick slabs of glass are cut or broken into desired shapes, then selectively faceted on the interior edges. # Finished pieces of glass are arranged on a casting table according to pattern lines. # Epoxy resin is poured between the pieces to form the structural matrix. # The resin is back bedded and covered with a layer of colored granules. Black is recommended to form a visually cohesive unit. " Window Frames: # Large window frames are designed with horizontal and/or vertical mullions to decrease overall panel size, depending on design. # Supplemental steel reinforcing is installed to support weight of window and to keep it in a flat plane. Placement is based on design and structural requirements.! SHOP REPAIRS AND RESTORATION " When shop repairs or restoration are needed, the windows are removed. " When restoring stained glass windows, any observed or latent structural defects should be remedied, such as dividing over sized panels or with additional structural support. If original window frames are badly deteriorated they should be replaced. " Create a floor plan showing window and panel orientation to easily locate placement in building. " Label (and code for later recognition) all stained glass windows, panels and frames. " Glass windows are removed and taken to a restoration facility.
Sept 17, 2003 Page 9 " Create a comprehensive electronic photographic record is created starting with overall photos and detail photos before the window is removed. " Create rubbings to provide the full-size pattern for re-construction, one for disassembly, one for assembly and one for archival records. " The glass panels are disassembled, inspected for damage, and cleaned. " Glass Repairs: # Damaged paint on painted glass areas is repaired utilizing an appropriate method such as a urethane fixative or enamel touchup or both. On historically important stained glass windows such as Tiffany s, a plate of thin float glass with the missing areas of unstable glass paint applied can be plated over the original painted stained glass. # Minor glass cracks and broken pieces are repaired with edge gluing, copper foiling, came or plating. Missing or poor past repaired pieces of glass are replaced with best available matching glass. # Plated glass is reassembled and sealed around the edges with silicone sealant or foil to prevent further moisture and dust infiltration. " Re-leading: # The glass pieces are re-assembled with new lead came, matching the full-size rubbing made prior to disassembly. # The came is re-cemented on both sides of the window to provide waterproofing and added strength to the panel. " Structural Support: # New or existing reinforcing bars are soldered or connected with tie wires to the new lead came assembly. PRODUCT PLACEMENT! PREPARATION " Surrounding work by others should be complete before glass is brought on-site. " For installation into an existing frame, inspect frame and ensure defects have been rectified. " Prepare opening to receive new window frame. " Perform installation in suitable weather conditions.
Sept 17, 2003 Page 10! INSTALLATION " Install window frame in prepared opening. " Install stained glass window sections, each panel independently supported by T-bars attached to vertical mullions. " Install supplemental reinforcing members. Attach support bars to lead cames and attach to window frame or sash. " Install protective covering or exterior glazing at exterior of stained glass window; ensure proper venting to avoid condensation and excessive heat buildup.! IN-PLACE REPAIRS (move this section to onsite restoration) " Clean glass with ph neutral cleaning solution and distilled water. Painted areas should always be tested for stability prior to cleaning. " Repair minor glass cracks and breakage. Damaged areas may need to be re-leaded. " Replace loose or missing perimeter putty in the sash and steel T-bar system. " Repair, re-paint and re-caulk window frames. Stone frame openings might require missing pieces to be re-attached using epoxy consolidation or other methods. " Re-attach loosened reinforcing steel to lead came matrix. " Install new protective covering (sull sash) to exterior of window to protect from further weather damage.! MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS AND PROCEDURES " Periodically dust interior surfaces with soft brush. " Wash using soft cotton cloth and ph neutral soap solution mixed with distilled water. Test painted glass in small area for stability prior to cleaning. If unstable, do not clean. " Periodically repair loose glaziers putty or construction sealant, around perimeter of panels at frame.
