Weaving, Repetition, & Pattern Fine Arts vs Folk Art and Craft
Folk Art vs Fine Art Fine art is taught in an academy, formally. There s a canon, and a critical vocabulary to discuss it in. One is trained, by people who are specialists, in the field. One becomes certified. One has a credential. His bona fides are vouched for.
Folk Art vs Fine Art A folk artist might be self-taught, or learn from other folk artists. There s a tradition, but it s not codified. Some people know more than others but there are no experts, exactly. Your work is authentic or it isn t. Authenticity is prized, and you often may be so authentic there s nobody like you. You re yourself. One folk artist calls himself Sui Generis.
Folk Art vs Fine Art Determine which are Folk and Fine Art.
Craft A pastime or profession that requires some kind of skilled work. During the Middle Ages and earlier, the term applied to people occupied in small-scale production of goods. Is a part of artistic practices that fall within decorative art. It is defined by the relationship to functional or practical products such as wood, clay, ceramics, glass, textile, metal.
Craft vs Fine Art Paul Klein (Art Juror) spoke about artists finding their personal art settlement and employing a vision and strategy for success. He distinguished vision from strategy in that an artist s vision is nonnegotiable. Strategy includes such things as: size, color, price, dealer, other artists, etc He says to find a strategy that works, and that every artist can find success on their own terms. He discussed three things which need to be inherent in a body of work in order for an artist to achieve success: Composition which he feels relates to both craft and fine art. Context (as conversation) how you contribute to the dialogue (could also refer to both craft and fine art). Content which he defined as an expression (vs. a trend), and a vulnerability which comes from seeking inside oneself, a vulnerability which translates to the viewer. Paul feels that fine art happens when you can see the passion of the artist, and that craft is an artistic expression and is concerned with the use of materials. He said this distinction might be determined as the soul of the materials (craft) vs. the soul of the artist (fine art).
Introduction to weaving Weaving - Weaving is an ancient textile art and craft that involves placing two threads or yarn made of fiber onto a warp and weft of a loom and turning them into cloth.
Vocabulary Warp - The first step of weaving that is stretched on the loom as the longitudinal string. It must be very strong. Weft The weft, woof, or filling crosses the warp, binding the warp threads at either side to form the selvage.
Vocabulary Shuttle - The shuttle is the instrument used in weaving for passing or shooting the thread of the weft from one side to the other between the warp threads. Heddle - A heddle is an integral part of a loom. Each thread in the warp passes through a heddle which is used to separate the warp threads for the passage of the weft.

Repetition & Pattern Define Repetition: An element that occurs over and over again in a composition. You can repeat the element in a consistent pattern. Define Pattern: pattern is the repetition of an element (or elements) in a work
