1 The next meeting is March 14, 2013 March 2013 Newsletter Our Guild meets the second Thursday of each month all year round at 6:30 P.M. at the Woodcraft located at the Overland Park Shopping Center at 7005 West Overland Road, Boise ID (208) Greetings, fellow wood slayers! By now we have concluded our annual Idaho Artistry in Wood Show, and are contemplating our next challenge, knowing that in 300+ more days, the 2014 Idaho Artistry in Wood Show will sneak up on us as it always does every year. Let s hope that in those 300+ days, we can truly show what this club is capable of and produce the most unique, innovative, educational, interesting, awe-inspiring and creative carvings to demonstrate what the Idaho Woodcarvers Guild is all about. Gene graciously gave of his time to teach us how to layout, and carve, various facial expressions on these pieces. He showed several interesting expressions he had carved ( Eww!, smiles, grimaces, amused looks, etc.) and than turned us loose, all the while regaling us with stories and anecdotes, as well as the occasional anatomy and history lesson. With Gene, it s never only about the carving, it s about learning everything we can, and boy, did we ever! A great time was had by everyone! I sincerely hope you can make it to the meeting this week, as we have several interesting and thought provoking topics to cover. We will talk about some challenges we will be facing, monetary topics, educational opportunities, future directions, etc. Please come and weigh in with your ideas, concerns and comments. It is also the month in which we begin talking about the financial audit, upcoming elections (in only 2 months) and the yearly calendar. I hope to see you there. For an interesting travel down some great carving informational lanes, check out for great articles, pictures and patterns for woodcarving. Pete LeClair has loaded some great patterns for caricature faces and characters and Ol Don Burgdorf always has a drawing pattern for use in your carving journey. Also, check out the amazing carvings by Jordan Straker at His carvings of leather and lace, as well as guns and holsters look so real they were removed by Ebay for violating their weapons policy until he proved to them it was all done with wood. Just amazing carvings from an amazing carver. His Native American stuff is truly outstanding! As Porky Pig used to say, That s all, folks! 2 February Meeting Minutes for The Idaho Woodcarver s Guild "Thursday, Feb 14th, a meeting of carvers SO dedicated, we spent Valentines Day together! Eric Owens called the meeting to order at 6:32. Jane gave a treasury report. First order of business was the Idaho Artisty in Wood Show, zooming up fast. Carolyn Greener asked for show volunteers, and carving entries. Eric dispersed handbill and show posters, in hopes of plastering the town with advertising. Gene Fuller talked about his upcoming class, March 2nd at Woodcraft. He will encourage us to carve expressions. Eric remembered he had copies of the show prospectus and entry forms. Beck asked how many pieces can each person bring to the show for the display table. (Answer: as many as we have room for.) Doug Rose secured for the show, involvement with the Boise Sesquicentennial, and so the show would be giving an informational presentation. Each club will give a brief history and some interesting tidbits, Saturday Feb 23 at 3:00, at the show. Eic reminded us the Carving Jamboree is coming up, Memorial Day Weekend. Tentative teachers are: Ryan Olson, Dennis Thornton and Doug Rose/Larry Christ. Norm Sullivan reported he received a donation of books and materials, for the club. Which brought Eric around to the club library, which is, at the moment, scattered amongst various members. We need to brainstorm to find a central location and checkout system. Carolyn pointed out a box of free stuff from Kathleen Schuck's estate, for the members to rummage though after the meeting. John Brubaker took a moment to thank Monte Dick, for giving John help with learning to carve. Then there was Show and Tell, and a rousing Raffle! Then there was cookies! Then there was a carving class, the Little Hairy Snow Dude, finally!" 2

3 Challenge "The Rogue Carvers Guild invites the Idaho Woodcarvers Guild to a "Six Section Challenge." To complete this Challenge, participants must enter a minimum of six carving in the IAIW Show in Participants must enter one carving in each of the six sections of the IWG prospectus. 5 Beware the Ides of March The Ides of March, or the date March 15th has interesting historical origins. A soothsayer warned Julius Caesar of his death by calling out of the crowd to him, "Beware the Ides of March!" The warning, to "beware," gave the date an overtone of misfortune, for it did indeed bode the day of Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. 5

7 Show and Tell Gene Fuller brought two very creative bottle Stoppers that are resting in carved boots. The Boots can serve as tooth Pick holders. He donated These carvings to the auction at The Idaho Artistry in Wood Banquet. Eric Owens shared two Little People and a great carving of boots with A spittoon. Stan Magee showed us A bark carving with a house And a tree. Great work! Beck Beus has been busy and shared a Sandpiper and 4 bark carvings. His light house has inspired me to try some lighthouses. 7

8 Lynn from Woodcraft shared a boot he carved and wood burned. Upcoming Events of interest Jun 7-9 Tri-Cities Woodcarvers 16 th Annual Rendezvous, Benton Co. Fairgrounds, Kennewick, Wa. RV sites and restrooms: $10 per night with water & power, $6 per night For RV s and Tents with no hookup. Free (3-4 hour) woodcarving classes; instructors normally charge for supplies and cutouts, bring your own carving tools and wood burners.
