Due to the excellent fit of the last all models are extremely comfortable, sport a slim heel and come with a removable anatomic insole. The FIDELIO insole is made from feather-light natural cork covered with a layer of the best calf leather, but it is not soft! The impression that the footbed is soft comes from the fact that the perfectly formed anatomic footbed correctly disperses the body weight between the toes and the heel, which in turn significantly relieves pressure upon the arch and the ball of the foot. The deep-cupped heel not only guides the foot into the correct position but it also holds the foot securely which results in mules providing the same sense of security as a sling-back sandal. Unfortunately to do this they clasp the sole at the heel and pull the insole out in such a way that the insole gets damaged. In cooperation with our insole producers we have further developed the insole to address the above issue. We have introduced a fine layer of netting that covers not only the bottom of the insole but also the sides. This results in the insole becoming more robust. Nevertheless, due to the material properties of a natural product there are limits. Please show your customers how they should properly remove the insole from the sole: They should grasp the heel of the mule or sandal with one hand and with the other hand they should hold the toe area and bend it gently downwards, the insole will automatically lift out at the heel area. The Properties of FIDELIO Cork Insoles: Anatomically formed Regulates moisture Breaths and insulates Warms the feet pleasantly Extremely compressible and thereby elastic Extremely durable Ecologically sustainable It is only the bark of the trunk and the thicker branches of the cork oak that get peeled by hand. 20% of the bark remains on the tree thus protecting the oak from drying out. The peeling requires an experienced hand and can only be carried out by specialists. The tree is only peeled to the thin reddish mother layer that must not get damaged. Under this layer a new layer of cork is slowly growing. As the cork oak can reach between 200 and 250 years of age, the tree can provide a thoroughly eco-friendly material for many years. The Raw Material: The bark of the cork oak is known as cork. This stately tree has been shaping the face of Portugal s landscape, for thousands of years but is also at home in western Mediterranean countries. Unlike other species, the cork oak is not damaged when the bark is peeled off. Thus, cork is a renewable material and therefore an environmentally friendly raw material. However, a tree must be at least 25 years old before it can be harvested for the first time. Further harvests are only possible with intervals of 9 to 10 years. Processing: After harvesting, the bark is roughly sorted and stored for approximately 6 months to dry out and stabilize. In the factory the sheets of cork are boiled in water and any insects that have crawled into the bark are killed. After boiling, the cork needs to mature in a darkened room with controlled humidity. Cork sheets of good quality are then cut into strips, whose width corresponds to the subsequent length of a bottle cork. The art of the cork-cutter is to carve out as many pieces of perfect bottle corks as possible from one piece of raw cork sheeting. The cork that remains on the sheet after the bottle corks have been cut out is ground into granules of varying size and density. These granules are sorted, boiled again and are made available for the manufacturing of cork insoles. 17
