4 SIKA DESIGN A PROUD TRADITION OF CRAFTMANSHIP Our passion rattan and know-how dates a long way back we have been around long enough to call ourselves Scandinavia s oldest producer of rattan and wicker furniture. The story of our company begins in 1942 when Ankjær Andreasen produced the first batch of baskets, lamps, flower tables and other smaller interior items made of rush and willow. In the 1950s he expanded his production to include a series of furniture made from rattan, and the company Sika-Design was firmly established. The rattan was imported from the Far East and Ankjær travelled there to buy rattan for his wicker makers in Denmark. During a trip in 1972, he was so impressed by the skilled wicker makers that he decided to establish a wicker furniture factory in Malaysia. Since then, the Far East has been essential to our production of furniture, and today we manufacture our furniture in our own factory in Indonesia. Ankjær s son Knud Andreasen took over the company in 1983, however Ankjær still continued his daily inspection rounds in the company until his death in On my 10th birthday, my father allowed me to attend a fair where Sika-Design was exhibiting a series of rattan furniture. On that day, I knew I wanted to be a part of his company, and my passion for rattan furniture was started. Since 1996 my father and I have worked side-byside bringing Sika-Design into the new century with great design, while never letting go of our strong heritage of great craftsmanship. OUR DESIGNERS ARNE JACOBSEN (1902-1971) Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was born on February 11, 1902 in Copenhagen.

6 OUR DESIGNERS ARNE JACOBSEN ( ) Arne Jacobsen ( ) was born on February 11, 1902 in Copenhagen. He had dreams of becoming a painter, but as fate would have it, Jacobsen was admitted to the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in As one of Denmark s most influential 20th century architects and designers, Arne Jacobsen s legacy is his great contribution to architectural functionalism as well as his many simple, but effective chair designs. Still a student in 1925, Jacobsen participated in the Paris Art Deco fair Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes and won a silver medal for his very first furniture design. The chair, for which he won, was made from beautifully sculptured rattan and simply called The Paris chair. Today we are proud to be able to manufacture this spectacular design. 6

NANNA DITZEL (1923-2005) Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005) and Jørgen Ditzel (1921-1961) exhibited their first furniture designs in Copenhagen, when they were still students at the Industrial Arts and Crafts

7 NANNA DITZEL ( ) Nanna Ditzel ( ) and Jørgen Ditzel ( ) exhibited their first furniture designs in Copenhagen, when they were still students at the Industrial Arts and Crafts College, Copenhagen. Nanna Ditzel graduated as a furniture designer in 1946 at Design School Copenhagen, at the age of just 23. Prior to her graduation as furniture designer, she was educated as a cabinetmaker - a background that gave her a basic understanding of the furniture function prior to its design. Nanna Ditzel s critically acclaimed design was functional and experimental at the same time and she managed to become a successful woman in a very male-dominated era of Danish furniture design. One of her and Jørgen s most famous pieces is the iconic design of the egg shaped chair floating in the air from Beautifully crafted from Rattan, this distinctive sculptural shape has enjoyed praise worldwide for more than 50 years. We are proud to be able to produce this icon in the quality it deserves. 7

Viggo Boesen was also a pioneer within organic furniture design. He designed a number of rattan and upholstery furniture, which was constructed according to his philosophy: design with an organic flow that embraces the body smoothly and tenderly and is a delight to the eye as well solid and durable. Viggo Boesen s FOX chair won a competition held by the Danish wicker-maker guild in We can understand why it is truly a unique design, which we are proud to produce today. FRANCO ALBINI ( ) Franco Albini ( ) was an Italian Neo-Rationalist architect and designer, renowned for merging modern minimalistic furniture design with traditional Italian craftsmanship. He had great success in the 1950s where he created a range of distinguished furniture design, here amongst the famous and fashionable rattan chairs Margherita and Gala, both featured as part of the permanent exhibition Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. In 1951, Franco Albini designed an ottoman made of rattan, which has since been chased by connoisseurs all over the world. We are now able to offer this wonderful piece of design as part of our ICONS collection. 8

Wengler was established in Copenhagen in 1854 by the German born craftsman Robert Wengler and continued on for generations as family business. In 1914 R. Wengler was appointed as wicker maker to the Danish Crown. R. Wengler was known as the best wicker maker in Denmark. Architects such as Arne Jacobsen, Viggo Boesen, Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel and Kay Bojesen came to the R.Wengler workshop to learn about wicker and weaving and have their prototypes made. RATTAN - A NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL Rattan is a climbing plant that grows as a vine in the rainforest. The vines have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long.

10 RATTAN - A NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL Rattan is a climbing plant that grows as a vine in the rainforest. The vines have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long. Rattan grows naturally without disturbing the existing structure and balance in the rainforest while at the same time cleaning the air by transforming CO2 into clean air. As rattan grows by climbing the trees in the rainforest, it is important to preserve the trees in order to preserve the rattan production. This means that rattan indirectly helps to preserve the rainforest in Indonesia. It is the fastest growing tropical wood and it regenerates in 5-7 years. RATTAN IS IMPOSSIBLE TO WEAR OUT Rattan can handle both high and low temperatures as well humidity and fluctuations in temperature. Rattan does not need any special attention. For daily cleaning it can be wiped with a cloth or brush. There is a common misconception that rattan furniture is made of bamboo, however there is big difference between rattan and bamboo although they look similar on the surface. Rattan stems are solid whereas bamboo stems are hollow. This means that if the material is bent into shape, it is rattan. Unlike bamboo, rattan furniture is extremely hardwearing and can last for generations. 10

11 ICONS With our collection ICONS we revitalize iconic pieces of furniture from some of Europe s most skilled and important architects and designers. Arne Jacobsen, Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel, Viggo Boesen and Franco Albini were all pioneers of their time they broke new ground when they made experimental shapes of the sturdy materials of rattan and wicker and created sculptural and timeless icons. With great respect and admiration for the original designs and in close collaboration with the descendant of these renowned furniture makers, we are pleased and proud to be able to bring these icons back. ORIGINALS The Originals collection is a collection inspired by our own design sketches as well as other successful models from the 1950 s and 1960 s. The collection is made from rattan with many beautiful wicker details that add to the decorative and sculptural qualities of each piece of furniture. The rattan collection is complemented with a series of teak products made from old houses, fishing boats and railroad supports. The rustic teak items appear with reparations and fillings and the general characteristic that old wood has. AFFAIRE The Affäire collection from 2012 is a combination of the amazing natural resource rattan and the fantastic manmade synthetic fibre ArtFibre. The frames are made of rattan and the woven seats and backs, and the bindings are all made of ArtFibre. The designs in this collection are our own, and some of them date back to the 50s and the 60s. Affäire is designed for cafés, brasseries, restaurants and waterfronts, however the collection is also a charming choice for the private garden or terrace. Our handcrafted Affäire café chairs, stools and tables bring you back to the atmosphere of Paris life in the 30s. 11

26 THE BEAUTY OF ARTFIBRE Although we have a strong heritage for natural rattan furniture, and we truly do love making furniture in this material, ArtFibre, steel and aluminium also have some amazing qualities, especially for outdoor use. Our exterior collections feature a range of furniture suitable for extensive wear and tear and challenging weather conditions. Many hotels, restaurants and cruise liners around the world welcome their guests with furniture from Sika Design. This requires a material that is sturdy and stays beautiful for a long time. HARDWEARING ARTFIBRE Our ArtFibre is a fibre made of dyed and hardwearing polyethylene. The structure of the fibres and the weave provide flexibility and optimum comfort. The ArtFibre can withstand the sun s burning UV-rays, heavy rain and even frost. You can literally leave your furniture made with ArtFibre outdoors all year round. All exterior furniture from Sika-Design is woven on aluminium or on a hot-dipped galvanized and powder coated steel frame. 26

GEORGIA GARDEN The Georgia Garden Collection is inspired by the colonial style from the old British colonies. We have created the design based on drawings found in old books and postcards.

27 EXTERIOR In 2015 we introduce our newest collection Exterior based on a new exciting material that offers new possibilities and expressions for our existing models. The new material alu-rattan consists of a strong aluminium frame woven with ArtFibre. The material is maintenance free and can withstand all weather conditions. This means that original rattan models previously only suitable for indoor use now can be used in the garden and on the terrace and the balcony. The first of our original models in this collection are the Fox chair and the Albini Ottoman. GEORGIA GARDEN The Georgia Garden Collection is inspired by the colonial style from the old British colonies. We have created the design based on drawings found in old books and postcards. Georgia Garden is cosy and romantic and the entire collection fit perfectly with a garden as backdrop. The collection made from ArtFibre is available in vintage white, classic antique and our new colour chestnut. The new chestnut colour has been developed with my grandmother s old willow chair in mind. All three colours blend well with the trees and the flowers in the garden as well as with our teak items. AVANTGARDE Avantgarde is a collection of furniture designed for the exterior living. The collection is hand-woven of the maintenance-free and UV-resistant ArtFibre, which is mounted on a stable hot-dipped galvanized steel frame. This makes for a piece of furniture that can endure all kinds of weather. The design is simple and minimalistic with focus on seat comfort and functionality. The result is solid elegance with an exclusive touch. Although the collection is primarily for outdoor use, it is also sold for indoor use, as the Scandinavian minimalist design fits many homes perfectly. 27
