Holiday Cards Craftsman Farms Craftsman Farms is the former country estate of noted turn-of-the-century designer Gustav Stickley, a major proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in decorative arts, home building and furnishing styles. Stickley combined the roles of designer and manufacturer, architect, publisher, philosopher, and social critic. In he began acquiring acres of property on what is now the western edge of Parsippany-Troy Hills, an area formerly part of Morris Plains where he envisioned establishing a farm school for boys. Stickley originally designed the main house at Craftsman Farms as a "club house", a gathering place for workers, students and guests. In its huge kitchen, meals could be prepared for people. The living and dining rooms, reaching fully 50 feet and warmed by copper-hooded fireplaces, made ideal meeting rooms. The porch opened to a vista of the farm and brought in light and air. The house is T-shaped, with a one-story kitchen attached to the rear. The large gabled roof has long shed dormers at the front and back, which allow for light and ventilation in the bedrooms. The Log House is now widely considered to be one of the most significant landmarks of the American Arts and Crafts movement A separate home for the Stickley family was originally planned to be built further up the hill. First, there is the bare beauty of the logs themselves with their long lines and firm curves. Then there is the open charm felt of the structural features which are not hidden under plaster and ornament, but are clearly revealed, a charm felt in Japanese architecture The quiet rhythmic monotone of the wall of logs fills one with the rustic peace of a secluded nook in the woods. Stickley commuted to his New York showroom by train from Morris Plains. Stickley and his family lived at Craftsman Farms until, when he filed for bankruptcy after several years of financial difficulties. By then the taste of the American people that 15 years earlier had embraced the clean, strong lines of Craftsman furniture changed once again, this time towards the revival of early American and other styles. But Gustav Stickley made a lasting impression on American decorative arts. It is difficult to realize what a revolutionary step his designs were without keeping in mind the crowded, highly embellished interiors of the Victorian age that had preceded him. His functional approach to design and his unornamented, clean-lined furniture introduced Americans to the modern decorative arts to come. In, Major George and Sylvia Wurlitzer Farny purchased the property in the bankruptcy sale and their descendants lived on or owned the property until In the intervening years they also sold some of the property, but maintained the core area. When the property was threatened with development for 52 town houses, the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills, with the encouragement of community groups and others interested in the importance of the site, obtained the property through eminent domain. Today, Craftsman Farms consists of 30 acres located in and owned by and located in the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills and it has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms formerly the Craftsman Farms Foundation, a c 3 organization, was formed in to protect and preserve the property. The 30 park-like acres include meadows, wooded areas, walking trails, a pond and stream, and several support buildings including a massive stone stable, three cottages, a calf barn, and the ruins of a dairy barn. The Log House has been largely restored to its appearance and is open to the public for tours. Work on the historic landscape has begun as well. We invite you to join us Page 1

Photo  Jackie Craven In, Gustave Stickley wrote in The Craftsman magazine that the first building at Craftsman Farms would be "a low, roomy house built of logs.". Search Craftsman Farms is the former home of noted turn-of-the-century designer Gustav Stickley, founder of The Craftsman, a periodical that expounded the philosophy of the "Arts and Crafts" style of home building and furnishing. Built in, the log house is one of the most significant landmarks of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Today the Stickley Museum makes its home at Craftsman Farms, now a National Historic Landmark occupying 30 acres of the original acre tract. Stickley, a well-known spokesman for the Arts and Crafts movement, combined the roles of furniture designer and manufacturer, architect, publisher, philosopher and social critic. Proponent of "a fine plainness" in art and the art of living, he is best known today for his straightforward furniture, sometimes called "mission" or "Craftsman furniture. The property also contains numerous support buildings including craft workshops, stables, a dairy barn, chicken coop, other farm buildings, and three cottage dwellings. Gustav Stickley and his family lived at Craftsman Farms until, when he filed for bankruptcy after several years of financial difficulties. By then the taste of the American people that 15 years earlier had embraced the clean, strong lines of Craftsman furniture changed once again, this time towards the revival of early American and other styles. When the property was threatened with development for 52 town houses, the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills, with the encouragement of community groups and others interested in the importance of the site, obtained the property through eminent domain. The Craftsman Farms Foundation has completed the third phase of restoration of the Main House to its appearance. Work on the historic landscape has begun as well. Educational activities are held here throughout the year. The grounds are open year-round from dawn till dusk. The Museum is open Thursday thru Sunday, 12-4pm. Last tour begins at 3: Groups of 8 or more may schedule a tour throughout the year on weekdays or weekends. Admission to grounds, FREE. Call to confirm hours and admission. Page 2
3 Chapter 3 : Craftsman Farms - Wikipedia Craftsman Farms was founded in in Parsippany-Troy Hills, Morris County, New Jersey, United States, by noted early 20th century designer Gustav Stickley as a farm and school for the Arts and Crafts movement. Displaying this page does not burden Wikipedia hardware resources. This article is from Wikipedia. Wilson, Richard Guy, and Sidney Robinson. The Prairie School in Iowa. Iowa State University Press, Used in sealants, mineral felts and damp-proof courses. English Bond, Flemish Bond. Strong historical origins include steep roof pitch es, turret s, dormers, tower s, bays, eyebrow window s and porch es with turned posts and decorative railings. Ornament ation and decoration are used along with shingles or narrow-lap wood siding. These homes are mostly two-story in design. Small, circular "beads" of molding - decorative. Horizontal structure that forms the principal, loading-bearing part of said structure; usually timber, steel, wood, or concrete. It has a metallic lustre and a greasy feel. Compressed with fine clay, it is used in lead pencils though contemporary lead pencils contain no lead, lubricants, paints, and coatings, among other products. Wave - Sinuous moulding. Weathering - Sloping surface to throw off rainwater. Capitorium Casement window - window hung vertically, hinged one side, so that it swings inward or outward. Capital The topmost member of a column or pilaster. Half timbering is a construction or decoration method in which vertical, horizontal and diagonal timbers make up the frame of the wall. This is another of the many Revival Style houses of the early 20th century. Eastlake houses had architectural ornamentation that had copied the furniture inside the house. Page 3
4 Chapter 4 : Historical Markers in New Jersey - The Historical Marker Database This acre National Historic Landmark is the centerpiece of Gustav Stickley's early 20th century country estate, known as Craftsman Farms. During the s, Stickley divided his efforts between his new enterprise and, with his brother Leopold, served as a foreman of furniture operations at the Auburn State Prison. In he orchestrated the removal of his business partner and formed the Gustave Stickley Company he dropped the use of the "e" in Warner soon his first staff designer to create his first Arts and Crafts works in an experimental line called the New Furniture. In he changed the name of his firm to the United Crafts, issued a new catalogue written by Syracuse University professor Irene Sargent, and began to offer middle class consumers a host of progressive furniture designs in ammonia-fumed quartersawn white oak, as well as other mostly native woods. In October, Stickley published the first issue of The Craftsman magazine, an important vehicle for promoting Arts and Crafts philosophy as well as the products of his factory within the context of articles, reviews, and advertisements for a range of products of interest to the homemaker. Unadorned, plain surfaces were enlivened by the careful application of colorants so as not to obscure the grain of the wood and mortise and tenon joinery was exposed to emphasize the structural qualities of the works. Dyed leather, canvas, terry cloth and other upholstery materials complemented the designs. Ultimately, over retailers across the United States represented the Craftsman Workshops. Within a year the inlay designs would be all but dropped from production save special orders, but the broader emphasis on less massive forms would remain. In keeping with this new emphasis, Stickley also began offering furniture in willow to complement the heavier oak designs. Furthering the development of his concept of the Craftsman home, in late he announced the formation of the Craftsman Home Builders Club to provide architectural plans from The Craftsman to its subscribers. Natural materials and soft colors predominated and interiors were invariably prescribed to include simplified moldings, stained wood, and characteristic features such as built-in cabinets and fireplaces with inglenooks for seating. Although these homes were only rarely innovative in terms of progressive style, designs reflected current approaches to open floor plans, economy of function, and use of novel materials for walls, roofs, and surface treatments. Stickley moved his headquarters to New York City in and by began to acquire property to establish a boarding school for boys in Morris Plains, New Jersey what is now Parsippany, New Jersey. Craftsman Farms was designed to include vegetable gardens, orchards, dairy cows and chickens. As he wrote in The Craftsman: There are elements of intrinsic beauty in the simplification of a house built on the log cabin idea. First, there is the bare beauty of the logs themselves with their long lines and firm curves. Then there is the open charm felt of the structural features which are not hidden under plaster and ornament, but are clearly revealed, a charm felt in Japanese architecture. The quiet rhythmic monotone of the wall of logs fills one with the rustic peace of a secluded nook in the woods. The planned school never became a reality. By, changing tastes and the financial strain of his new twelve-story Craftsman Building in Manhattan, conceived as a department store, began to take their toll; in he filed for bankruptcy, stopping publication of The Craftsman in December and selling Craftsman Farms in Gustav Stickley died on April 21, Legacy[ edit ] In recent decades, Stickley and his work have become popularly recognized once again. It is particularly his early furniture, produced between and that is considered rare and extremely collectible. The exhibition then opened at the Dallas Museum of Art on February 18, and remained on view until May 8, before opening at the San Diego Museum of Art on June 18,, subsequently closing on September 11, Although no longer held by the Stickley family, the successor firm to the L. Stickley Company continues to operate in Manlius, New York, producing furniture in a variety of styles, including reproductions of Arts and Crafts designs. The Stickley-Audi Company operates a museum featuring the work of the Stickley brothers near its factory site.
