2 Research Objective & Methodology Research Objective: Understand if users would search for certain subcategories under the current categories on Udemy s website Methodology: Hybrid online card sorting test using Optimal Sort (providing four categories as well as allowing participants to create new categories) 10 participants between the ages of 18 and 61 To limit the size of the study to 30 cards this study only included the following categories: Development IT & Software Design Lifestyle Udemy Online Card Sorting by Sarah Markus, Feb. 2017
3 Key Findings, Recommendations & Notes Key Findings: The categories Development and IT & Software are interchangeable for participants Participants would place Fashion under Lifestyle instead of Design Participants have a hard time placing Hardware, E-commerce and User Experience in a specific category Recommendations: Research deep dive into Development and IT & Software: Consider renaming the categories for more clarity or reorganizing subcategories in different groupings by performing an open card sort among participants who expressed interest in Development or IT, as they are the actual target group for these categories Add User Experience to open card sort for Development and IT & Software Follow up with a tree test or usability test to confirm new category names Rename Fashion to Fashion Design Project Notes: I conducted this study to try out Optimal Sort and would not recommend this tool for future card sorting studies as it s not mobile optimized I used a free version of the tool, which only allows for 10 completes This is a preliminary study and meant to inspire further research deep dives Udemy Online Card Sorting by Sarah Markus, Feb. 2017
