2 SEMINAR REPORT A seminar on Intellectual Property Rights & Patents was held on 13 th April 2016 in the KUCTE College Auditorium, Kayamkulam. It was jointly organised by Patent Information Center (PIC)-Kerala state Council for Science Technology and Environment(KSCSTE) and Kerala University College of Teacher Education,Kayamkulam. 2

3 In the inaugural session, Smt. T Hemalatha,Programme co-ordinator delivered the welcome speech.the College Principal Dr.Sunith Kumar presidedover the function.in the presidential address he gave a brief introduction about the seminar. 3

4 Intellectual property refers to the protection of creation of mind which has both a moral and a commercial value. Intellectual Property Rights are the rights given to the persons over the creation of their mind: usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creations for a certain period of time. The effective and enforceable system for protection of IPR promotes the innovation in science by promoting strong incentives to authors and innovators to create intellectual assets The seminar aimed to create first level IPR awareness among the teachers, student teachers and young intellectuals about the beneficial aspects of patenting their creative and novel ideas, inventions etc... Such awareness would in turn be highly essential for the promotion of creativity, research and technical advancements as well as application into market 4

5 The formal session of the programme started at 10 am and was inaugurated by Prof. Jacob Mathew K. (Former member syndicate, University of Kerala).In his talk, he shared views on IPR and also explained the importance of creating IPRawareness among the teacher students.the College Development Council Vice president Sri.Salahudheen wished all success to our venture. Dr.Smitha J.M,Asst.Prof.andKum.Aiswarya A.R, Vice-Chairperson extended their felicitations. Staff secretary smt: Chithra I, expressed gratitudeto all on behalf of our institution. 5

6 REVIEW OF THEMATIC SESSIONS The technical session I started at am and it was on the topic Overview of Intellectual Property Rights and was handled by Dr.BismyGopalakrishnan, Hon: Director, Dr.Ambedkar chair, CenterFor Human Rights and Social Justice and Assistant professor, Department of Law, University Of Kerala. She explained about nature of IPR major IPR, IP Law of India copy right, patent etc. The class was very interesting and created firsthand knowledge about IPR to students. The students were also provided with a booklet which included details of the topics explained by the ResourcePersons andhighlighting the achievements of KSCSTE. 6

7 Technical session II started at pm and was presented by Sri.Arun Alfred, Project Scientist, PIC-Kerala, KSCSTE on the topic Patent Searching and Support from PIC- Kerala for IP protection.he explained how to search patent, how to apply for a patent and also gave information on many websitesboth national and international related to patents and also about the cost of applying for a patent.the second session was followed by a delicious lunch. 7

8 The final session (session III) of the seminar started at 2 pm and was handled by Adv. FebinJames,Trade mark Attorney and Partenor,Legalise IP Services, Thrissur.He talked on the topic Patent filing procedures in India and Case studies. He explained about Trade mark,industrial designs,geographical Indicators protection of plant varieties and farmers rights.he also shared many of his life experiencesand about those who came to him with their creations to be right protected. 8
