2 CONCEPT NOTE:- Intellectual property is the property created by the intellect of human mind which encompasses the protection offered by the legal regime of various types like Patent, Copyright, Trademark, Designs. Intellectual property as a right is granted for a specific duration. Human intellect and organizational capabilities play a crucial role in business performance and economic growth. An increasing share of the market value of firms appears to derive from their intellectual assets, and firms are managing these assets more actively to identify additional ways of extracting value from them. Valuation of an Intellectual Property, specifically in patent is a significant issue for facilitating their exploitation. While for patent holder, it is important from the point of view of pricing it for licence purpose, for calculating royalties, securing effective returns during the grant period, it is equally a matter of concern of many other stakeholders such as Bank, Financial Analysts, Investors of Stocks and Shares, Venture Capitalist and many others. The different methods of valuation by different entities and experts from different perspective pose a problem to many. Therefore a balance method is needed to evolve a method of valuation considering various aspects and factors. IP Securitization is the pooling of revenue - generating assets, and issuing securities backed by them. The owner of the assets receives payment based on the discounted present value of the transferred assets, and the investors obtain a return on their investment derived from the assets' revenue stream. 1) issuance of publicly-offered corporate bonds (typical securitization); 2) issuance of privately-offered corporate bonds; 3) privately-offered bonds that are practically IP-backed loans (e.g., privately-offered bonds underwritten by a single institutional investor); and non - recourse loans collateralized by IP. There is a need to review new uses of Intellectual Property, specifically patent including as a means of attracting external financing via bank loans, securitization of patents and patent donation. Then it is required to discuss IP management and exploitation practices across industries. So, the objective of the conference is to address the significance and difficulties or inconsistencies in IP valuation and importance of IP securitization and potential risk of IP securitization.

3 Ladies and Gentlemen, The will hold the conference on IP Valuation & Securitization under the sponsorship of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi on 18th September, 2010 at the NLSIU Training Centre. The objective of the conference is to address the significance and difficulties or inconsistencies in IP valuation and importance of IP securitization and potential risk of IP securitization. Over the last 21 years, the National Law School has pioneered reform in Indian legal education, demonstrating that legal education can be realm of excellence and promoting legal research. In pursuance of this objective and to contribute to the increasing importance of IP Valuation and Securitization, the IPR Chair at the NLSIU has taken this initiative to discuss the various aspects of the IP Valuation and Securitization. This conference will be an opportunity to the interested Indian Industries and the stakeholders to exchange ideas and develop a common vision for the future of IP Valuation and Securitization in India.
