5 CSIR-CENTRAL GLASS AND CERAMIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE, KOLKATA FIRST DRAFT OF PRESS RELEASE Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurates the India International Science Festival 2018 from the CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata Hon ble Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr Harsh Vardhan visited the CSIR- Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata on the afternoon of 14th September, 2018 to grace the curtain raiser function for the India International Science Festival 2018 (IISF-2018). In the presence of senior functionaries, senior representatives of the Vigyan Bharti and addressing a gathering of close to 300 participants comprising of students, scientists, research scholars and representatives from civil society, the Minister emphasised the role of science and technology in driving inclusive growth and requested the scientific organizations to work in close alignment and partnership with stakeholders. He underscored the role played by CSIR in developing frugal solutions for social challenges and its role in driving development through energization of industrial clusters. The Hon ble Minister reiterated his government s commitment to make science and technology as an enabler of social and economic progress for all sections of the population. The Curtain Raiser was a finale for the day-long programme that was being organised by the CSIR-CGCRI in association with CSIR-IICB and Vigyan Bharti that included among others popular science lectures by eminent personalities, interactive session with students, interactive session with NGOs on cluster development and release of a report, science documentaries and presentation of an overview of ongoing outreach programmes.

6 The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is one of the premier scientific establishments of the country with a chain of 38 laboratories in physical, chemical, biological, engineering and information sciences; ranked first in India and 9th in the world among government funded institutions. With a strength of more than 4000 scientists; intellectual property portfolio of several thousand patents; and an average annual outlay of Rs 4500 crores, it is among the largest public funded R&D organizations in the world. The Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute is among the first series of CSIR laboratories and was established in Over the years, it has emerged as a key technology provider and facilitator for the country s atomic energy, defence and space sector. Core areas of specialisation has been on specialty glasses for radiation shielding, night vision, biomedical applications; advanced ceramics that include non-oxide ceramics, electroceramics and bio-ceramics; sensors and actuators; multi-purpose coatings and composites; technologies for water purification; refractories, traditional ceramics and functional materials. The institute is also a single-point CSIR window for cluster development programmes for small medium enterprises in the state of West Bengal; and has a robust testing and characterisation facility for various classes of materials. Tailored courses are also provided in advanced glass and ceramics at masters and doctoral level; as well as skill development initiatives for the weaker sections of society. Outreach centres of the institute at Khurja in UP and Naroda in Gujarat has also been instrumental in facilitating local economic growth of these regions.
