2 THE QUANTUM MATTER INSTITUTE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE Established in 2010, and located on UBC s Point Grey campus in Vancouver, QMI comprises a critical mass of internationally renowned investigators and builds upon a long-standing quantum materials research cluster at UBC that is recognized as among the best in the world. QMI has had recurring success in attracting external research funding, and priority support from UBC. Research excellence is reflected in exceptionally high impact publication metrics, major national and international awards, and international partnerships with the world s leading universities and research institutes. QMI s research excellence was recognized in 2012 with the establishment of the Max Planck-UBC Centre for Quantum Materials, only the third Max Planck Centre ever established outside Germany, and in 2014 with the establishment of the UBC Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Quantum Materials and Devices Based on Oxide Heterostructures. The Challenge The Science The Commercial Opportunity As a recent recipient of an additional $86M in funding from Canada First Research Excellence Fund, QMI is poised to move to the very forefront of research into quantum materials. In addition to other sources of funding, this influx of funds will allow QMI to compete on an equal footing with the best institutions in the world in quantum materials research, and accelerate the pace of translating scientific discoveries into commercial opportunities. Quantum materials exhibit a wide range of astonishing electronic and magnetic properties that evoke the most profound scientific questions challenging the field of condensed matter physics. Answering these questions will provide the foundation for future technologies. Silicon was the basis for the microelectronics revolution and the rise of Silicon Valley as an economic power. The far richer set of properties emerging in quantum materials has the potential to spark transformational innovation across broad application areas that include advanced manufacturing, microelectronics, medicine, and sustainable energy. 3 THE POSITIONS QMI is seeking 3 top tier individuals who will help to build the foundation for, and support the ongoing achievement of, its ambitious mission to lead global research and technology transfer of quantum materials. Managing Director (MD) The MD will work closely with the Scientific Director, the Research and Innovation Council, and the International Advisory Board to define the overarching vision and strategy that will establish QMI as the best in the world. The MD will also oversee all operational, administrative and financial elements of the Institute, negotiate multi-sectoral partnership agreements, establish and maintain key stakeholder relationships, and provide leadership to staff. The successful candidate will have a university degree, be familiar with the science underlying quantum materials, and have at least 10 years of managerial experience in an entrepreneurial, research-oriented environment. The ability to grasp the vast potential of quantum materials and to build a compelling vision and strategy for taking advantage of this potential is a must - as is the proven ability to build and lead strong teams, and to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders in academic, commercial, and government organizations to realize the vision. Director Business Development (DBD) The DBD will oversee the ongoing development and implementation of a commercialization plan for the Institute which will include a range of possibilities from creation of spin off companies to partnerships with large international firms. The successful candidate will gain a thorough understanding of present research activities and the vision of the QMI team, and proactively search for areas of intersection between QMI s research and industry needs. The DBD will conduct preliminary analyses of the market to identify opportunities and new business partners. Working in collaboration with UBC s Innovation Team, the DBD will drive the most promising opportunities to commercialization and manage all joint ventures. To successfully build the bridge between academic research and commercialization, the DBD will have a scientific background, augmented by an entrepreneurial mindset and a compelling vision for the future of quantum materials. Previous success taking innovative technologies to market, and awareness of the challenges involved is a must, as is experience with patents, and building an IP strategy and portfolio. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential in order to build a broad network of interest in the commercial sector and gain the confidence of top tier researchers, technical, and professional staff.

4 Director, Nanofabrication Facility The Director, Nanofabrication Facility will oversee all activities related to the smooth operation of the nanofabrication facility which will be in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Responsibilities include budgeting; maintenance of equipment; establishment of policies and procedures; coordinating/scheduling use and sharing of laboratories and equipment; and training, support and coaching of staff and users of the facilities. The Director, Nanofabrication Facility will have a degree in engineering or a relevant scientific discipline and will be deeply familiar with the technical workings of vacuum technology and all other equipment found in a clean room environment.
