Event ID: CELL-ALL Workshop Event Started: 1330 SYNKERA Sensors [ audio/video feed is frozen ] Workshop is experiencing a loss of power. Please standby. queue [webcast recovers] Electronic assemblies that I mentioned earlier, we are able to put towards like, a black box [ inaudible ] alarm signal as opposed to just a [ inaudible ]. So we are moving quickly towards that's. We have a another project that is in Phase II and not [ inaudible ] so we are making significant progress [ inaudible ] there. Industry [ inaudible ] we have in regards to the robust this and reliability of our sensors it becomes very critical [ inaudible ] applications and spaces were people's lives are on the line. And our sensors and their instruments, they know that there okay and there is no liability there. Just a quick review of all our facilities, we actually expanded our facilities and are [ inaudible ] eight months ago. We have everything in-house. [ inaudible ] complete characterization of everything that we do [ inaudible ] testing facility. Everything that Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 1 of 14
we send out the door is tested individually and validated and we have a lot of experience with this. We require a large level of [ Indiscernible ] validations so we work hard to keep it -- to keep the facilities up and running. A little bit more detail of the platform that I mentioned earlier. This is what makes a lot of our products possible. You'll see here starting with the nanoscale applications [ inaudible ]. Under an electrochemical liquid [ inaudible ]. Very low cost. We can control a lot of properties and this has a high surface area so it can be very [ inaudible ] of four types of molecules and different thermal properties [ inaudible ] which is actually a slight disadvantage because it requires [ inaudible ] power. On top of this, this is very similar to [ inaudible ] so we can make all sorts of different devices and for sensors we make micro hotplates and [ inaudible ] materials and ceramic micro heaters there is the ability to do temperature modulations and different sensing properties out of the materials. That is how these materials are made. And then we package these. You can see here this would be a typical [ inaudible ] sensor product that we sell now, this is a 5- millimeter by 5-millimeter [ inaudible ] heated up to 1200 degrees Celsius. This is what the foundation of our technology that we are applying to the program is based on. So getting into the specifics of why do we have -- what do we have that works well for the cell-all vision current one is this sensor platform that really enables the mechanisms on our [ inaudible ] platform. This is a very proven sensor technology Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 2 of 14
that has a lot of history that has been out in the field for a very long time for industrial health and safety so for [ Indiscernible ] protection and for oil and gas prices. This has been around for a very long time. Typically with these types of sensors they require a lot of power and traditional sensors it required one of what and our current one requires about 200 milliwatts. [ inaudible ] wireless modules and mobile applications. We think that we can get our power well below 1 milliwatt. Our impression so far is that will make [ Indiscernible ] very peaceful and what is important is that this is a proven technology and a robust States cayennes is low-cost and lots of great features and again on our unique application for it is key. So this provides a little more clarity. This is our commercial platforms, this is an industry standard, it has been around for quite some time in order for us to sell product we had to hassle with that and coincidentally it is easy to prototypes and we are able to make a large amount of sensors like this in house. You can see this is the microheater and what we are doing in Phase I with cell-all, micro heater is a small space and that allows us to get power down to a round 30 to 50 milliwatts compared to 200 to 400. That was without temperature and as I mentioned before, the new temperature modulation [ inaudible ] So in the Phase II and beyond that is part of the separate there for something that makes more sense for global, more integrated applications. Here I am showing a package that we implemented a two sensor array on and this unit is available for demonstration services. Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 3 of 14
When it comes down to the actual packaging, it is a little bit tricky because in order to make something that is low cost at that scale requires a lot of overhead and for us to invest in the overhead requires us to be certain that we are investing the right thing. And what is the right thing? That depends on the application. Each of them have their own different types of requirements in terms of what the center does and how it fits into the module and in terms and how it is fabricated. There are a lot of variables there and it's unclear. Our goal in Phase II is to show that we can fabricate multiple sensors and integrate it into a package and make the investment with the right partner. It will be more relative to the competing powers. Oh, I see. Everything else is add on. [ overlapping speakers ] We have not had reason to optimize it further. There is no reason for us to invest in a new design, we need to focus on packaging and move forward. I can see down the line we might want to Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 4 of 14
optimize the design but there is no reason for us to do that right now. There are a lot of other factors that are important. [ inaudible ] integration to the cell phone doesn't take a lot of power? I am not arguing with Du there, that is absolutely true. This is a key limitation of our technology. There are advantages to it actually. When that is the parent robust technology -- one is that it is a very robust technology, situations where people's lives are on the line. Also with temperature you could essentially take different sensors and if you operate for example, a sensor at 10 milliwatts versus 20 milliwatts you could have some smart algorithms on your whole module. But again power drop is something that we are the very -- are very concerned about. We seem much different behavior, similar but much different behavior. We see faster response time. In our fixed locations there just operating online all the time. A but with the pulsing we're finding out that we have faster start times and faster response times. Weirdest beginning -- we are just beginning to release that. So getting into the details with what we're doing with our Phase II project. We are about halfway through its speed where we are Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 5 of 14
at now on our key efforts right now out is lowered pulsing. That is what this data is showing. CO prototypes. Our goal is to have our CO sensor at this lower power or even lower. And I will discuss the timeline of when we expect that to happen. And then cellphone integration. If you notice in one of my previous slide switches have one sensor on the header and that is a lot of wasted space and our goal is to fit two to four sensors on a single package. We are well on our way there and figure out which sensors as well. And all of the requirements around this application and what we do with packaging and are specific capabilities of. The up and downs for the temperature pulsing? Yeah, that is from the pulsing. This is a a visualization but really you will see it pulls back down to zero but I was attempting to remove that for clarity. In this particular case we had a 52nd cycle. How many percent change? One hundred CO. CO is kind of unique for us going into this project we were not prepared to detect CO B. we are capable of doing it and industrial health and safety there are chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide and our sensors would go through the roof as far as hydrogen Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 6 of 14
sulfide. And I can show you what is next on our list. CO being A key application as it becomes a target for us. So this fits into the technical objectives of our project. I pretty much went over our goals here. We see a big opportunity for its TIC and carbon monoxide, chemical warfare agents are very appropriate for our sensors and explosives as will appear so that is what we want to show that we can detect. On top of that, the second objective is to [ inaudible ] essentially and sophisticated algorithms and then on top of that some sort of pattern recognition not necessarily individual chemicals but chemicals like glass and we got into a discussion. They are partially selective. That can be a blessing and that can be a curse, too it just depends on the application. For us reconsider its depressing especially for a case like cell-all -- we consider it a blessing especially for a case like cell-all and formate bought in various ways in order to make that actual information. It will be useful, of course to identify by class. Is it a leak from an oil or gas plant? Is it a CWA? We have contacted with Texas A&M on that effort. We have extensive sensor capabilities and now we have a huge bottleneck in processing that data quickly and building it into the systems that they had built for us so they're helping us scale those efforts as well and they are actually about halfway through that. The third key task is to define the module requirements. This is for eight cell phone demonstration -- a cell phone demonstration Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 7 of 14
that we have pushed up to the end of the summer and depending on the application, the number of sensor, packaging. One of the things that come into play is whether you need a sample. Whether you need a sample or not depends on the application and what you are detecting. The detection speed that you need so these are all things that are well defined before our phone demo that will be happening pretty soon but it is very much open for other occupations that we are exploring. Getting into the specific work plan, I do not think I need to get into that much. This is another view of our sensor. This is the substrate and this is the node so it's about 500 microns and then 100 microns [ inaudible ]. There's a huge opportunity for us to miniaturized and integrate this and how we do that really depends on the application. What we will be able to do at this point in Phase II is standardized this process and we're able to make hundreds of these guys on a regular basis. This gets into details of what's was behind our efforts to move our sensor [ inaudible ] and rust off to put four sensor components. We have actually finished with this effort and that is what we have done here. There are two sensor elements on either side of this. We validated that the microhotplates work great and the development of this is on hold until we demonstrate CO and CO and address application of. Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 8 of 14
It is one substrates, one, die, and four separate independent sensors on it. It is ceramic. So our second task is to rebound we what we can detect at low power with our sensors some of our key targets are VOCs, also for health and safety there is VOC, CO, and the [ inaudible ]. If we to about two oxygen -- we do not do oxygen sensors and [ Indiscernible ] technology and a list of others. Getting into some more specifics, this is an idea of the sensitivity of our sensors and the power of our current Commercial Center platforms. Like I mentioned before typically around 200 milliwatts is the required operating power. We can detect all of these things that are required. We have demonstrated this with sensors that had been on the field for several years. Often times you get cross interference, whatever you want to call its [ inaudible ] sensor. Since it can measure multiple things, what do they do? What do they do on their end to make sure when they present [ Indiscernible ] is not something else. Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 9 of 14
This gets into the details of the application. A Ford that it really does not matter all that much -- for this ID does that really matter all that much, what matters is that there is a serious problem. But that activity is not [ inaudible ] all that matters is that the alarm goes off the. This gets into more detail of the carbon monoxide testing. So under continuous power had we are around 30-milliwatt protected and this is actually The top brass is 500 the bottom half is 100 so we can use this for lower power, a significantly and still perform protection successfully. This is the type that we're actually going to implement in our unit and a couple weeks. I touched briefly on sensors stability, this is another key feature for applications. We need a robust sensor. I think there was a statement in cell phone's slide equivalent to the [ inaudible ] out for five to seven years. Since we started selling sensors into does increase so we have both of those to go on -- in 2003 so we have both of those to go on. So that is with our traditional sensor that we were talking about. We have shown that it carries over with our in the microsensor platform also -- our microsensor platform also can be had several prototypes. So we had those on the shelf for a while part way through our Phase II we brought this on again. It to show our sensors are very robust but. Again the focus of our testing an devaluation right now is on CO -- and evaluation right now is on CO and we have all of our fabrication facilities in House that are quite expensive and the Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 10 of 14
[ inaudible ] platform and one of those key capabilities atomic clear -- atomic layer position, looking at a whole library of sensing materials and which ones make sense. So ALD [ inaudible ] The reason that ALD is key is because of the nano [ inaudible ] substrate material. We are actually measuring and across the substrate and be have an array of nano cores and an extremely high ratio of substrates. Yes, it gives you surface area. although we to the bottom. We know it does. [ inaudible ] or 40 nanometers we have a very sophisticated capability. I'd think I touched already on our work with Texas A&M. The next phase of their work is developing temperature programs for modulation and Sabinas and achieving greater selectivity -- and arrays and achieving greater selectivity. This is getting down to the specification of the demonstration model appeared again for the demo that we plan in the next coming weeks is already pretty well defined what we're doing Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 11 of 14
now. We have a sensor that detects low power. Sample been will be passive -- sampling will be passive but we have no plans to implement active sampling. And whether active sampling is required depends on what that Chemical is, what your response time and is, things like that. For this particular demo we will not have any kind of sampling. You mentioned earlier that you have a question about the power of electronics. That is your answer right here. So relative to the power. Yeah. So this is actually a mockup of our board here. We have this fabricated out. This is what is of putting a sensor, a VPN signal and we had this fabricated to interpret the change in course sensors and converted back to something that makes sense, a digital serial format. So fabrication is complete and firmware is almost 100% complete and we are evaluating multiple boards and our power head with a power sensor on it and we hope to have that ready to go by September. Miniaturization and cost-reduction are awarded talked about the package that we can implement our substrate. The next step in terms of the miniaturization is cost-reduction and begin our to where applications are. That is what we're talking about with considering applications. So there is a lot of opportunity. There are forehead detectors that could easily get to metritis we are the suppliers of people who get [ inaudible ] we do not want to make enemies of them at the same time to proceed this opportunity to take this [ inaudible ] that we are developing for cell-all and there Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 12 of 14
is a current need and of this market opportunity. So how we transition from [ Indiscernible ] into our OEM partners and getting them to implement a wireless modules on the phone, Internet, it does not matter. That is a bit of a trip to Western that is a key part of our Phase II effort -- trick to us so that is a key part of our Phase II effort. It is to discuss briefly some of our other applications that we have found a lot of potential in. A generic embedded device. We touched on this earlier with Bluetooth had assets in terms of National Health and Safety, personal protective equipment and if you get it small enough and the rate and its power right then really there is a lot of opportunities for these as sensors. Epidemiology. During the last workshop we had [ Indiscernible ] at UC-Berkeley and he works in epidemiology. We think there is a great opportunity there for monitoring pollutants, CO, traffic plans and we have a project going with him and he has one of our sensors implemented within a joint -- an Android phone and we will develop application so that is something that is coming right of of this effort. For DoD, the discussion on the EOC pipes is relevant as well as generating such regional awareness and actionable Information and implementing our sensors inside unman's ground vehicles and aerial vehicles and that is one area we are trying to pursue. And then, excuse me, what has been discussed a lot already is this idea of wireless modules. Respected of indoor air quality markets, you hear about wireless [ inaudible ]. Why has this not been implemented? The technology was not there. I'd think it's Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010! Page 13 of 14
useful to keep in mind that there is this idea already around to other markets. And to connect to that so there's a lot of opportunity there. That is all I have. This is quite a bit of work on microhotplate [ inaudible ] Yes, I am familiar with that work. A key difference with our microhotplate platform [ inaudible ] for example so we have much greater sensitivity. In addition as far as I understand there is some reliability issues where we do not have that with or ceramic product cash with our ceramic product so we are more reliable. Any other questions? Thanks very much. I think this brings us to a break so why don't we take 15 minutes. [ Workshop is on a 15 minute coffee break and will reconvene at approximately 3:35 p.m. PST ] [ 3:45 PST, Captioner is standing by waiting for event to resume from a break. ] Cell-All Workshop and Commercialization Meeting - 7/29/2010!
