It could be of benefit to inspectors, maintenance personnel, design engineers, stress analysts, and project personnel. Moreover, personnel involved with repairs/alterations of vessels and piping will also benefit. ASME Section VIII, Division 1, Design and Fabrication of Pressure Vessels Based on the rules for pressure vessel design and construction, this course is a comprehensive introduction to the requirements of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1. Together with Mr. Mokhtarian, the participants will build on the basis including background, organization, design, materials, fabrication and testing of pressure vessels. The more commonly used subsections, paragraphs and appendices will be covered. Relevant case studies and open discussion of individual problems or situations will be included. They will return with the state-of-the-art industrial knowledge. To facilitate the course delivery, it is suggested to bring a calculator. A copy of ASME Section VIII, Division 1, will be desireable, but not essensial. DAY 1-5th JULY 2010 DAY 3-7th JULY 2010 An overall introduction to the entire ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code will be provided. Different Divisions of Section VIII will be explained and the requirements of Divisions 1 and 2 will be briefly pointed out and compared. The rest of the course will cover requirements of Division 1, in detail. General requirements and materials requirements of Division 1 will be explained. Joint categories, weld joint types and joint efficiencies will be defined and explained. The rules for designing for internal pressure of cylindrical, conical, and spherical shells will be explained. Various kinds of formed heads will be explained and compared. The basics of buckling, as a mode of failure, will be explained, and external pressure rules will be introduced - Introduction to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code - Design of shell - Scope and jurisdiction of Section VIII > Cylindrical Shell - Division 1 vs. Division 2 codes > Conical Shell - General requirements of Div 1 > Spherical Shell - Material requirements of Div 1 - Introduction to buckling - Joint efficiencies and joint categories - Design for external pressure - Design for internal pressure - Sizing of stiffeners DAY 2-6th JULY 2010 Design rules for flat covers will be explained, and advantages pointed out. Design for external loadings will be explained. In-depth introduction to brittle fracture, as a mode of failure will be provided. The background of the Code material toughness rules and how they are applied will be included. Some of the important specific requirements for high alloy materials will be explained. Some of the important Appendices will be pointed out and a brief introduction to flange design rules will be included. The participants will do a number of example problems, to reinforce the application of design rules. These examples include design for internal and external pressure, design for earthquake overturning, and design of openings. Inspection, Flaw Evaluation, Repair & Alteration of Pressure Equipments This course is an extensive introduction to the requirements of various codes and standards, regarding inspection, repairs and remediation measures of pressure equipments, and in particular pressure vessels. The requirements of the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) and the API-510 (American Petroleum Institution) will be covered in detail. The integrity and remaining life of damaged vessels will be briefly evaluated on with API-579 (Fitness for Service), the Simple Level 1 evaluation procedures. Furthermore, Mr. Mokhtarian will share on the latest pressure vessel post construction activities and documents of API, ASME, and Pressure Vessel Research Council (PVRC). DAY 1-8th JULY 2010 DAY 2-9th JULY 2010 Overall introduction to most widely used codes and standards, related to post-construction issue, will be provided. An understanding of how various documents interact is important. The responsibilities of various parties, in meeting the requirements of these codes and standards will be explained. Registered Professional Engineer, USA 46 years of extensive experience Fellow of ASME since 2001 ASME instructor for all ASME Courses related to Section VIII ASME-API Joint Committee on Fitness-for-Service (API-579) Kamran Mokhtarian, a registered Professional Engineer, has 46 years of experience in the fabrication and inspection of pressure equipments. The early part of his dedicated career was his employment with Chicago Bridge & Iron Company from 1964 through He has worked in a number of supervisory, managerial, and consulting positions, having responsibility on a variety of assignments related to design, analysis, fabrication, construction, and repair of tanks and pressure vessels and other heavy steel structures, such as nuclear structures, wind tunnels, and penstocks. Mr. Mokhtarian has extensive experience with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME BPVC), and many other U.S. and international Codes and Standards related to tanks and pressure vessels. Since 1977, he has been a member of ASME Code Committee, and he has contributed to the ASME BPV Code by participating in several other committees. As vice chairman of Subcommittee VIII, he has been responsible for some of the recent improvements to this Code. He has also chaired the Special Group on Interpretations of Subcommittee VIII and the Pressure Vessel Research Council (PVRC). Furthermore, it is noteworthy that he was in the ASME-API Joint Committee on Fitness-for-Service (API-579) and very familiar with API Standards, particularly with API 510, API 579, API 620, and API 650. Additionally, his experiences, with the use of the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) for performance of repairs and alterations, are remarkable. He has also contributed to the safety of nuclear containment vessels by participating in US Nuclear Regulatory Commission s (NRC) Peer Review. Mr. Mokhtarian relentlessly performs consulting services related to all aspects of pressure vessel and tank construction worldwide. His design and analysis methods are widely used in the industry. He holds MSc Engineering from Northwestern University (1964).
