Modern socio-technical systems involve multiple autonomous organizations with conflicting interests. For instance, a healtcare system involves organizations such as public health services, regulatory bodies, and insurance companies. Organizations in a socio-technical system build their own software, which control certain features and information in the socio-technical system, and interact with other organizations software for coordination and information exchange. In other words, a socio-technical system is decentralized both in terms of control and information, and interaction is the only medium for collaboration. Emergence of mobile technologies and IoT have introduced further challenges to the engineering of socio-technical systems both at the social level (e.g., accountability, privacy) and technical level (e.g., scalability). Conventional software methodologies are inadequate for the development of modern socio-technical systems, since they fall short of addressing decentralization in the presence of multiple autonomous organizations. That is, most conventional methodologies focus on defining a unitary control mechanism for a system with respect to a global state, where interaction between organizations is considered as a by-product (e.g., a client-server architecture where all interactions go through a centralized server). Although, a unitary control mechanism can be deployed in a distributed 1 of 6

2 manner, it does not capture the conceptual decentralization and autonomy at the social level, and therefore relies on add-hoc methods to realize the technical level. Regarding to these limitations of the conventional software development approaches, my current ambition is to create novel methods for the systematic design and development of modern socio-technical systems. To achieve this, I develop software methodologies for socio-technical systems, which take decentralization and autonomy into account, and use interaction as the core abstraction mechanism. My research aims to address challenges of socio-technical system engineering at both social and technical levels. At the social level, I explore computational regulation mechanisms to model correct interaction of autonomous parties considering information governance, trust, compliance, accountability, and privacy. At the technical level, I develop programing models to simplify design and implementation of interactionoriented software assets supporting asynchrony, conformance, modularity, and interoperability. Last but not least, I explore the interplay of the social and technical levels to create a solid foundation for building effective socio-technical systems. My research incorporates approaches from artificial intelligence, distributed systems, and software engineering to address these challenges. Publications Journal Articles 1. 4 Projects Senior Research Associate, Turtles: Protocol-Based Foundations for Distributed Multiagent Systems, PI: Amit K. Chopra supported by EPSRC, 2016 present. This project aims development of information-based specification languages and accompanying tools for engineering decentralized socio-technical system using social protocols. I contribute to this project by designing a programming model to operationalize social protocols, and by implementing the corresponding software framework, which provides the foundations for building effective decentralized socio-technical systems. Research Fellow, Formal Verification on Cloud, PI: Yang Liu supported by Nanyang Technological University, This project aimed formal modeling and verification of various systems in the cloud. I contributed to this project by developing a formal modeling language and corresponding model checking algorithms for verifying correctness of multiagent systems that are regulated by social protocols. Main novelty of my contribution is modeling of uncertainty in agent behaviors using Markov models, which enables verification of new correctness properties of multiagent systems. Collaborator, Ontology-Based Privacy Management for Social Software, PI: Pınar Yolum supported by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, The aim of this project was to realize privacy requirements of social network users using Semantic Web technologies in combination with social protocols and abstract argumentation. I contributed to the writing of the proposal and also to the development of a privacy model using social protocols in the early stages of the project. Principal Investigator, Monitoring and Management of Commitment-Based Agent Communication, supported by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey [10,000 USD], I researched properties of social commitments to model their feasibility in systems with scarce resources. I developed a formal model of social commitments in such systems and designed decision procedures for feasibility checking using constraint satisfaction techniques. Research Assistant, MANGO: MultiAgent Environment for Global Optimization, PI: Pınar Yolum supported by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, This project aimed to build efficient distributed optimization methods using techniques from multiagent systems. My main contribution to this project was the design and implementation of the multiagent optimization framework using Java Message Service. I contributed to this project also in the application phase. Research Assistant, Process-Based Matchmaking of Web Services, PI: Pınar Yolum supported by Boğaziçi University Research Fund, In this project I developed novel service discovery methods that analyze process models of web services using model checking and semantic reasoning techniques to improve precision of the service discovery process. I contributed to this project also in the application phase. Teaching Part-time Lecturer, Okan University, Istanbul, Turkey I offered an introductory programming module in C for three terms (Spring 08, Fall 08, Spring 09), and an advanced object-oriented development module in Java for one term (Fall 08). In both modules, I was responsible from the course syllabus, preperation of the education materials, delivery of the lectures, and student assessment. Teaching Assistant, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey 4 of 6

5 I served as a Teaching Assistant for a postgraduate artificial intelligence (Fall 07, Fall 10) and an undergraduate object-oriented programming (Spring 10) modules, in which I was responsible from lab sessions and student projects. Teaching Assistant, Eastern Mediterranean University, Famagusta, TRNC I served as a Teaching Assistant for an operating systems (Fall 06) module, in which I conducted lab sessions.
